Forgive my inexperience, but isn't Nova Southeastern University a B&M school that offers DL programs?

To compare it to Northcentral University is comparing apples to oranges.

The "my" versus "yours" was meant to mean the difference between a DL, non-AACSB PhD versus a B&M, AACSB PhD.

The goal of a person earning such a degree is very important. A degree from NCU will probably not get you what you want, but a degree from NCU will get me what I want.

I am actually jealous that you get to work full-time on your degree. A guy in my office recently quit to work full-time on a PhD in physics. He is about my age but doesn’t have a wife or kids.

It is conceivable that there are different opinions on this matter. I also think you are at least partially incorrect and perhaps totally incorrect in your assessment.

Over the years, my opinion of "online" for-profit schools has been deteriorating to the point that I no longer think they are a reputable alternative to education.

    Again, just my opinion.

Yes, but I'm a trained observer in the programs you referenced.

I actually graduated from an external DBA from USQ and facing the limitations of my degree in terms of publications. I was required to publish only one publication when the market requires more than this, I'm in the process of getting a post doc position to build on my publications in order to compete.

The issue of external degree was never really raised as an issue but the lack of publications in my case. I still get to work as a lecturer but not able to get a promotion unless I land a tenure track so I need the "push" of a post doc to accumulate publications.

I still get my "pay" raise so the degree worked some how for me but I'm just mentioning the limitations of degrees with no publication requirements.

OK, this is getting confusing. I'm looking for the best degree I can get in DL and 99 replies later I'm going back and forth on the basics.

I am very willing to go spend a week here and two weeks there at a B&M if it means a more respected degree. I can't, however, go spend a month at a time in Europe.

Is NSU a B&M that offers a DL PhD? Is that a better degree than Touro, NCU, and other non-B&M schools?

And still...which NSU are we talking about....there are 6. Would someone please spell out the acronym so I know which site to look into?

    Any help is appreciated.

Yes, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a good if not great nontraditional school.

    Hi,

I think that you should look for a tested product. Nova and Argosy have DL options and have plenty of graduates working in academia.

Do a goole search and you willl find plenty of Argorsy and NSU graduates working full time in Academia.

Some of the foreign options have also good precense in the US in terms of graduates teaching full time.

I located many graduates from schools like UNISA teaching full time in the US.

NCU and Touro have little presence in academia at the present so I would consider them high risk.

If you want to minimize your risk, I would stick to Nova or Argosy.

Actually, your comment that you "once saw" an above average presentation lends credence to the overall low quality of the others. You did NOT say "I routinely see".

I teach in one of those program (holding my nose) and the bar is set pretty low. Some individuals will do a good job - but most are quite willing (and allowed) to slide by.

I love the way this is thrown out - most faculty "consulting" is a business card and perhaps a vanity web site - same with "hitting the lecture circuit". ;)

NSU on this forum generally refers to Nova Southeastern University.

If you want a doctorate to enter academia, then you stand a much better chance with a degree from a traditional, B&M, AACSB accredited university.

But, if you want a degree to teach as an adjunct, get a pay raise, or consult, then a doctorate from NCU will do just fine. It’s not that there is anything wrong with a degree from NCU, but a doctorate from NCU doesn’t have a proven track record for breaking into academia. Hopefully someday this will change.

Congratulations on your degree. What was your opion of this external DBA program? I've heard very good things about the University of Southern Queensland!

    Interesting.

When I hear consult, I think of the over-priced consultants that my office sometimes hires.

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has offered the D.B.A. and the D.I.B.A. (i.e., International) for a long while, but did not offer the Ph.D. BA. However, I see there is some reference to Ph.D. BA but the web page doesn't exist. In any event, there is some controversy going about whether the D.B.A. and Ph.D. are equivalent training for teaching in a business school. Some D.B.A. programs have more of an applied focus while the Ph.D. has long be the degree attained after theoretical contributions. Still, in many traditional programs there is no noticeable difference between the training for the D.B.A. and the Ph.D. BA.

That said, you should probably apply to NSU simply because it is one of the most respected nontraditional doctoral programs. Personally, I looked at NSU but chose Touro because of the professors I was going to be working with and that I wanted to earn the Ph.D. designation. NCU was not around yet but I think still would have chosen Touro over NCU.

There are no easy answers to your questions; I recommend that you look at all these programs and there are others as well. For example, a friend of mine just graduated from Fielding and had a tremendous experience, and is getting plenty of adjunct work.

I think you are in Canada right?

Most Canadian DBA students are either full time faculty at small Universities or staff at Universties.

The program is in the process of getting AACSB accreditation that would be good in terms of acceptability in north america.

The program is not designed for academics but for practicioners although most of the students are academics.

I think that any part time program would suffer from the same problem that is that students graduate with little publications compared to full time students.

Australian schools in general have respect in Canada so the acceptability is not an issue. However, some schools don't like the idea that doctorate programs in Australia are 3 or 2 year full time programs while in Canada they are 3 to 5 years full time programs so some schools penalize you with one year when it comes to pay compared with Canadian Phds.

No. Actually, that's not what the comment said or meant; the poster to which I was responding was exaggerating in a domain in which they had a lesser degree of direct knowledge.

I live in Ontario. Australian universities are very well accepted in Canada. I am currently pursuing my PhD at Aston Business School in the UK. When I was looking to pursue a doctorate, Australia was on the shortlist, but I chose the UK for the simple reason of travel for my residentials. I am ABD, and will (hopefully) be finished in 12-24 months.

How much was Aston per year?

One of the reason for chosing USQ is that it was within my budget of 3.5K a year that was given to me by the University where I work. It took me about 6 years part time so we are talking about 20K canadian total.

Nova was my first choice but far too expensive for my budget. My second choice was Argosy but ruled out for the same reason.

Is the university you are attending now AACSB?

Nova and Argosy are not AACSB. I would think that given the choice, a person would choose an AACSB accredited university rather than a non-AACSB accredited university.

Aside from being RA, Nova is only accredited by IACBE. This is probably a far cry from AACSB. NCU is a candidate for ACBSP which I think is better than IACBE.

USQ is applying for AACSB accreditation but not accredited yet.

Nova is not AACSB accredited but at the time there was no options for external research at AACSB accredited institutions.

Now we have few and the number will increase with the time.

NCU was not accredited when I applied to USQ. NCU was an option since it was really cheap at the time (less than 10K) and it had good chances for RA accreditation but decided not to take chances.
