Well, well. McCarthy actually acted for the good of the country

Malaga. Or Eugene. Still not sure.

I was surprised to find Malaga had 3 times the population of Eugene. 550,000 vs 175,000. A lot of tall buildings in Malaga now, but the old beauty is still preserved. I'd imagine it's super-expensive, as it's a holiday place and hideaway for very well-to-do people. Eugene, however, looks like another city that's done a great job of preserving the old and the new. Looks like a great place to live.

My vote: Eugene - and I'm surprised to hear me say that. When I was about 18, I started to learn Spanish and I read a lot about Andalusia. Malaga was a lot smaller then and it was my dream town, around 1961. I figured - cheap wine and lots of beach front. Maybe girls! I was 18, remember? I never made it there. Now? Wow -- what a change! One thing I WOULD like, today - Malaga is a fashion centre. Article here:

Yeah - and fantastic music, from Gitanos (Roma, i.e. Gypsies). Never forget music. I was crazy about flamenco back then and still am. But hey - nowadays, you could easily stream it in Eugene...

FYI, there are plenty of cheap houses and apartments in Italy. Maybe not 1€, but you can get something decent for one person to live in for 50-100k. Possibly 30-50k, depending on exact location and needs. Not even ruins, either.

Malaguenas are quick and fun on piano. But not so easy!

Returning to the neighborhood of the thread, electing a Speaker is the first order of business in the House. Since the House is already organized, however, my guess is that McHenry can gavel in routine business as well if he chooses. Unlike last time, there IS a Speaker even if he is just pro tempore.

They're archetypes, representing two ways we might want to live out our retirement, as opposed to specific destination possibilities.

I had one of those once. But computers replaced it. That’s okay, type metal had a lot of lead in it…

I fantasize about Honolulu but I really don’t think I’d like it. Rock fever is a thing.

John Bear lived on the Big Island for about 18 months, back when he was still representing Heriot-Watt. He loved it there, but couldn't get anything done (like shipping boxes with courses in them) in a timely fashion.

I see that House Republicans have moved swiftly to resolve their current dilemma of an inability to keep a Speaker of the House. They kicked Nancy Pelosi out of her office and took the week off.

On the one hand, my default is to oppose giving special privileges to people who used to hold a particular position. Speaker is the title of a job, not a title of nobility. If you're not Speaker, you don't need a Speaker's office.

On the other hand, 100%, bringing that about simply through pettiness rather than purposefully is not the way I'd go about it.

Many flamenco forms are similar to the Blues - and jazz, of course - in this way: there's a set harmonic and time framework - and improvisation within it is a key element. My take: that's why there are so many great Roma (Gypsy) jazz guitarists and flamenco stars. As a group, they've been the greatest improvisers for hundreds of years. They've always instinctively know what the crowd likes - and play (and teach their youngsters) accordingly. This goes back a way. In early medieval times, a Persian king (Bahram V) was said to have employed 10,000 "luli" musicians in his court - i.e. members of tribes within the Romani spectrum.

More recently, back in the 1960s, there was a great guitarist, who had a business, selling guitar instruction tapes by mail. Your choice: blues or flamenco. I can see why. His name was Rolf Cahn.

Unlike school -or most work - making it up as you go along can be a good thing, in music.

The Speaker's office is a specific office. McCarthy was in the Speaker's office. Traditionally past speakers are given an office in the Capital. Pelosi was kicked out of her office in the Capital because McCarthy can no longer use the Speaker's office and he wanted the office that Pelosi was in. In a break with traditional, Pelosi won't have an office in the Capital despite there being other available offices in the Capital.

I never realized - Rolf's wife was Barbara Dane - folk and blues singer. I liked her work. Heavy-sounding voice, lots of feeling. Packed a great punch for her Blues work. Similar to Judy Roderick in that way.

Ever heard Judy's "Woman Blue" album? 1965. Still gets to me. Worth looking for. :)

People often blame the Democrats for failing to stop Republican car crashes, instead of blaming the Republicans for steering the car off the cliff. I think what's good for the country is for the Republican voters to finally realize they've elected a bunch of fools and vote them all out. That won't ever happen with Democrats stepping in to bail them out.

Yes, I should have been clear that Pelosi was in a special office in a coveted spot in the Capitol that is traditional for former Speakers to occupy, she was not still in the office normally used by the Speaker.

I am not sure it is a break with tradition, especially considering the unprecedented nature of this situation. I have seen some discussion that the office is reserved for the “last” speaker, which McCarthy now is. Is it driven by pettiness? Sure. Are they “technically” following the process? Maybe.

Has there ever been a situation where the Speakership changed and there were two previous Speakers still in the House? If so, did they both get “special” offices in that situation?
