Best of all, she never mounted any attempt to overthrow the government by violence despite being a lifelong Republican. What GOP frontrunner can make THAT claim?

I found this extremely funny! In part because it is so true. It perfectly captures how low my standards and expectations in Republicans have sunk.

Would Democrats fret over Biden's age if he was guaranteed to win re-election?

This isn't about age, nor competence. It's about an election.

Yes. An election which Democrats must not lose! The fascist party will exploit any perceived weakness they can find or lie about. Yes, I’m nervous.

It's unfortunate that every election has been a "must not lose" since 2016, and we're seeing the backlash when we do (e.g Roe v Wade overturned, the reshaping of the Supreme Court, the backsliding of democracy)

Pearl clutching is what Republicans do when Fetterman wears a hoodie.

Fetterman dresses like a slob! I like him. He has a good sense of humor and he dresses like a slob. :D

I was thinking about Mitt Romney's announcement in the context of this thread. I didn't realize how much I liked Mitt. I disagree with him on many policies but I know he loves this country as much as I do. I know that he respects our constitution and our democracy as much as I do. The most stupid thing he ever said was "Corporations are people too!" I knew what he meant but it was a very stupid thing for a presidential candidate to say. I was mostly just amused. If he'd become President. It would mean some policies that I might not agree with are more likely to be implemented but our country and the USA within the context of the world community would remain about as strong.

We now have Republicans daily attacking our democracy and weakening our country. We have the likely Republican nominee threatening generals, election workers, political opponents, judges, FBI, criminal investigators, etc.

I hope nobody ever makes either of those comments about me! :)

Mitt (2014) is a fantastic documentary, behind the scenes of his 2012 Presidential campaign. It's available for streaming on Netflix in the US. It really humanized me to him. John McCain* and Mitt Romney are two examples of Republicans whom I can disagree with on policy but still believe they are honest and genuine and want the best for the country. Sometimes tax cuts are useful. Sometimes cutting red-tape is helpful. Sometimes aggressive military action is warranted. But many Republicans want things Democrats because don't want them, rather than having a platform of their own.

    Edit:

*Even though McCain has since passed, and he said he would personally railroad the military careers of any military officers who supported Bowe Bergdahl not getting jailtime for desertion.

What happened on Jan 6 was NOT "pearl clutching drama". People died. Both Houses of Congress had to be evacuated for their own physical safety. The clear intent was to stop the count.

Now the criminal who instigated that outrage is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. He must not succeed.

Try to tell that to those (many) who support him, and see how far you get. Saying "he must not succeed" isn't going to stop it from happening. I don't know what kind of rational, non-criminal action would. I just don't see a good outcome here. Even though it's not on my turf - it's close and I'm bewildered and a little frightened. 2024 looks like the first of some very, very bad years.

The good outcome is that he's unlikely to win. He only won in 2016 with a minority of popular votes last time due to a fluke in the US electoral system, because he was running against an historically unpopular candidate (sorry Stanislav, but rightly or wrongly, it's true), and with a lot of luck to eke out pluralities in just the right states.

So, your doom and gloom is a bit premature. Although I certainly agree it speaks poorly that he's even still on the national stage at this point.

I hope it is premature, Steve. I wish it were totally unfounded, but I still get the feeling it isn't. His being on the national stage now? Totally demoralizes me - I get this awful sinking feeling I REALLY don't like -- especially at 80.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I hope you've called it right -- and in my less fearful moments, I believe you likely have. Some more of those moments -- and maybe it'll be OK.

Everything Steve says is true. The very unsettling thing about it is that in 2016 I thought Clinton was going to win. I think Trump's win gave me Trump Derangement Syndrome. My TDS flairs up again when thinking about 2024.
    :D

No. It's not "derangement" syndrome because the danger is real and your response isn't deranged. Maybe call it "Trump Rangdment Syndrome"?

Thinking back on 2016, my naivety was "cute". I was shocked that Trump won and based on the things he said during the campaign I was concerned. He turned out to be so much worse than I thought. So much worse than I could possibly imagine.

Yesterday Cassidy Hutchinson did a very interesting interview on the Rachel Maddow Show. She said that at one point she loved Trump but by the end of his administration she concluded he was a horrible President that should never be allowed near power again.

I always think back to "He's not hurting the people he needs to be." Lots of people love Trump because they think they won't be targeted by him and love that he has no morals. But he has no agenda except getting whatever he can for himself and eventually they get tossed aside when they're not useful.
