They don't have that ability :)

But it's something I'm planning to work on. It's a little complicated because I first have to move all the existing users to a different usergroup, allow longer signatures for that usergroup, and change the settings for the default usergroup to disallow signatures.

The amount of work that has to be done just to keep the board from being overrun with spam is really annoying.

It sounds like running this forum is like running a network using active directory!

Cheers to the new moderators, good members all!

If it isn't a set number and fluctuates based on the user then I see the point. Spam on these boards is ignorant anyway, I really don't see how they profit after putting in so much time and effort.

While I have not interacted much with any of the new mods, I have read many of there posting and look forward to their continued contributions on the board. Congratulations on your new responsibilities.

The deal is, we have a high page rank, and by posting links that point back to their crappy site(s), they increase their own page rank. So they could care less if anyone actually *reads* what they post, they are going for search engine ranking. And most of it is automated; we get some 300 fraudulent registrations a day, about 95% of which are caught by our various tools and rejected or banned immediately. It's really messed up.

The sad thing is, when I contact the people whose sites are being spammed, almost without fail, they have hired some SEO development consultant who, in turn, has hired a bunch of Indian spammers. The owner of the site is never told how the SEO is being done, and most are horrified when they discover what's happening. Several hired a local consultant and were told he or she was doing all the work personally; they are upset to discover that the consultant has farmed all the work out to a sweatshop in India.

300 a day is amazing, business must be good for these guys.

Or very bad, showing that they are desperate.

I once interpreted (as in language interpreting) an intro to e-business community college course where the teacher encouraged his students to spam, spam, spam, make false registrations and give false testimonials on review sites. I kid you not, they teach this stuff in college

I've posted more often (if not more frequently) than anyone else ever (except Ted, it now seems). Also, I go back to the a.e.d. days that, eventually, spawned this board. Also, I have the demonstrated subject matter expertise. But moderating the board would impinge on my ability to post what I want when I want. I'll pass. But your "eek" emoticon is both insulting and uninformed. I question whether you have the temperament to perform the role. Let's hope you improve from here.

I don't think any disrespect was intended but rather just what you stated yourself, I think it was implying that you are very opinionated and have strong feelings about various topics. While I am sure you would be a grand moderator and with your experience here at least they would know what they are getting but would you be good at it if you couldn't speak your mind here anymore?

Actually, I think that was Rich's version of a joke. In fact, if I imagined him telling a joke, that is exactly what I would expect it to sound like.

Why doesn't it say "Moderator" by my name? (Can it be made to say "Moderator and Distinguished Senior Member"?)

Somebody at some point gave you a custom user title, which overrides the default system title. So I edited the custom title :)

    Consider:
    "Distinguished senior memborator"

    See that would be awesome.
