As an historical aside, Cortez and his little band could never have conquered Central Mexico or defeated the Aztecs but for massive assistance they received from the Aztecs' subject peoples.

And...the help of a freed slave. If you're interested in a complex and controversial part of the history of the founding of modern Mexico, read up on "La Malinche".

The timing of the federal trials, along with the fact that 98% of federal cases end in convictions, means it is very likely the Republican Party will be nominating a convicted felon when the RNC meets in Milwaukee.

If so, the real irony: Donald Trump will be eligible to run for President of the United States, but he will not be able to vote in the election.

This may be true, but I don't think this is a safe to apply to this unusual situation.

Here's my prediction. If Trump has to serve time in jail he will not get butt f... I mean he will not be anally molested. He will likely not be housed with hard core convicts and even if he is he will likely have secret service protection and/or MAGA convicts that will protect him.

I don't think there is any way Trump avoids conviction. I doubt seriously he'll even go to trial. He'll plead it out to avoid imprisonment. But...

I also don't think he'll go to prison. No one except angry voters really wants that. Jailing a past president is not uncommon in real democracies, but I don't think the US wants that. And I KNOW the DoJ doesn't want it. The Judiciary doesn't want it. And the Federal Bureau of Prisons cannot possibly want to incarcerate the guy.

I suspect he'll work an Agnew, plus some tough home confinement with significant restrictions.

We're discussing some very interesting uncharted territory. I have a tendency to want to believe a Spiro Agnew type deal. We have to remember though that Agnew was facing just one case. I can see potential reluctance possible by the various parts of the sentencing system when dealing with a once, twice or even thrice convicted felon. On the other hand, Agnew was a VP and DJT is an ex-president.

    Perhaps a minimum security prison?

Trump may be counting on jury nullification, and he may be right.

Confinement? To Mar-a-Lago? Oh my, what a TERRIBLE punishment! Laughable. If you really want to see him get justice --- put him in a women's prison - general population. One hour - problem solved. Nobody saw anything, right?

He attempted to overthrow violently the constitutional process for identifying the next President while "serving" as President himself. I am not kidding or exaggerating. He should receive death.

While I tend to agree with the general sentiment, I'd guess this would be bad for the country, at least in the short term. The MAGA crowd would be extremely upset and social chaos could follow. Better, I think, would be for Trump to be silenced and quietly fade away into oblivion. In the long term a harsher sentence might deter future similar activity from some future despot though.

Perhaps. But that just gets you a hung jury, open for re-trial. Also, faithless jurors can face charges themselves. (I don't know how frequently that happens, though.)

If his travel is restricted and under guard--hospital visits and the like--and his internet access is severely limited (or eliminated), and visitation is limited, and he's supervised 24/7, then it can be pretty bad for a narcissistic toddler with the attention span of a gnat on speed.

I would prefer chaos over the real possibility of a second Trump run and the end of our democracy.
