...and the 49ers haven't scored a touchdown in eleven years. Well, actually eleven quarters. Doesn't Brady have a brother or a cousin somewhere looking for work?

Well, you can relax a bit Bill; the Magic (just barely) handed them their first loss. With Garnett, Allen and Pierce playing almost max minutes every game, I can't see the Celtics keeping it up for the whole season.

Yeah, I know it's a football thread, but I live in San Antonio - we do pro basketball (and very well, I may add).

Despite the great start that the Celtics have made I'd choose the Spurs to win it all (if I had to choose right now).

So, how old is this thread and how are the Patriots doing now?

Well Ted, the thread is two weeks old and the Patriots remain undefeated. If you'll come back to this thread on February 4th I'll be able to tell you that the season is over and the Patriots went undefeated.

The scary thing is that you might be right. The way that they are playing right now, they look unstoppable.

Of course, it's awfully hard to go an entire season undefeated, as any number of college football teams can tell you. I still expect the Patriots to stumble at least once. But as long as it doesn't happen in the playoffs, they will win the Superbowl.

I really want the Patriots to lose, tell you the truth. I used to support them, but now that they have Randy Moss, I hate them. (Kinda like T.O. in Dallas.) Both of those players are extremely talented, even more self-absorbed and egotistical, and will readily tear a team apart if they aren't kept satisfied. And because they are so talented, they can just walk away from the damage they cause and make even more money somewhere else.

I'm almost unwilling to watch pro football this year, I'm so pissed off about that. (My own 49'ers and Raiders suckiness has nothing to do with it. :D )

It is certainly possible that the Pats will lose a regular season game. I think that their last game (NY Giants) is a possible loss. If it goes the way I suspect it will, the Pats will be undefeated going into their last game of the regular season. Why not give some of the regulars a bit of extra rest? Let the bench players play most of the game. If you lose it doesn't effect anything. But if the regulars play most of the game it will end the same as all the others. As for Randy Moss, he's been a model citizen all year. No problems of any description. He's happy because he's playing on a winning team that can showcase his talents. He'll have some huge records under his belt by the time this season ends. It will be interesting to see what happens when it comes time to renegotiate his contract. You might see some nastiness then but it's also possible that he might realize that keeping himself (and his mouth) in line is the better course of action when it comes to him finishing out his career.

The rumor is that McNabb won't play on Sunday. Can the bookmakers really take bets with a 30 point line? The inside story is that some of the larger bookmakers are considering de-listing the Pats games because they're losing too much money. The Pats opponents can't even cover the spread. So that's what I was referring to when I asked, "How big can the spread get before it's just silly?" What will the spread be when the Pats play Miami?
50 points? At that point what you're really betting on is how far into the game will Brady stay in. Will they even let him start the second half? It's a good thing I don't have any money or else I'd really have to make a few bets.

Belichick isn't going to bench his starters in the Giants game until he has at least a 3 touchdown lead. This season is all about revenge and validation after SpyGate, and there's no way Belichick isn't going full-bore for 19-0.

John: I've tried to find out, without success, how much (if any) was bet on Stanford versus USC, which I seem to recall was about a 40 point spread. Imagine the odds on betting on Stanford to win the game (which of course they did).

"The Play" -- 25th anniversary, tomorrow

For six thoroughly enjoyable minutes, revisit "The Play" -- the five-lateral final play in which Cal beat Stanford in the 1982 Big Game. The pleasure, of course, comes from knowing what's going to happen . . . and also of announcer Joe Starkey absolutely going nuts at the very end.

I just saw that on ESPN Classic; apparently all Stanford record books still list that game as a 20-19 victory.

I suspect that you're right. Plus, everything I've heard from the players suggests that they would like nothing better than to slash and burn their way through the rest of the season (and post season). I was just trying to come up with a scenario where the Pats might lose. How silly of me.

I'm actually going to be at the Jets game (in Foxborough), and Bob Kraft had better invest in an NBA scoreboard before that carnage is over.

That is a HUGE ticket! The best part is the subplot. It may not even be the subplot. It may be the plot.

It's not the Pats v. the Jets. It's Belichick v. Mangini.

I'll be in my living room watching you on TV, Bruce. Wave to me. ;)

You betcha. I knew I read your posts for a reason. :) Sorry to keep throwing an NBA slant into this, but I can't help it.

Nudging this back to the NFL, it seems like even Tank agrees with you:

I've heard that. That would be the same Stanford whose mens swimming coach earlier this year vindictively omitted five swimmers from the schools media record book because he was annoyed at them. http://tiny.cc/tkDBY

How many more chances do the Patriots have to screw up a (so far) perfect regular season? :D

Six more regular season games until perfection. :D

Speaking of perfection, has any city ever won a Superbowl and a World Series in the same year? What about a Superbowl, World Series and an NBA title?

If it isn't the Boston beans, then it must be the power of prayer. Damn Catholics all saying their 'Hail Marys' all at once has created a probability warp or something...

Are there any gambling casinos in Boston?
