At the risk of offending our original poster (not my intent) I'd like to say that the provided list is really not vewry useful. It is, essentially, a list of all British universities. Virtually all of them offer a research doctoral degree in something. So should I look through every name on the list in hopes that it might contain the one specialized program that I am seeking? If so, then here's another list for those with a mind to spend endless hours surfing the net only to find nothing new.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great area for discussion. But let's not lose sight of the fact that what we've been given is simply a set of urls to british university homepages. 5 seconds on google would give you the same thing.

This site is missing the University of Bolton; the first school I studied at (a long time ago).

No offense at all. Actually there are more than 115 U.K. Universities, this short (cursory) list are the ones that claim to support PhD by publication.

So it hardly provides a complete list of U.K. universities. Unless someone has a lot of academic publication experience in peer reviewed journals, it may be easier to just complete an original research PhD.

The PhD by publication has many more requirements than just binding together your previous work.

    airfare to SA

I will be heading over to South Africa, from Florida the first of October to present my doctoral research proposal at the University of Zululand. Flying first to DC, then Joburg, then to Durban (where my awsome prof is going to pick me up). Airfare is $1500 (coach - feel my pain). Luckily work is picking up my ticket, so my wife is going with me on our dime.

My tuition for the first full year came to less than $900 US. It was thanks the regular posters on this board that I even knew to look into the SA programs. It is working out great so far. I looked at some UK programs, but more at Australian ones. They were just too expensive for me, and the preceived prestige of, say, U of Southern Queensland did not outweight the benefits of UZulu given that I would be doing the same research for either program.

Hi Jon - I don't want to be overly contentious but you seem to have said two very different things. In your first posting you stated that the list was the set of British universities that allowed the PhD to be awarded by research (with various residency requirements) and then subsequently you said that the list was the set of British universities that allowed the PhD by publication. We know that these are two distinctly different processes. Can you clarify?

The Centre for Labour Market Studies of the University of Leicester offers the Ph.D. It is 2-3 years full-time or 4-6 years part-time. Fees are 8,800 pounds per year (full-time), half that for part-time. That means your tuition is about $54K for the entire program at current exchange rates.

(The Doctorate in Social Sciences, a taught program, is half that.)

Thanks. The CLMS at Leicester is one of the programs I have looked at. Unless I can attract an Overseas research scholarship to allow me to pay the home rate, I think it will be unlikely I will proceed with that course.

I like the people at Leicester and it seems to have a good reputation.

Yes. They are mostly both. All of the ones that offer PhD by publication also offer PhD by Research (quite standard in the U.K.). I think you will find all of the ones on the list to offer the latter (PhD by research).

Sorry to mix the methods. Not everyone offers PhD by Publication, but almost all (in the U.K.) offer the PhD by research.

Have you received any encouragement that this sort of funding may be possible? I have had some very preliminary discussions with an English university concerning a research PhD but they have not mentioned any funding opportunities of this sort. This would obviously make a PhD much more attractive, because at the present cost structure it is pretty dificult to justify as compared to other educational opportunities.

Regarding Leicester I agree that the school has a good reputation and certainly seems to be an excellent choice for a research PhD.

I have not recieved any direct encouragement. I would not expect any until a serious proposal is put forth. I am working on my final project for the MBA presently, reading, learning, and collecting literature and information I will need for my dissertation proposal.

The Universities themselves seem to have a lot of say as to who receives an Overseas Research Scholarship.

In short I won't ask until I am prepared to make a class-A presntation. They are said to be for exceptional students, that means you need to be politically connected (I am not) or have an exceptional proposal and plan to carry out the PhD.

I also intend to make my presentation in person.

    source of your list

    Dear Mr. Jon Hanson,

It seems that you copied my list of U.K. research doctorates and my comments for some of the programs without even mentioning the source of the list. That's not good.

    Here is the original list

Jon, that's ok since you don't know the actual source. No big deal.

I'm considering applying for an UK PhD program in the near future. Is there anything like an online community/forum of current uk phd by research students? Would be great to get some more insights...

Hi Woho - I know of no forum that serves all UK grad students. However, it is not unusual for each school to have it's own forum. If you have a few schools that interest you most you can often gain partial access (read but not write). Beyond that, many departments will list their grad students, along with contact info. You can frequently contact them directly to ask them about their experiences. Good luck.

    Woho,

During my recent trip to Grenoble to for intake, my fellow (students) researchers mentioned that Grenbole has discussion groups on Facebook and MySpace. You may find similar discussion groups on these or other networking sites. Perhaps there are simialr UK discussion groups available. Just a thought.

    No residency, low cost

Anyone know which UK universities from the list offer low cost PhD in Business without residency?

Not sure about the UK, but South African degrees are very inexpensive and some (such as UNISA) do not require a residency. However, with that said, you may need to visit SA a couple of times to meet with your advisor, defend your dissertation, etc. It all depends upon the degree you wish to pursue and the department responsible. I would contact the UNISA business/commerce department to find out more info regarding this question.

In addition, if you decide to apply with UNISA, I would recommend visiting the following site: http://www.iaci-canada.com/. This organization is contracted by UNISA to provide U.S. and Canadian students assitance with all of the details around registering and attending UNISA.

    Good Luck!

    Tom
