This is not a criticism. I wouldn't dare. I don't think there's much chance of Dr. Douglas not returning. The earliest of his DI goodbyes I could find was Nov. 24th, 2002. Here it is:

"With that, I offer my sincere and humble apologies, and say goodbye." Here: http://www.degreeinfo.com/off-topic-discussions/6766-c-ya.html

The next one I found was 2003: "Perhaps I'll return. Perhaps not. But I seriously doubt it matters, so I don't think I will." Here: http://www.degreeinfo.com/general-distance-learning-discussions/9874-gotta-go.html

Want more? Nah, you probably don't....

As I said, this is not a criticism - it's just for the record. I've said goodbye a couple of times (or more) myself. I'm sure most hope Dr. Douglas will return and I won't. That's OK.

¡Bueno! Por lo menos he engañado a una persona. (Good. At least I've managed to fool one person.)

    Gracias, Abner.

Forum suicides are exactly like real suicides. When it's done correctly, you're gone forever. When you're not gone forever...it was nothing more than a sad and pathetic cry for attention.

    Sad. Pathetic.

I would say that what you just said and did is sad and pathetic. Was that really necessary? In the end, Rich has helped hundreds of people I am sure and his contributions are priceless. Without experts like him, there wouldn't be forums like these.

My point is that if you're so fired up that you have to post that you are leaving. Well, just quit being a baby about it and LEAVE. Or, stay..the choice is theirs (whoever is posting they're leaving).

This last one was not a suicide, but a murder by moderator.

Although I'm sure he'll be back.

I was talking about the posts related to him leaving.

Do or don't...no need to talk about it...just DO...or DON'T.

Nothing related to his current troubles, I'm sure he'll be back and just as welcoming to other people's ideas, thoughts, and beliefs as the rest of are ;)

That's knee-jerk stuff. Not even close! Saying "I'm going, now" isn't shooting yourself. Nor is it cause for remarks like "sad" and "pathetic." That strikes me as snarky and supercilious. I think perhaps a light smirk or even a giggle is permissible if you see a pile of such posts over time - even if they happen to be mine. Nothing more.

Surely your point could have been made without trivializing both murder and suicide? Welcome to an adult conversation.

Stowe the undue condescending tone. I did neither, you're reading too much into this in order to score some smugness points. Adult conversation indeed.

Yeah because up until I showed up it was Socrates level of discourse, what with the meme and picture posting. OK.

Hey, Rich. I have no idea how you got Abner's password, but can you please give him his account back? Thanks.

Now, that's funny. Granted, perhaps a bit tasteless, but nonetheless funny. And as King Kaiser said in My Favorite Year, you don't mess with funny.

But 03310151's (that's a bit long - may I just call you "Zero?") point is quite valid. The well-known folk who have moved on from DI and other fora (and stayed away for the long haul) did so quietly, without tearful farewells, hissy fits, or big pronouncements. Some of the long-term people may remember one, more, or even all of them. For example, whatever happened to Tom Nixon? Tom Head? Dennis Huber? Jimmy Clifton? Leland Milton Goldblatt? George Gollin? They all quietly rode off into the sunset with nary a hooplah. Interesting side observation: Note that all of them used real names rather than anonymous usernames on the forum. (Except Leland, although he used an actual name rather than a nickname or moniker. And Jimmy did give us somewhat of a fond farewell.)

Anyway, can tasteless also be hysterically funny? I'm reminded of one of the best posts I've ever read on one of these boards. It was posted by one "Dickie Billericay" (obviously a pseudonym) on the always-tasteless DLTruth forum shortly after our beloved Uncle Janko died. The post showed a picture of an upside-down car still in the air while over-turning, with the caption, "I'm narcoleptic, it's 5 AM and freezing, think I'll go for a drive. What could go wrong?" Much as I loved Janko, I laughed my ass off for days after than one was posted.

So, can anyone tell me why the word snarky seems to be appearing on this forum with some frequency these days? (Never mind, that's a rhetorical question.)

Please don't say dick. The TOS requires that you say Richard.

I was curious by this point whether the TOS would even be mentioned.

Much. That is absolutely better than the long winded soliloquy's to nowhere you usually ramble out.

I have my first name in my sig line. It's Cory, you call call me that if you're so inclined. Zero works as well.

The numbers are my MOS's from my time in the Marine Corps.

The way this thread has gone, I would be remiss if I didn't mention perhaps one of the best names in professional sports, ever. Sadly, he took his own life a few years ago.
