    ABD

It appears that Robertstown has recently sent me an email advising me that I need to write a 30,000 to 50,000 word dissertation on original research. They say that the doctorate will be awarded on production of the title and short abstract of the dissertation. They have given me two years to complete the dissertation.

    Re: ABD

In your first post you say that you had received a doctorate. So where was the misunderstanding? They had not told you that a dissertation was required? How did you find out? Your first post was just unclear. Have you already discussed what the topic will be? Do you have an advisor assigned to work with you? What is the person's name and credentials?

    Thanks,

    Diploma Mill

Because Robertstown is considered by many to be a Diploma Mill I was wondering whether I should not complete the dissertation to make the doctorate more credible?

That won't help. That's just a waste of more time.

Also, you need to figure out what's going on.

First you said you had a doctorate from this so-called school. Then you said you'd get a doctorate basically for turning in a diss proposal, but that you were suposed to write a diss after the fact. Now it's write a diss to get the doc, or is it to add credibility as though it were optional?

You do not have a real doctorate, or one with credibility, now. Adding a dissertation, or something that outfit chooses to call a dissertation (what are the standards and process?), will make you feel righteous, but it won't change the outfit.

Maybe you should outline exactly what you have and have not done with this outfit, and we can then help you make sense of what to do next. As it stands, you have presented a somewhat contradictory account that is hard to understand.

But nothing you do can de-mill a mill.

    CONSUMER ADVISORY

WARNING! IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THE READER:

See, this is how it happens... or at least one of the ways. The user "langdell" (the thread-starter) is, at this writing (8/17/2004 at 11:07 AM PDT) a new member of these forums who, curiously, signed-up here not long after two other well-known college-degree-related forums out there on the Internet (online-college.info and collegehints.com) closed down. Unlike this forum, those two forums (or "fora," as some pluralize them) were havens for diploma mill operators and their customers.

The former of the two fora listed above (online-college.info) was completely unmoderated and its members routinely engaged in horrifically abusive and defamatory writings -- to the point that the web site's hosting provider killed the site for violation of its Terms of Service (TOS).

The latter of the two fora listed above (collegehints.com) was a bit better -- some say a lot better (though I'm certainly not one of them) -- and was at least moderated... though very poorly so. It, too (but, admittedly, to a lesser degree), was a place where diploma mill operators and their clients routinely posted; and it was voluntarily closed down by its owner because he realized that unless he moderated the forum himself (which he didn't have time to do) he would probably end-up getting sued because of the defamatory remarks made in his forum which his moderator just wouldn't make sure got deleted.

With the closure of those two fora, suddenly there are new members in this forum (like "langdell," for example) who are posting the same old pro-diploma mill garbage here as they did in those other forums... but in a somewhat more restrained manner, of course, because this forum really is adequately moderated and they know they can't be abusive here lest their posts be fairly quickly deleted and their usernames disabled (banned).

So the tactic they're using now is to come here and appear in their postings to be calm and reasonable (as opposed to hysterical and abusive, as they were in those other fora) so that people legitimately seeking information who visit this forum and read their posts, and who don't really know their way around the world of accredited and/or unaccredited-but-still-legitimate institutions versus completely unworthy institutions and downright diploma mills, will be confused and might just go to the web site of one of those unworthy institutions and/or flat-out diploma mills and be duped into signing-up with one of them. Or, if not that, then at least convinced to believe -- and, if so, wrongly so -- that they are actually legitimate and credible.

These are con artists, folks. Scammers. Flim-flam men (and women, in some cases), as previous generations (and some in this one) used to (still) call them. Their lying is (and has been for so long) so much a part of who and what they are that when you call them on their bad behavior and they reply with a straight-faced "what are you talking about," even they believe themselves.

Throughout this forum you will find occasional postings by knuckleheads like "langdell" and others who obviously think they're getting one over on everyone here. They're not... but only if you, the reader, are discerning and careful and bother to notice who around here actually knows what he/she is talking about, and who's just an idiot diploma mill shill.

