Indeed. According to BG15, 307, Dr. J has an honorary doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, bestowed at the same time as his bachelor's in leadership and management.

 

Actually, it was a monniker put on him by others. Also, Erving never pretended to be a doctorate holder, as the subject of this thread did. Doctor J., Dr. Hook, Dr. John, and Doc Severinson never tried to fool anyone. I bet "Tiy-E" continues to try, though. His life's work is built upon that illusion.

 

Which he completed via DL, IIRC.

 

I had thought he did his undergrad work at Michigan State. But maybe I'm wrong. Was he one of these wunderkinds that got hired away by the pros after his sophamore year or something?

 

He did turn pro after college two seasons, but those seasons were at UMass-Amherst.

Oh, dear! The two-year wunderkind from Mich State that I was thinking of was Earvin "Magic" Johnson. He too is an honorary doc, according to Bears' Guide.
