"That means the statistical likelihood of any given public school student being killed by a gun, in school, on any given day since 1999 was roughly 1 in 614,000,000."

Perhaps you truly believe the odds of a gun ban are even lower than that. But if so, that definitely only makes one of us.

I have one of those at home too. What's your point?

It is true that Israeli gun laws are stricter than American gun laws, but conversely, Israeli law mandates that more people must carry firearms in public places (on a per capita basis). In the United States, the Second Amendment is optional, which is why there are fewer armed Americans (in public) than there are armed Israelis (on a per capita basis).

An assault rifles ban is likely because it's happened before. A total ban on guns is definitely less likely than the odds of being shot at school. The shootings happen multiple times each year. Guns haven't been taken away in how long? This isn't something that can just be passed by Congress. You either need a dictator to take power, for the entire Supreme Court to be made up of left wing extremists for a new interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, or enough states to agree to remove the 2nd Amendment from the Constitution.

An interesting piece of history I just learned recently. When Reagan was governor of California, he signed gun control legislation after the Black Panthers started open carrying and exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. The NRA supported those gun control measures as well as other gun laws when white ethnic immigrants (Italians, Irish, etc.) were open carrying. Maybe if black people and immigrants start open carrying in mass again, we'll get new gun legislation.

You mean the majority of Israelis who have military training?

    He is correct
Me Again is correct on this. Extra security protocols will be easy to defeat by current and former students. I never did school security, but I did work security at government facilities for many years.

I'm not going to reveal specific weaknesses in the security where I worked, but we had armed guards at the one point of entry available at many facilities. Anyone could have easily gotten on to the property with a gun or bomb. The only things that would have worked were a high, brick wall completely surrounding the acres of property and vehicle searches. The only reason why no one attacked us is because no one cared to, but we did have spouses get on to the property and a domestic violence incident. An employee with a grudge would have bypassed security easily.

Also, when I worked at a military base last year in response to a hurricane, I noticed how easy it was for almost anyone to be allowed in and have access to almost the entire base. As a matter of fact, there was a recent incident of this guy getting on to a base multiple times while posing as a military officer. He also got in as a visitor of the Civil Air Patrol and was allowed to wander around unescorted. I had a legitimate purpose to be on base, but all I needed to do was show my driver's license, and I got to go back to the emergency operations center because I had my organization's shirt on. Anyone can order that shirt online. They didn't even ask for my organization's ID. I've gotten into secure areas of airports without showing anything. I tried to show my ID to the state trooper. Human guards (even police officers) and office workers responsible for checking identification are the biggest security weaknesses.

It doesn't take an entire anti-gun SCOTUS, just five illiberal justices.

And yet Mark Robinson became a celebrity overnight, gaining praise from conservatives all over the country, with this speech:

Do you know how long it takes to replace people on the Supreme Court? Supreme Court judges are nominated by presidents. A person could be president for two terms and only get to nominate one or two people. Then, a president from another party can come in and swing the court the other way. Even when the Supreme Court had a stricter (some would argue more liberal) interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, there was not a total ban on guns. States still had a lot of freedom when it came to gun laws.

Our constitution became effective 229 years ago, and we haven't had a total gun ban yet. Somehow, you still believe that a gun ban is more likely than a kid getting shot at school. Okay...

How does one token black man making a speech erase the racist history of the NRA? Even the KKK has a black man who hangs around with them. Did the NRA speak up for Philando Castile, who was legally carrying his gun? Did conservatives scream about constitutional carry after Alton Sterling was shot?

School shootings are sexy and attention-grabbers, so the left and the media love them. Meanwhile, the streets of Chicago (where guns are essentially banned for everyone but the police), the streets run red with the blood of people killed by gunfire.

I guess those from the lower socioeconomic classes as victims don't fit the narrative of the left and the media, because they regularly give it a good leaving alone.

Guns are not banned in Chicago. They can't be because of a Supreme Court decision several years ago. Many of the guns in Illinois come from Indiana. Gun bans don't work when people can just drive across the state line and get them. People can even get them across international borders. A lot of guns in Mexico come from the U.S.

If you actually bothered to talk to black people who live in high-crime areas, they, too, tend to be for more gun control. If you don't know any black people who have lived in high-crime areas, you can talk to me. I'm one of those people.

I am not a big fan of personally owning/using a gun, however we have been living in a part of the world where everyone knows how to use a gun, and almost every home has a gun. I have been encouraging my wife to have one so when we go out on the land we feel safer, not necessarily harm from humans.
I am not versed in US City politics, however santone, using your logic it should be Indiana that be riddled with violence for guns are more easily available there. Then there must another underlying problem why gun violence is higher in Chicago. As I said, I have been living in communities where guns are unbiquitous with no gun violence. However, in SVG where I can born gun violence is out of control and only few people own guns. Issues are never exactly so black and white, it is in the small details where we find answers.

So what, he's a "token" because he dares to differ from the opinion you think a black man should have? My point was more about the comments. It's not like conservative commentators, broadly speaking, are reluctant to say even the most trollish things. And yet comment after comment there is a verbal high five.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Their motto is, "We're bigger than Dominica."

Actually Dominica is bigger. Dominica is unique in that it still have an Indigenous Carib population. Also, there is a river for every day of the year. Dominica and St. Vincent have been historically close friends.

Alas, another thing we have in common is that we're (probably rightfully) perceived as the slowest developing of the Eastern Caribbean countries. But I have nothing but love for the 784. :)

Dominica is a Republic, The Republic of Dominica, not to be confused with the more popular and less beautiful Dominican Republic. Dominica is extremely progressive, it had a woman PM in the 70s. A very powerful woman, no tokenism. Dominica also got rid of the queen as its head of state.

Dominica is a republic, and the only formerly British country in the region to have become one from its first day of independence, but that word does not appear in its name, which is "the Commonwealth of Dominica".

Also, Dame Eugenia Charles was not Prime Minister in the '70s, she held that office from 1980 until 1995. But you're right she was no token, in fact her nickname was the "Iron Lady of the Caribbean". I saw her a few years before her death and she still had quite a presence.

Try to first get a handgun permit in Chicago, then try to buy one legally within the city limits, then tell me if they're not *ESSENTIALLY BANNED*, which is what I said.

Not only have I talked to black folks who live in high-crime areas, I've been a police officer in those very areas, and my experience is that they want the ability to defend themselves; the antithesis of gun control.

What seconds count, the police are minutes away, and I'm a cop.
