That's why it is important to look at ALL taxation, not just income taxes. For example, Washington and Wyoming have no income tax, yet they rank just above the median in overall taxation.

Also, which things are being taxed? For example, states with high sales taxes are hurting lower-income residents more, since those people spend a greater proportion of their incomes on sales-taxable items.

(When I was in Massachusetts, they called it "Tax-a-chusetts," with many people living over the state line in New Hampshire. Sure, NH has a very low overall tax burden--49th--but Mass ranked in the lower half of the nation at 32nd. Hardly worth the hellish Route 2 commute, IMHO.)

Exactly. I notice you are a fellow Californian. Remember when the Terminator got in due to the recall of Davis? Terminator said no new taxes!!!! No new taxes! Bullshite! He raised the hell out of all sorts of taxes on things like fishing licenses, park and rec fees, you name it. Republicans do not always = no taxes, or no new taxes.

In California there are usually bond issues on the ballot. When these pass they get added to my real estate tax bill. I now pay $40 per year for the local community college rehabiliation and an extra 1/4% sales tax for local highway bonds. Two neighboring cities have propositions to implement ultility taxes. On Tuesdays elections there are state bond issues for over ten billion dollars (with no new taxes - ha).

Today Arnold proposed increasing sales tax by 1-1/2%

He said lawmakers will not be able to close the budget gap with cuts alone. He proposed a temporary 1.5 percent sales tax increase and other "revenue generators."

I hate this sloppy innumeracy - does he mean sales tax will go from 7.25% to 7.3406% (a 1.25% increase) or to 10.87% (an additional 1.25% increase)?

CA needs additional revenue - someones got to pay for all the bond issues that voters keep approving (although they voted down most of the one on the ballot in Tuesdays election).

    Word!

Americans have been conditioned to believe that greed is good and "liberalism" is an ugly word.

Yet it has always been the liberals who made the social changes necessary for most people.

8 hour work days? Blame it on the "liberals".
40 Hour work week? Its them liberals again.
Child Labor laws? Them libs at it again!
    Environmental health and safety?
    Workplace safety?
    Consumer protection?
    Safe food and drug laws?

It was all because some liberal somewhere decided to take action.

This is one of may favorite movie speeches-
The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.

    Greed is right.

    Greed works.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed -- you mark my words -- will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

    Upset and grossing under $250K

What's so funny to me about the $250K tax issue is that the people that are doing most of the complaining about Obamas tax plan DO NOT EVEN MAKE $250K.

I have listened to postal workers, K-12 teachers, construction workers, heating & cooling repairmen, nurses (RN & LPN), plummer (apprentice-non licensed), city employees and a variety of others who clearly DO NOT make $250K a year, so I wonder why they are really upset?

Reminds me of that Joe the Plumber guy.

The average earnings for the average household is about 50K. Quite honestly if you make 250K why would you worry about taxes anyway?

Rich - Rt. 2 still sucks. It's a dangerous road for a daily commute. However, not so bad for a Sunday morning motorcycle blast from Cambridge to Amherst.

    Gin Ichimaru,

I agree and a person that makes $250K has many options and loop-holes to decrease their tax liabilities.

I would love to be the guy pulling in $250K a year.

Because we know Obama is full of crap when he said our taxes won't be raised.

Someone is going to have to pay for all the social engineering programs coming down the pike, and the 2% of Americans who make >250K can't possibly foot that bill themselves.

Let's just brace ourselves for another Carter administration...only this time, possibly worse.

On the home front: Remember the economy when Carter took over? It got worse.

In the world arena: His push-over persona led to the Iranian hostage crisis. Ouch!

My prediction: In 2012, after the Republicans do some soul-searching, people will be ready for another change and look to the GOP. When people were ready for a change from the disastrous four years of Jimmy Carter, people found Ronald Reagan. This time, who will come to the rescue from the Republican party?

    Oh, it's going to be much worse. Carter was just a decent person who was in over his head. Obama knows exactly what he's doing, and ideas like this one should scare the Hell out of any American with half a brain;

    Of course, the general concept is not exactly new;

    I agree 100%.

    Mitt Romney.

The parallels between him and Reagan are pretty revealing; being politicians were second careers for them, both were governors of moderate (CA) or liberal (MA) states, both were initially dismissed as true conservatives, both lost their first attempts at nomination (Reagan twice - 1968 and 1976) and both look/looked at politics as public service rather than an entrenched career.

It also doesn't hurt that he has impeccable credentials, he and his wife look like Ken & Barbie, have the perfect family, have no skeletons whatsoever, and are genuinely nice people (I've met both).

Thanks to Daddy Bush and greedy corporate America our country has been run into the ground.

Our country went from an excess surplus of $$$ to a recession that's getting worse by the day.

Come on its Obama’s turn to give it a try to make things better in the USA, he can't do a worse job than Uncle Bush has already done.

As a patriotic American I sincerely want him to prove me wrong, but as a realist, I have very little faith he will do so.

You Wanna Forget Don't You? No Way

Under Uncle Bushes watch we have seen record home foreclosures, record profit losses, job losses (GM, Ford and Chrysler to name a few), loss of military personnel due to Iraq conflict and lets not forget the record unemployment rates that were reported just today.

Tell me what American that has lost so much can afford to forget this in four years?

The Americans who are going to lose even more by 2012.

Bruce, let us think positive. If we could somehow get the Republicans and the Democrates to meet somewhere in the MIDDLE and come to some sort of MUTUAL AGREEMENT on what to do in order to turn the USA around. You and I will be better off in the long run.

We have had so many economic hardships here in America, we need a break and we need that break to last more than a couple of weeks or months.

I for one am very nervous at the thought that I might be unable to retire. I do not want to be 90 years old and be put into a situation were I would have to compete for a "Greaters" job at Wal-Mart with a bunch of other 90 year old applicants.

The thought of working until I fall over and die is a very scary thought and that's why I am hoping that something positive happens to the economy in the very near future (next 2-3 years).
