After Hamas launched 7,000 missiles into Israel and invaded to kill men, women and children and take hostages Netanyahu announced that Israel will shut off fuel, electric power, and water to the Gaza Strip as a war measure.

This is looking horrific, possibly on a scale of the Rwanda genocide. The horror in store for Gazans will end any moral justification for the existence of the Jewish State which might be Hamas' intention.

Hamas is but a glove on the hand of Tehran. Neither Tehran nor Hamas gives a damn for the welfare of Gazans.

I hear you, Nosborne. What do you think WE (North Americans in general - not politicians - and regardless of religion) should do, here? Is there anything, other than writing checks to relief agencies? And what do you think would be a more appropriate reaction by Israel?

I can't even think how this can be resolved to a good end for anyone involved. Can you see a possibility?

There will be strong pressure on Netanyahu to end Gaza as a community. The right wing settler parties will say to kill everyone with the slightest connection to Hamas and expel everyone else. Notice that PA Kleptocrat in Chief Abbas is keeping his head down. Let Israel solve his Hamas problem for him.

Note also that the UN Security Council was unable to agree on a statement. Once again the utter worthlessness of the United Nations and the futility of American support for that institution is on display for those with eyes to see.

And a warning to Hamas...in the past hostages have been useful bargaining chips with Israel. I don't think Israel is going to be interested in anything except the total and complete eradication of Hamas. They will agonize over the abuses Hamas will inflict on the captives, including children, Hamas siezed but there will be no deals. There will be no negotiation with terrorists this time. There will be only hunting down and killing.

Oh God! The horror that awaits everyone!

Oh, I don't know. I feel they've been instrumental in keeping (relative) world peace since the end of the last world war.

But on micro-level issues, they're much better at maintaining peace rather than stopping belligerence.

Hamas is evil and wrong. But the root causes of this are with Israel. They're both the cause of Hamas and they failed to contain them.

I've maintained that Israel cannot be both a Jewish state and a democracy. That theory is about to be tested in a very bad way.

NATO has kept the peace. The UN has done nothing.

Hamas has never shown the slightest interest in peaceful coexistence. Why should they? They don't depend on the consent or well being of their "citizens".

Tell me...how would you deal with a sworn enemy next door with a history of violence against you and your family and more to come?

    I don't know.

At every choice between war and peace the Palestinian terrorists chose war, starting in the Mandate, in 1948, and until now. One side is dedicated to the compete destruction of the other side.

This time, I'm deeply afraid, will be different. It's already different.

Incidentally, notice that zero efforts to stop the killing are coming from any of the surrounding Arab states. Not even Egypt who has a land border with Gaza, is lifting a finger. All of these governments are quite happy to let Israel solve their Gaza problems for them. They understand well that Hamas is the agent of Tehran.

Right now, there need to be safe places for Gaza civilians to go with food, water, medical care, and shelter. I don’t know how effective the UN operated spaces are since Israel cut off water and electricity.

This is turning into a war of annihilation.

"Free Palestine" and kill all the Jews, you mean? That's been the rhetoric since the Palestinians rejected the partition plan in 1948.

I just realized something even worse. The U.S. is also willing to let Israel solve the Gaza problem for us. We aren’t going to stop it either.

    My god.

According to Reuters, a "senior Hamas official" says that Hamas is open to discussing a truce since Hamas achieved its objectives.

Well, why not? That's how all previous flare-ups ended. What Hamas doesn't yet seem to understand is that Israel has decided to end the terrorist threat for good and won't consider any ceasefire unless and until the U.S. forces Israel to stop fighting.

Do not put words in my mouth. But would you rather the Jews kill the Muslims?

I don't want anyone to kill anyone. But you don't seem anxious to deny the sentiment that is fundamental to Palestinian "liberation" doctrine.

The next question is whether Israel will launch a ground invasion. My guess is "Yes" and that will greatly increase casualties among the Gazan population. It's sickening.

In fact, faced with that probability, I think the U.S. needs to pressure Israel to negotiate a truce. We aren't doing that and we need to.

The alternative will be wholesale death among civilian men, women and children.

You start by stopping the occupation and blockade. (Yes, Israel still occupies Gaza.) You start by accepting that Palestine is to be a separate state. You start by stopping the running of the world's largest prison camp.
