    Me first: You're xenophobic.

And unless you're 100% Native American, you're also an insufferable hypocrite. Your family got theirs, so screw everyone else?

But more than that, you're economically ignorant as well. Immigrants don't just take your slice of a static pie. Their presence expands the economy, leading to a bigger pie for everyone, especially in the long run.

God bless 'em. Open the gate!

    Steve,

Thank you for your reply. Actually many studies have also shown uncontrolled immigration is economically negative. I unapolegetically express my views. I also see uncontrolled immigration as a public health/environmental issue. Many diseases which were nearly either wiped out or controlled are returning to our nation due to illegal immigration. Many immigrants legal and illegal do not have health insurance either. Many times the only doctor these people have access to is in an emergency room. This in return, puts pressure on hospitals and health care providers to either absorb these costs or pass them on to consumers which can pay. Since 1993 over 80 hospitals have been forced to close in the state of California. It was due to many persons of immigrant status not having insurance. Am I saying deny these people medical care, no that makes the situation worse from a public health perspective. We just need to control our borders. As from an environmental point of view, common sense dictates the more people a country takes in, this leads to more environmental damage which needs to be corrected. This also costs a great deal of money. Who pays for all of this? The taxpayer! Which in turn, is economically negative. I see that my prior post made you a little "onery". Again, I unapolegetically express my views. You have the right to feel the same as you do. I respect your views and wish you the best!

Actually, the Native Americans got here by walking from Siberia to Alaska during the Ice Age. So even they came from elsewhere (albeit, quite a few millenia before the rest of us). :)

Another point I would like to add is the United States is not a land of infinite economic and natural resources! This is a land of FINITE resources. The more immigrants who come to our country in uncontrolled numbers, the more rapidly those resources dwindle. Therefore, the better we control our borders, IMHO, the longer America has the resources to properly take care of American citizens and persons who immigrate to our land legally in controlled numbers!

As Lou pointed out, human resources ARE economic resources, and increasingly they're the most important kind. Unless there's a system in which immigrants have access to welfare (and I agree that shouldn't be the case), they're not using anything they're not paying for. That means they're not a drain on the economy, they're a boost to it.

Go spend a couple of hours in the waiting room of your local Social Security office, and watch the people who are 70+, and can't speak a word of English, line-up for SSI.

If they aren't a drain, I don't know what is.

The problem grown from immigration are definatly happining. I know several people, my wife included, that had car accidents with immigrants who couldnt speak english, and were driving vehicles that they had no insurance on. It is that kind of behavior that show no respect for us or our laws. And yes MY RATE WENT UP because Jose, and his name was Jose, didnt have insurance on the car he ran my wife off the road in. This story is very common where i live.

As for SSI, Im against any entitlement program period. Cant help it. Libertarian mindset..

I heard stories like this all the time when I lived in South Florida. I don't have a problem deporting people who are convicted of laws.

Incidentally, the problem to me isn't not speaking English, it's not being insured.

Indeed. I'm sure what Bruce says is true. We're agreeing here.

English is important to me because it seems to show a lack of respect. If you cant speak english, and cant read it, how can you safely navigate a highway?

I think this issue has alot of consensus on both sides of the ball and will be a HUGH issue in the 06 and 08 races.

I managed to drive in rural Mexico as a tourist without killing anyone. While I could see knowing the local language as useful for not getting lost, I don't see it as necessary to keep you from trying not to collide with other vehicles.

Having said that, I agree that it's both polite and practical when moving somewhere new to learn its dominant language. My wife has relatives in Martinique, for example, and we've talked about going there someday. If so, I'd take it on myself to learn French ahead of time.

    You may be right.

Yeah, writing English is a HUGH problem, but not only for inmigrants. DEFINATLY :D

Now seriously, the world has changed a great deal the last years, and now more and more poor people from poor countries try to migrate to richer areas. It will happen as long as there are economic and political differences between the States and its neighbors. It happens in Europe; and it happens in the US. Nevertheless, and this is a fact, it is way easier to integrate a Jose, than it is to integrate a Mohammed.

