I checked it out. I can assure you that if you think "we do know why there is less activity" based upon that single tiny sampling from a competing forum stemming from one leading question thrown out by you, that you will never finish that PhD due to a fundamental misunderstanding of basic research principles and methodologies. Perhaps we now know why that endeavor stalled. You just have to bring something a little more substantive than that to make a definitive statement such as you have made.

Holy cow Batman (aka FTFaculty), that's accurate! Sanantone, please don't take it personally. FTFaculty is just pointing out observable issues with your thesis.

I wouldn't use a thread to complete a dissertation, obviously. If you've come to that conclusion, then I would have to question what you learned in school.

Who said my endeavor stalled? I've only been in the program for four years, which is normal. I'm ahead of my cohort. Another ding for you.

Why should I provide serious evidence to this forum when you don't even take it seriously?

Why would I take his inaccurate statements personally? If he he knew what he was talking about, he wouldn't make a correlation between casual forum posting and how one would complete a dissertation.

Sanantone, internet chats can occasionally devolve into a one-up-man-ship or verbal tits for tats. However, if you're truthful with yourself, then you will agree that FTFaculty's response (here) was was remarkably well-thought-out.

First off, sorry, Sanatone, for being a mite on the snarky side there. Now that I've said that, I suppose this being the forum of curmudgeons, it gives me license to offer the following:

Not suggesting you would. The concern is that you thought you were making a trenchant point about this forum and had the notion that the evidence you'd manufactured over on that other one somehow made that point a fait accompli. Of course, it doesn't, not even close. You ought to know that, working on a doctorate, that should've been nailed down by now, four years in.

That's a rather stunning admission, that your evidence wasn't serious. That was my point after all.

I guess the larger question is why do you hang around here if you think we're beneath you and suitable targets for a scolding? I wouldn't want to hang around a room where I felt the need to point a finger at everyone in it and give them the business for how cranky, ineffective and fatuous they all were. I swear up and down if you take that attitude into academia, the students will roast you and colleagues will do everything they can to thwart your tenure or contract renewal.

Lighten up, Sanatone! Don't take yourself so darned seriously.

I have no interest in a tenure-track position. My student evaluations were above average when I taught. I stick around here to answer people's questions when I'm able to; most aren't regulars here. There are jobs and volunteer positions where people do not like their co-workers, but they like helping the public. Oh, and occasionally, Kizmet will find an interesting program I've never heard of.

I disagree because he made assumptions that were incorrect. He made the error because he had no factual basis to assume that my program had stalled. I passed my comp exams, which included statistics and research methods, a year before my cohort. So, his response was not well-thought-out. It was factually erroneous.

There's nothing wrong with sticking around a place to answer questions when you're able. But can you cut back on the scolding? I promise to stop being a smirking middle aged fart if you promise to be less sanctimonious. Deal?

That's not a good deal. You're just one person, and you aren't even the worst offender. LOL.

You all can be snarky all you want because it doesn't really affect me. I no longer desire assistance with my own educational journey. I'm just reiterating complaints made here and elsewhere.

I don't post here as much as some of the others, so I just haven't had enough opportunities to be a royal pain in the keester. But it sounds like a great deal to me. We can both promise to be upstanding citizens and learn to like each other. By the way, it's not that I don't like you, I guess I actually do. Sometimes we all need to be scolded. My wife scolds me a lot--and darn it, she has good reason to, living with me is not exactly a gentle breeze on a spring day. Anyway, love you, Sanatone, and knock em dead and finish that PhD. No easy task for anyone, my wife dropped out of not one but two B&M PhD programs and I never even got one, am just JD/MBA. Best to you.

Thanks. Her dream is to one day go after a PhD also. A steep mountain, though, as you know. : )

The last 71 posts in this 'missing moderator' thread have had nothing to do with the missing moderator who is, alas, still missing.

We'd organize a search party - investigate all karaoke bars and historical booksellers within a fifty-mile radius. Or maybe crowdsource you on Jeffrey Tanner's computer. (TV - Wisdom of the Crowd). HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?
