It would be 2-0 if the victorious team scored a safety (tackled the opposing ball carrier in their own end zone).

If no one scores in overtime, couldn't a game end as a 0-0 tie?

I'm not sure if that's allowed. But it is an interesting question.

In a regular season NFL game, there is only one overtime period so yes, a game could end as a 0-0 tie.

What I meant to ask is: what is the lowest winning score possible in an NFL game?

To my surprise (I just did look it up) Bruce's answer is correct.

But what I had in mind was the official forfeit score, if one team refuses to play, which I would have bet heavily (and lost) was 1-0 . . . but it turns out that it is 2-0. (I still wonder if it may have once been 1-0, because I was so sure.)

So the 'bar bet' becomes: "How can an NFL game end with a 2-0 score if neither team scores a safety?"

(The forfeit score in baseball, as we all know, is 9-0, and I'm sure of that.)

Hi boys - The bookies have set the spread at 20 points. Will you take the Ravens and 20 points? The Ravens are 4 and 7. They can't win the game but can they even beat the spread? I say no. It will be another big (3 touchdowns) win for the Pats. It's Monday Night Football boys. C'ya Tuesday morning.

Well, that was a close one!!

In addition to being an extremely good team, it also seems the Patriots have a horseshoe stuck up their posterior. I was almost certain they were going down last night!!

Horsheshoe indeed. But the business of calling last-microsecond time-outs before the snap seems to backfire more often than it has a positive effect. Two important-game losses this week because of this.

It was an extremely long, difficult day for me and so I went to bed after the end of the third quarter (with the score tied at 17) and I was certain that the Pats would lose. There were a couple of passes dropped early in the game by the Pats but I think they were more than a little bit lucky to win this one. Next is the Steelers.

Unless Belichick makes some serious adjustments and the players refuse to get pushed around again, I think the Steelers game will be their Waterloo. I'll be there (and also the Jets game), and I would hate to say I was at THE game of 2007.........

On one level the issue is simple: If the Patriots can contain Willie Parker and force Ben RoethmoronIcanridewithoutahelmetmoronlisberger to throw the ball then the Patriots will win. Obviously this becomes a question of who controls the line of scrimmage. For what it's worth, the Pats have the home field advantage. It has been cold around here recently (19 degrees when I woke up today) and the forecast is for 35 degrees on Sunday (getting colder as the game continues). This shouldn't be an advantage for either team. After the last two games it would be silly to predict a blowout so I'm only going to predict that the Pats will win by 14 points.

The Las Vegas bookmakers must reallyreally hate the Patriots. The Pats remain undefeated AND beat the spread. Next weeks it's the Jets. Anybody want to make a friendly wager? HA! It's just a joke!

I was at the Steelers game, and it was crazy; lots of fights and so many drunks wandering the concourses, it looked like Dawn of the Dead.

I think it's official folks; if the Patriots didn't lose today, they're not going to.

Belichick showed mercy on the Steelers; the score could have been more ugly than it was. I hope Bob Kraft is having the NBA scoreboard installed for the Jets game as I'm typing this.

Just so that you all know, I don't really bet on games. Once upon a time I worked in a place where there was "a card" that you could buy and I regularly bought in. But that's small change. It just creates a topic of conversation for a group of people who may have nothing else in common. I haven't bet on a game in quite some time.

The line is important as it gives an assessment of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the opponents. However, this assessment actually means something. You can listen to the yahoos on NFL Today or any of the other TV shows. You can listen to the local sports-talk radio show. But understand, both of those shows are about ENTERTAINMENT. If their predictions are wrong then they shrug their shoulders and make a joke to the camera/microphone and everything is OK. However, the bookies actually live and die by their predictions. Millions of dollars flow through their hands every week and you have just got to know that they are smart and they are very, very serious about their predictions. If they're not good at it then they don't last long. If you find a betting operation that is winning then it's because they're smart and they do all the right research. Watch the line as the week progresses. I predict it will be in excess of 30 points by gametime.

Agreed. I know some people in the Caribbean who work for bookies. That business is all business.

My understanding is that the book makers aren't really sticking their neck out that far. If more people are betting on team A than team B they just adjust the spread in favor of team A until the bets for team B can cover the team A bets.
