Another poster also asked about Bruce. I hope we are not all dropping like flies. I want to do the next 15. A few things I still
    need to accomplish.

Sanantone, everyone believes that they have something important to share, whenever they post it, either for education, humor, enlightenment or for belittling. Are your internet posts somehow more enlightened than those of your colleagues? If so, it should be self-evident to everyone.

I think all of us, at least on some level, think our posts are more enlightened than our colleagues. Otherwise, why would we ever post an answer to a question or express an opinion? Of course we think we're enlightening others on the objective truth. Everyone's guilty of that.

FTFaculty, yes, agreed: There are various degrees of enlightenment on multiple levels. The gift of enlightenment is because we are made in the image of God, as opposed to the unenlightened beasts of the earth.

Thanks so much, hope your daughter does well and kicks butt.
What does she want to study?

On that point, we agree 100%.

I'm still enrolled and working on my dissertation. I use terminology most people can understand, or maybe it's just terminology that police and corrections officers can understand. Most of them aren't very familiar with anything above a bachelor's. If I say I'm a candidate, they'll ask if my school schedule will get in the way of work.

If someone asks for help, and you make fun of them instead, then your post is of no value to them.

Heck, part of the game of this forum is to take a little shot at another poster and see how they handle it. We all laugh at each other and make little jabs. Tradition that goes back over a decade. Like my household. My house, with all the kids and wife and now son-in-law and grandkid (who are frequently over with oldest daughter), we all laugh at each other and poke fun. All in good humor. Not like he ran over your dog or anything. Just funning you a little.

That's nice and all (actually it's in poor form to do this to people you've just met, even over the internet), but when questions go unanswered, people will go elsewhere. That is what you see happening. It decreases activity. When people come by and see that there is little activity, they move on, and the cycle continues.

But maybe it's not all about anyone's idea of success--i.e., traffic, activity--maybe it's about a few cranky middle aged people laughing at each other's misfortunes, just having a little fun with each other, not trying to drive up traffic. Must it always be about traffic? Obviously this forum is not about making money. If you don't like it, if it's not serving your needs, then you can always say "To heck with you losers, I'm outta here." Nothing stops you from doing that. Maybe we just want to have our little thing and a little bit of online camaraderie and good-natured teasing and that's enough. We're too old and indifferent to care about anyone's notion of bottom line.

If you go back a few pages, you will see that I wasn't the one who brought up the topic of there being less activity. I'm only explaining why there is less activity. Some people are just taking offense to that explanation.

    Offended by sanantone's explanation?

Sanantone, who is "offended by your explanation"?

Oh...she's in India right now, and juggling between a high school, degree and a very cute twin boys, all at the same time :)

Hey, I don't know why there's less activity and I figure you don't either. But if it is because of some teasing that goes on, then so be it. If you think this forum is rough and tumble, good gosh, you might want to get around a bit. I've seen forums where people attack each others' heritage, go after certain religions, drop the f-bomb, mf-bomb, n-bomb, go after spouses and children, then stalk you and send threats to your email or Facebook.

By comparison, DI has some harmless curmudgeons who like to get sarcastic and chuckle a bit on occasion. This forum is like the stroke of a velvet glove compared to much of the net. And I don't think any of the gang of curmudgeons is wringing their hands in anguish over less traffic.

It's OK, Sanatone, go have a beer or two.

[Edited to remove all of my raging against Sanatone's heritage, attacks on her religion, all the f-bombs, mf-bombs, n-bombs, and the sociopathic attacks on her spouse and children] I am just being a curmudgeon and joking!

So when I walk into a new restaurant, I check out the menu. Oh look, it's Italian food. If I want Chinese food I have three options as I see them. (1) Get up and go to a different restaurant (2) Eat Italian. (3) Join the staff, take over the kitchen, become the chef, and write my own menu. ;)
Yet, I forget that today's more popular reaction is option 4, go to yelp and complain about them not being exactly what I want them to be. <snif> :baby:

Actually, we do know why there is less activity. I linked everyone to a thread where many people interested in higher education explained why they don't come here.

Of course there are rougher forums on the Internet, but they usually aren't education forums. All the "strange" education forums are pretty much dead, and they're dead for a reason. When people are looking for assistance with finding or planning a program, they usually aren't looking for all the extra nonsense. If they wanted that, they would go somewhere else.