Be careful about threads like this one. Obviously, many knowledgeable, caring folks who don't want you to be misled bothered to call "langdell" on his foolishness in this thread (and
the other duplicate thread he started here).

But, look... he's undeterred. He didn't even flinch... continuing to post his inanity in the hope against hope that you, the reader, will simply ignore all the other thoughtful posts here and in his other, duplicate thread which expose him and his illigitimate "Robertstown University" as the scamming, Liberian-government-approved, worthless diploma mill that it truly is.

It's a sight to behold, isn't it? A psychologist's dream. If it weren't so pathetic it would be almost entertaining. But the sad truth is that if you, the reader, don't stay on your toes and take the time to understand the issues, you could be taken for a serious ride by likes of "langdell" and others of his ilk.

BE CAREFUL. BE WARY. BE THOUGHTFUL. BE DISCERNING. DO RESEARCH. READ A LOT. ASK QUESTIONS. FIGURE OUT WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT (HERE AND ELSEWHERE) AND WHO'S JUST AN IDIOT (or, worse, a diploma mill shill, like "langdell" obviously is).

And, finally, good luck in your pursuit of a USDoE/CHEA agency accredited (or if unaccredited, then at least still objectively and verifiably legitimate, highly rigorous, historically reputable and thoroughly state-inspected and licensed) distance education!

    I have nothing to gain

I must add that I have nothing to gain in the above postings as I am just a student of Robertstown. I have no other affiliation!

And the all say that, too. Sorry I forgot to include that old, "we've never met before, have we" stage hypnotist trick in my listing of things to watch out for. My bad.

    Presentation of Evidence

I presented to Robertstown all the course completion certificates from the Open University based in the United kingdom and other colleges I had attended and they told me that I had enough credits to gain a doctorate however with the clarification ABD. so they awarded the degree on this strength. On my research on the net on Robertstown I found articles that were negative and positive about this institute.

I must add that I attended Durham University in the United Kingdom. In this country it is considered the third best university after Oxford and Cambridge. I compared the education at this institute to that provided by a university that is said not to be red-brick. The education at Durham turned out to be considerably more comprehension and intensive. This has left me with the impression that if a degree is not from a red-brick then it is worthless. However many don't think so!

Perhaps living in virtual reality makes fraud and crime ok with you rocco5, but the rest of live in the real world where neither are acceptable behavior.

This is you original post "I have been awarded a doctorate by Robertstown University. Until I produced my amateur radio certificate of 19 years they would only offer me a Masters degree. This obviously means that there is some quality assessment. The subject of the award is Information technology. this is not the only certificate I produced. I produced some IT soft skills certificates including Train the IT Trainer and Train the Trainer. I also produced some Open University course completion letter. This is in addition to all the other IT certificates I produced."

You are saying now that you don't have a "Doctorate"? How about a Master's? or even a bachelor's? What serious institution would award a PhD without any previous degree? How can you write a PhD dissertation without any background but few courses here and there?

If you are a realistic student, you would look first for a B.Sc based on present achievements. Some institutions can take your present work and can probably help you to get a B.Sc in short time. There are lots of threads that talk about how you can get this, once you get your B.Sc, then we can help you to get a PhD even without a master's. However, you need to learn to walk before you can run.

    Luck

    Overqualified for a Masters

I made a telephone enquiry to a UK university and told them that I had completed part of my MCSE and was studying towards a CCNA. The subject of the degree was Network Computing. On hearing of my previous experience they told me that I was overqualified for the course and on the strength of this they would not accept me on it.

    Re: Re: virtual wrong ?

Perhaps ALL virtual institutions are imaginary in ordinary reality; thus degrees from them are equally imaginary. The only problem is that so many accept the virtual as real....more a problem of confused ontology than immorality.

Hmmm once again you are attempting to confuse the issues with your own distorted reality. Harvard, U of Penn, NYU, WSU among others offer online classes and degrees. They are very real as their graduates are admitted to law school, med school etc. Degree Mills offer nothing except false reality and a slide into criminality. Admit it you are Dr. Evans and not his wife.
