    More info for you

You guys are great. Thanks for all the replies!
    Let me share more info:

    Shawn,
    First congrats for this accomplishment!

Is your goal in obtaining this PhD to go for a tenure position at State U?
With a PhD will you get a better pay at a community college?

I see the benefit of going for an MBA or an MA first, then based on how life is, how schooling was and my motivation go into a PhD program afterward.

Looking at PhD programs, I found they do not require an MA level degree as an admission requirement, so I thought I can save time by going for a PhD (and if lucky gain an MBA en route).

On the other hand, an MBA can be done online, and offers a concrete degree that would improve my employment potential. Given the PhD is very demanding and thus a chance that I may drop out of a PhD program, I see how having completed an MBA first would be useful.

What do you think of this logic?

Very good question, I like to instruct and to make people think, but have never taught in a class setting before. I am more sold on the idea of being an educator, being a professor, able to research or author, and any fringe benefits that a position as a tenured professor brings.

Thank you for bringing this up! I am an entrepreneur myself and teaching that field would be so rewarding , I had neglected this field until now. Intl business is less appealing to me.

I had ASSUMED that Entrep was a field that was saturated with candidates, as it seemed like a thing that many people would want to teach (because I think it's an interesting field) hence the assumption. Do you know of a way I can find which areas are in demand?

    Thanks
    Ethan

You really won't save time. You will still need to complete 90 credits (or so) beyond a BS. If you had a masters, that would mean you would need to complete 60 credits (or so) because 30 would/should/could be accepted from the masters program.

    Why the PhD...

    1. I wanted to teach at the college level - and I had adjunct experience, but no full-time gig. So...more school.

    2. I am fortunate that I am funded by the American Indian College Fund Faculty Development Grant (I work for a tribal college).

    3. At one time, I had the ambition to go to State U - but not now. There are a variety of reasons, but I have small class sizes in my classes, I live in a small town in the beautiful WI northwoods (great for raising my family), and I have fantastic colleagues. Plus, there is a loyalty thing. My school has provided me the means to a PhD - and I believe in karma.

And you won't save time skipping the MS/MBA as other posters have pointed out to you.

So - if you are going to do an AACSB MBA (and if you are thinking Ph.D. and teaching at State U, AACSB is your ONLY option IMHO), you might as well do it at a reasonable cost:

    Good luck!

    Shawn

PS - I will get a pay bump, but not much

In this case, my online MA must be from a respected school so I can have an easier time transferring and/or being admitted into a PhD should I chose to continue down that track

Great, makes a lot of sense. I like the "reasonable cost" part :)

Where can I find how much Biz faculty at comm. colleges make? Do you get the same amount of time off as a state uni faculty?

If you are going to follow the advice of the chap who said to forget DL and go B&M, I can give you a list of B&M schools offering the PhD in Entrepreneurship (ot the PhD in Business Policy with concentration in Entrepreneurship or the PhD in Business Strategy with concentration in Entrepreneurship). As of when I was looking for a B&M PhD in Entrepreneurship (back in 1992, though I never followed through), the options were: the University of Calgary www.ucalgary.ca, the University of Colorado Boulder www.colorado.edu, Saint Louis University www.slu.edu, and the University of South Carolina www.sc.edu. Since then, the University of California Berkeley www.berkeley.edu, the University of Louisville www.louisville.edu, and the University of Washington www.uwashington.edu (not sure which of these are AACSB) have become options (or maybe I have become aware of them). Of DL universities, California Intercontinental University www.caluniversity.edu (accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council) and Walden University www.waldenu.edu (accredited by the North Central Association) both offer the DBA in Entrepreneurship. On the other hand, many entrepreneurship professors are hired (especially as adjuncts) with an MBA plus entrepreneurial experience. I shall go to the MBA Sticky http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27695 and see if I can "tease out" some DL MBA Entreneurship degrees into their own separate thread.

A glance at the website of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (fka the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business) www.aacsb.edu reveals that ... all of the above are AACSB.

So far, Steve has advised you to major in Finance and Accounting while Han has advised you to major in Entreprepreneurship and International Business? Have you ever thought of tying them all together with a dissertation on the global aspects of the venture capital industry? Perhaps, if you go for a more applied dissertation (assuming your professors will tolerate same), you could do a proposal for a Third World microenterprise lending organization.

If you go for your doctorate full-time via a B&M school, rather than via DL, you might want to consider doing your AACSB MBA via DL and, in the meantime, grooming a manager to take over the running of your business while you're doing full-time doctoral studies.

I find it highly unlikely that AACSB will accredit any program that does not have a minimum residency component. So, technically speaking, there may never be a purely "online" or "distance" AACSB accredited doctoral program.

That's a good idea that I will keep in mind. Thanks.

Puzzling, yes you did. You stated that Grenoble is not DL. I then stated them no AACSB DBA is. You stated "Not so", then gave the two eamples of Kennsaw and UoF....... I explained how Kennsaw is exactly like Grenoble (with residencies), and UoF does not have a program offering yet, but will be short residency as well.

So, aren't Grenoble, Kennesaw and UoF all the same (I guess I am confused about when I said no AACSB doctrate is DL, and you have distibuished Grenoble from UoF and Kennesaw? They all seem the same structure to me.

With all due respects, let's not quibble over fine points. When I say DL, I usually use the term to mean both 100% DL and short residency. Hence, the examples of Kennesaw and the proposed UFL program. I never said that Grenoble cannot be done DL; I merely meant that the foreign dissertation-only programs like Grenoble (and others) are not necessarily designed as DL (and some foreign dissertation-only programs get kind of touchy when Ameriucans refer to such programs as DL). Peace.

I guess the sum of it is: There are two US-based AACSB doctoral programs (one extant and one proposed) that are short residency and some foreign-based AACSB dissertation-only docs which, while not necessarily designed as distance learning, could be pursued at a distance or with a few short visits. But none are 100% pure DL.

That only makes it more obvious that I should go for an MBA. I would not mind being an adjunct proff. of entrepreneurship.

An AACSB MBA (preferably with an Entrepreneurship concentration) via DL from a relatively well known U, mind-price range, is what I will start looking for now.

I am a little busy these days as I am studying for the GMAT, you helped me save a lot of time researching. Thank you for helping me think this through!

    On starts the search.

Did you see my MBA Entrepreneurship thread (linked in post # 50)?

    Aacsb only?

    Yep, looking at it now.

Since I may continue academically to a PhD and pursue a faculty position, the MBA in my case has to be as helpful as possible (to be honored by the PhD program, transfer credit, help me get in, provide good foundation, allow me to study/teach outside the US). The MBA I am looking for must be AACSB accredited. Correct?

Does this mean the ones listed below are not the ideal accreditations, in my case?

IACBE - International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education
DETC - Distance Education and Training Council
ACCSCT - Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of ...
    AACSS - ?
    NCA - North Central Association
    NEA - National Education Association
EQUIS - European Quality Improvement System

An AACSB MBA will definitely help if you're looking for an AACSB doc.
