I hope you're wrong. I've crossed swords here with Rich many times, usually in the Political Discussions section, but I still like the guy and hope he will take me up on my offer to buy him a beer/coffee/dinner/whatever the next time he's in the Boston area.

And, whatever else anyone might think of him, he knows his stuff about DL, so I hope he does come back eventually.

I'm wondering if Rich is going to stay away from degreeinfo for an entire year as he has done twice before.

I find it fascinating that people are now weighing in on the question, will he or won’t he [return]?

My take is that he will. Not yet, but eventually. He has too much of an ego not to return (take, for example, his DLT username, “Two Doc Doug”), and he has proven himself many times to be a glutton for punishment. When someone goads him, he can’t resist responding.

The thread cited by Kizmet is fairly funny, and we’ve seen more than one example of people dropping off a board who make major pronouncements about doing so. (Jimmy Clifton comes to mind.) Think about the many who have left, with or without an announcement – Tom Nixon, Tom Head, Dennis Huber, George Gollin, Jimmy, Gus Sainz, Leland Milton Goldblatt. Some bid a fond farewell, some have made a dramatic exit, and some merely fade into the sunset. Some return on rare occasion (I see that we’ve had a few recent posts from Nosborne), and some disappear forever.

I think, however, that there is a more relevant question that will eventually have to be addressed. When our favorite DL guru, John Bear, eventually flies into the other dimension, who will take his place as the inspirational head of state in the field? Rich, with his first doctorate in nontraditional education, would appear to be a likely candidate for guru-hood but he has no publication record in the field. None. Zilch. Although, in his favor, he did join the ranks of DL critics who have been sued, a proud few that had previously included John and me.

Having retired from the field in favor of playing trucker, I would never even consider myself for guru-hood. Jason Baker? Certainly qualified, but within a more limited market (as I was). George Gollin? After what DLT did to George and his family members, I can more than understand him laying low. All the more reason for us to treasure John while we still have him around.

No, my take is that Rich will, eventually, return. And will still be as mediocre as he is today. But occasionally funny, which will make it nice to have him around.

I'm not so sure this time. Such a shame.

Bear is sui generis and, as are we all, of his time. What need for inspiration now that alternative education is so well established?

I can add that this forum is also of its time and times change.

Input from the likes of Dr. Bear and Rich will always be invaluable, despite the changing times.

Of course he is. He can't help doing so.
    So . . . Hi, Rich! :wavey:
