At what point does one become a "senior member"?

Indeed, it does appear that it is publish or perish on this forum. I know that I joined this forum since its first days of establishment. Yet, I am not a "senior member" because I choose to listen (read) and assimilate the discourse. I remained a "newbie" quite a while even though I was not in fact.

    Interesting observation, Hworth!

There appears to be a flaw in the counter of this threaded discussion software. I posted in both "BA or BS, which one and why?" and "Has FSU's program been discussed here". Both threads show me with 46 posts. This happened to me earlier when I did over a dozen posts that all showed "Posts: 29"

Perhaps there is some big, bad conspiracy to keep me from becoming one of the elite "senior" members.

The number of posts are cumulative, are they not? IOW, even your very first post will show the cumulative total number of messages posted, right?

It would appear that if one posts several times under the same thread the number of posts attributed to the individual do not change.

I have got the formula for changing my status.:D

If you go to different threads and post monosyllables like "Wow", "LOL", "Huh" the recorded number of posts increase.

Well, not to burst anyone's bubble, but as far as I know,

    a. The designation for "senior member" and "member" are completely arbitrary. I don't even think that we changed them from the defaults that came with the discussion board software. Hell, we could mess with everyone's mind and make everyone a "member of equal standing" or some such, because I think it's all rather pointless.

    b. I *think* that it adds to your total post count for *every* post you make, whether to the same thread or to different threads.

    c. Anyone who has been a member for more than 6 months, posted at least 50 times, and has not attained senior member status can feel free to email forum at crcorp dot net and I will happily make you a senior member.

    d. In case some people missed the sarcasm, there is absolutely no registration/verification/anything else process involved in moving from "member" to "senior member."

We have discussed -- and may implement in the future -- the concept of "verified member" so that those who choose to do so may provide us proof of their identity, which might be a middle ground in solving the credibility problem with having anonymous posters. But right now, our efforts are focused on more useful things. like feature enhancements to degreeinfo.

Response: My examination of several threads, including this one, seems to indicate that the posts attributed to an individual do not change if the posting is under the same thread.

Could you check it out in this thread, for example?

If I am right this post will still be no 6 for me.

Amazingly, I see the possiblity of something substantive coming out of this 'should-be-in off-topic discussions' thread. I loved the idea of 'verified member' that Chip mentioned in his post. I would certainly recommend moving that up on the priorities' list.

Seniority Counts! Senior Members are Special!

You mean I had my official college transcripts forwarded to DegreeInfo.com for nothing?

And all this time, I thought I was special because it says "Senior Member" under my name. :(

Chip, you just think your special because it says "administrator" under your name. ;)

(I guess that means that you are special!)

To verify or not to verify; that is the question!

I am all for being verified! I am very verifiable! But, what will it mean? Via credit card? Credit check? Notary Public authenticated document? What and how?

I don't think that's true (not absolutely certain). I believe the number changes provided you don't "serial post".........i.e. where you follow one of your own posts immediately with another....

There should be a contest on member posts -- first person to reach 10,000 posts they can be upgraded to "exhalted member.":D

    frightening

I'm too young to be a "senior citizen"!!! LoL :)
I think it is frightening that I could be considered to be proficient enough to be a "senior"

    Exalted Grand Puba

Is that anything like the exalted grand puba? In that case, Fred Flinstone may qualify too. On another note though, I am really surprised how popular this particular discussion thread has become. Maybe posters just want some lighthearted banter.

Instead of "verifying" identity of the posters merely for the sake of establishing legitimacy of the posts, I would recommend that the forum be divided into two categories. The first would be guest posters. This would include new posters and allow individuals to make up to 50 or so posts. After they're reached their limit, they either become members or continue to read the forum without being able to post. The second category would be "members." These individuals would pay a nominal membership fee (amount to be determined). I've heard that maintaining this forum can be quite expensive.

    Just a thought!

    its just safe

This is a fairly safe thread. Hard for anyone to get really flamed for being a senior. LoL