BTW, traffic signs are meant to be international, that is; they are universal

I agree that Jose is easier to work wiith, but I think the point is there is no legal difference between Jose and Mohammad. If your an illegal your an illegal period. I do think that alot of people from other countries embody the traits that are lost here..Self-reliance, work ethic, sense of family..so they are definatly a good influance in that manner, and ,makes then natural conservatives (grin). I just want people to respect our laws thats all. You cant be arbitrary based on origin or ethnic background. I work with a guy from Iraq, loves this country and strives to become part of the party of this society and not bring the one he left, or in this case ran from, with him. Just a thought...

Lou, you’re right. It is absolutely depressing to see how illegal emigrants contribute to break all social structures. CNN International is broadcasting currently a special show on the identity crisis they claim Europe suffers as a consequence of immigration. People call Europe Eurabia so you can imagine how serious the problem is. Holland, a country that was famous for its tolerance, has turned into a hostile place to immigrants. However, whether we like it or not, illegal emigrants will keep on coming (to the US or Europe) as long as they are needed, on one hand. Let’s face it. There are hundreds of jobs that no European or American will take. There is a call effect. On the other hand, as long as there are economic and political differences, no wall or police will stop those immigrants. I have said already. For me, the only permanent solution is to strengthen the economy and the political environment (i.e. promoting democracy) of those countries those immigrants come from (South America in your case, the Maghreb in ours). If no money and political aid is invested, those people would keep on coming for a better life. Reagrds.

As the Baby Boomers start to retire, it may be best to have as many young workers in country as possibly to avoid the collapse of Social Security and similar government pension systems. Europe in particular should consider this as they continue to turn up their nose at the prospect of Turkey as an EU member.

Yes, Turkey, nice..... But if that labor need truly exists, why shouldn´t Europeans diversify the origin of their immigration? I think many people would love to see as well South Americans or Africans or South East Asians, for instance. Paradoxically this variety may help create a more cohesive society. Turkey has been given a chance to enter the EU, but it still needs to prove itself. We´ll see. In fact, it has many enemies here. The European Commission, for instance, predicted long transition times to apply Schengen even if they met all political and economical criteria. In different words, the strategic importance of Turkey is not its people (labor) really. Nevertheless, they may still make it..... Turkey is the most European of Muslim countries, it is a bridge to both worlds. Perhaps some think that a bridge doesn´t belong to neither shore. Only time will tell.

I suppose I can see how pluralism might help to dilute conflict arising from having a single strong minority group.

I read an interesting article recently suggesting that if Europe doesn't take advantage of Turkey's interest in joining the EU, Turkey may eventually give up on Europe and end up in Russia's orbit instead.

Nevertheless, they may still make it..... Turkey is the most European of Muslim countries, it is a bridge to both worlds. Perhaps some think that a bridge doesn´t belong to neither shore. Only time will tell.

Perhaps. But wouldn't Albania, Kosovo, and Bosnia be the most European of Muslim countries?

Steve, I hope no one minds I paste this article. I would provide just the link but it requires free registration. This is what a Turkish newspaper publishes today (I happen to read Turkish newspapers ona daily basis as a habit I developed sillily ...). You are right to say Turks are given the chance to join the EU because they would be way more dangerous drifting away. The article shows a little of it. Albania and those minuscule states are European whereas Turkey´s "Europeanness" is at the very least questionable. Bosnia et al. carry no specific weight in the Muslim world, they are considered to be outsiders. Thus the strategic value of Turkey´s EU entrance is superior to that of those countries you mention whose importance to build bridges to the Muslim world to avoid clashes is very relative. This is the article.

  20. Many here are racist and ill informed. The lands now called "Calfiornia", "Arizona", "New Mexico", "Texas", and more were stoled from the Mexican People. We have a right to be in the lands stolen from us. Hispanics will retake these lands not through force or terrorism. But through numbers. Hispanics will be the majority in the future through immigration and births. We will retake our land and return Aztlan to Mexico. All others than Hispanics in these lands need to return to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Other than the Native Americans and Hispanics all should return home to their homelands as they are invaders in Aztlan.
