Despite Trump's saying how it's important to him to balance the budget. History would indicate otherwise.

Donald Trump Built a National Debt So Big (Even Before the Pandemic) That It’ll Weigh Down the Economy for Years
    quote:
One of President Donald Trump’s lesser known but profoundly damaging legacies will be the explosive rise in the national debt that occurred on his watch. The financial burden that he’s inflicted on our government will wreak havoc for decades, saddling our kids and grandkids with debt.

The national debt has risen by almost $7.8 trillion during Trump’s time in office. That’s nearly twice as much as what Americans owe on student loans, car loans, credit cards and every other type of debt other than mortgages, combined, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It amounts to about $23,500 in new federal debt for every person in the country.

Because the Orange Godzilla is wreaking havoc on a global scale, pushing aside just about anything else.

Higher education is threatened but not by Trump. The do-nothing administrators have prioritized retention and DEI over existential threats like AI.

You're both right. Higher education as an industry has been woefully slow to address demographic and technological changes, but it certainly doesn't help when DeSantis is throwing nonsense re-accreditation requirements at Florida public universities, JD Vance is saying that professors are the enemy, and the Trump administration is freezing grant funding even though it's been appropriated by Congress.

Lol ya, everything bad must be DEI.

American Principles Project sent a letter Tuesday to the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions commending nominee Linda McMahon’s “strong background and the necessary qualifications to lead and improve the Department of Education.” The letter, signed by Moms for Liberty, Claremont Institute, Family Research Council and Eagle Forum, warned that the department “desperately needs a complete overhaul after years of incompetence, hyper-partisanship, and a purposeful anti-Christian agenda.”
“All that experience will serve her well at the Department of Education, which has gone off the rails under the Democrats’ rule,” the letter said of McMahon. “The Biden-Harris administration has used the Department of Education not to educate America’s children — who are steadily falling behind — but instead to push their radical cultural agenda on America’s kids and to punish anyone who dares stand in their way. Kids today are taught to hate their country, divide themselves by race, and embrace a pervasive gender ideology.”

In today's paper there's a story about a lithium processing plant that was to go up in the neighborhood next to mine. Lots of jobs, lots of spending. But their $850 million loan from the federal government just got nixed, so the company is going belly-up and the project is cancelled.

I just hope those people affected remember who did it.

I can't help but wonder, though, if it's such a great plan why it needs federal funding. We have the world's largest financial sector, and they do this sort of thing. Did the people with actual skin in the game pass on it?

Ah, and what about that? I am a very happy owner of a used Nissan LEAF but I doubt very many people would have been able or willing to buy it new without significant government subsidies. Likewise with charging infrastructure. Elon Musk, or Tesla itself anyway, claims its Supercharger Network is profitable but real numbers are hard to come by. I doubt it's true unless you crank in all that subsidy money that's going away under Trump.

All of our zero carbon and renewable energy policies survive only with hefty government assistance. There should be no doubt about this.

It is a fair question whether the federal government should be spending taxpayer dollars in this way in the face of gigantic deficits and a growing debt.

Actually, I suspect that the Supercharger Network isn't profitable even if you count the subsidies. Musk fired the entire Supercharger team last year and announced that further expansion would be limited. He knows even if Tesla's balance sheet is a bit cagey on the subject.

Also, I'm treating the Supercharger Network as if it were a stand alone business unit. That's not really fair. The driving purpose behind the Network is to stimulate sales of Tesla E/Vs. Does it? Anecdotal evidence suggests that it does but now that Tesla is opening it to non-Tesla vehicles, the "loss leader" aspect begins to tarnish.
