I am looking for an inexpensive (aren't we all) MA in History. I currently teach computers in elementary school but would like to make the change to teaching history both in middle school as well as online or at the local community college. I am in no great hurry and would be just as happy with an international degree so long as it is accredited.

I have considered Fort Hayes, AMU, and the MAIS from WNMU. I wondered if anyone knew of any international programs that may be less expensive or more interesting or preferabley both. Depending on the school my GI Bill should cover the expenses but I am definitely planning on attending either the University of Cape Town or University of Pretoria for my Ph.D and would prefer to have some money left over to do so.

    Thanks!

These might or might not fit your requirements but have you looked at Sam Houston State University (MA History) or Austin Peay State University (MA Military History)?

I don't have the links handy but Google should pull them up pretty quick.

    Depending on your state

Depending on your state, a DETC degree will work. If that is the case there are many options that open up.

So if I may suggest, call your dept o' ed and ask your employer, after all we want the lane change in pay.

If you're looking at African degrees, I believe UNISA also has several different history degree programs available via DL.

I appreciate the responses. I had looked into the MA from Austin Peay and actually spoke with Dr. Browderd about enrollment. I switched jobs and ended up pursuing the MBA. I might take a look at it again, being in-state and only a few hours away would make it very convenient.

Chasisaac I sent a request to the TN Dept of Education and received the following response (direct quote):

NO! We would not accept a degree from them! The DETC is not an accrediting body that we recognize in Tennessee.

I hate to ask this . . I was thinking that TN was one of the states you could do the Praxis in and become certified in that area. As I recall (as of a few years ago) you could do that in TN.

Take the 10941 and pass it at a 136 (which is low).
Half the test is on US history and half on World history. I did not think it was that hard of a test.

The Government one was a little more tricky. But that one the deal is to read what they are testing and the % of each section. One section is heavily weighted.

The University of West Alabama www.uwa.edu offers an Online MAT in History Education, which is offered both as a certification www.uwa.eduMedia/Website%20Resources/catalog/graduate.pdf#matcert and non-certification www.uwa.edu/Media/Website%20Resources/catalog/graduate.pdf#matnoncert degree. The certification degree is 37 hours (19 hours of education classes and 18 hours of history classes) while the non-certification degree is 33 hours (24 hours of history classes and 9 hours of education classes). Tuition is $185/hour in-state and out-of-state tuition is double the in-state tuition (to-wit, $370/hour). Thus, total program tuition (in-state) is $6,105 for the non-certification students and $6,845 for certification students while total program tuition (out-of-state) is $12,210 for non-certification students and $13,690 for certification students. The University of West Alabama is accredited by the Southern Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. www.uwa.academics/catalog (page 1 for accreditation info and page 16 for tuition info)

They do. I actually gained my initial certification through the praxis tests. I am taking two more March 14, 0014 Elementary Ed and 0353 Special Ed.

I wanted to find out if I could use DETC to upgrade my pay at the secondary level.

Ted, thanks for the post. I wonder if you could negotiate to have in-state tuition if you are military.

Harrison Middleton University www.chumsci.edu offers the MA in Humanities www.chumsci.edu/pages/degree/masters.asp and the MA in Social Sciences www.chumsci.edu/pages/degree/m_SocSci.asp based on the Great Books of the Western World. The 36-hour program requires nine 4-credit courses, which includes one cornerstone course (the Great Conversation), seven self-designed courses, and one capstone course (Thesis/Project). If one designs each of one's courses around specific authors of the Great Books, one could design history-related courses around Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Tacitus, Edward Gibbon, American State Papers (the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution) and the Federalist Papers, and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (Philosophy of History), and, with the new additions in the second edition of the Great Books of the Western World, Johan Huizinga. Tuition www.chumsci.edu/pages/learnMore/tuitionFees.asp is $275/hour. Thus, total program tuition is $9,900. Harrison Middleton University is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. www.chumsci.edu/pages/learnMore/accreditation.asp

Prescott College www.prescott.edu used to advertise an MA in Southwest History, so named. The Master of Arts Program www.prescott.eduacademics/map/index.html staff page www.prescott.edu/faculty_staff/faculty/map.html indicates that staff is available to support graduate historical studies, in particular Jared Aldern (Southwestern environmental history), Dereka Rushbrook (Southwest history, border issues), and Priscilla Stuckey (American church history, particularly women & religion). The program length is 40 hours. www.prescott.edu/academics/map/how.html#length Tuition is $567/hour part-time (6-11 hours) or $6,804/term full-time (12-16 hours). www.prescott.edu/academics/map/tuition.html Thus, 40 hours at the part-time rate of $567/hour comes to a total program tuition of $22,680. Tuition for three full-time semesters (12 hours each, for 36 hours total) would be $20,412 ($6,804 x 3), leaving four hours at $567/hour ($567 x 4 = $2268), for a total of $22,680. Tuition for two full-time semesters (16 hours each, for 32 hours total) would be $13,608 ($6804 x 2), leaving a total of eight hours at $567/hour ($567 x 8 = $4536), for a total of $18,144. Prescott College is accredited by the North Central Association. www.prescott.edu/administration/hlc.html

Not having been in the military myself, I wouldn't have thought of that, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks again Ted. This seems like a great program and extremely affordable. What would be your opinion of this program vs. AMU?

You will note from my sig line that I washed from both the MA in Humanities/History emphasis at California State University Dominguez Hills www.csudh.edu (27 hours completed and passed) and the MA in Military Studies/Civil War Studies concentration at American Military University www.apus.edu (18 hours completed and passed). I enjoyed both. The HUX program is broader-based, starting with a broad exposure to at least three (6 hours) of the five humanities (history, literature, music, art, and philosophy) and then proceeding to 12 hours of coursewok (plus a required 6-hour thesis) in the concentration 6 six hours of "minor and supporting coursework" (or, alternatively, take the Interdisciplinary Studies concentration, which would be 10 hours - all five - of the Defining the Humanities courses, then five Interdisciplinary Studies courses - 15 hours - and a 5-hour thesis). So, the HUX program starts out very broadly-based before one specializes (unless one majjors in Interdisciplinary Studies) and require a thesis. By comparison, AMU's programs were and are more specialized by nature and, at the time that I was in the program, did not offer a thesis (though they do now give you the choice of thesis or non-thesis option). The AMU program, when I was there, was a 36-hour program that had one required 3-credit course, Research Methods in Military Studies, and, if I recall correctly, you could take all of the remaining courses in your major (though you were allowed to take up to 9 hours of outside minor courses). Both programs were fun and very rigorous, requiring on average 1000 pages of reading and 30 pages of writing. The professors from the HUX program maintain a greater degree of control in assigning term paper topics while the AMU professors allow the student much greater latitude in determining term paper topics. That's about all I can think of.

Note: HES once required only one semester on campus. Nowadays, it seems, one must do half the degree on campus.
