Yes. To validate this point. My community college had a part time ( Part time mind you) job fair. It was packed for the three hours we had it. We had PhD from a top five school in history looking for a job. TOP FIVE. We were able to give him some classes, but the field of history is really bad.

Lucky for me I'm doing it for personal satisfaction. :) If I can teach online with it down the road, awesome. If not, it's OK too. I'd like to do some teaching if I have the chance but my income doesn't depend on this degree.

The field of history is moribund - the entire field?

In fact, it depends on the sub-field. Some are much more in demand than others. Ethnic historians who can teach world history, for instance.

Ancient, Medieval and Europe? - not.

Americanist's who teach environmental and science history will do far better than colonial historians. Business historians, legal historians, are also in better demand.

So, tell us, Tireman - what field was this over-coveted PT position for?

From what I have seen, yes.

In fact, it depends on the sub-field. Some are much more in demand than others. Ethnic historians who can teach world history, for instance.

Ancient, Medieval and Europe? - not.

I am speaking toward the community college. I cannot speak for the university

Americanist's who teach environmental and science history will do far better than colonial historians. Business historians, legal historians, are also in better demand.

So, tell us, Tireman - what field was this over-coveted PT position for?

    History 1301 and History 1302....Survey.

    middle eastern history

Of all the programs in history mentioned here, do any of you know which ones might offer a concentration in middle eastern history?

    Thanks!

I don't know of any distance learning master's programs in history that specialize in just Middle Eastern history. California State University Dominguez Hills www.csudh.edu offers courses on the Ancient Near East and the Arab World. American Military University www.apus.edu probably offers courses on Middle Eastern History and the Arab Israeli Wars. Come to think of it, CSUDH allows on to take up to three sections of HUX 594 (essentially design your own course) plus requires a six-credit thesis.

Come to think of it, you could get yourself into CSUDH, take those two courses on the Ancient Near East and the Arab World, self-design three HUX 594's on Middle Eastern history and culture, write your thesis on some aspect of Middle Eastern history, and transfer in AMU's two courses on Middle Eastern history and the Arab-Israeli Wars. By the way, the name of the Middle Eastern history professor at CSUDH is David A. Churchman.

I'm glad you posted this but I think that it'd be better it in its own thread. This sticky of great History MA program info will probably get messy if we all start discussing Zinn in here.
