Switzerland is set to hold a vote on measures designed to limit immigration to stop the population hitting 10 million before 2050, after enough signatures were deposited Wednesday.

Under Switzerland's direct democracy system, citizens can trigger popular votes by collecting 100,000 valid signatures within 18 months.

The hard right Swiss People's Party (SVP) submitted 114,600 signatures to the Federal Chancellery in Bern on Wednesday -- collected in half the time.

"Mass immigration continues its frantic course... with devastating consequences for our small country," said the SVP, which is the biggest party in the wealthy Alpine nation.

Adopting the initiative "is urgent to protect our unique landscape, our high quality of life, our above-average prosperity and for a secure, free future for us and our children".

The initiative proposes to modify the Swiss constitution, stipulating that "the permanent resident population of Switzerland must not exceed 10 million people before the year 2050".

The permanent resident population would include Swiss nationals living in the country and foreigners with either a residence permit valid for at least one year, or staying in the country for at least 12 months.

If these measures are not enough, Switzerland would ultimately have to terminate the agreement on the free movement of people with the EU.

Its new leader, 43-year-old hill farmer Marcel Dettling, is considered on the harder wing of the party on immigration.

"Today, too many foreigners are arriving, and not the right ones. We need controlled immigration that benefits our country and our population," he said after the signatures were deposited.

I suppose he wants to build a WALL along the border and wants Italy, France, Germany, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein to pay for it. And he'll probably deploy AIRBOATS on the Rhine.

Does Marcel have any pending indictments? No? OK - is Viktor Orbán secretly financing his campaign? ...Aw. c'mon.

Switzerland is not an EU member state but it is part of the Schengen Area. I don't know it they've agreed to freedom of settlement.

    It looks like they have.

"Through a range of bilateral agreements, the EU has closer ties with Switzerland than with any other country outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Switzerland has been associated with several EU policies relating to:

As part of the bilateral agreement, Switzerland and the EU concluded a deal on the free movement of people. This gives citizens on each side the right to live and work in the EU or Switzerland, provided they have a job or other source of income. (emphasis mine - J.)
    • The EU's research and mobility programmes. "
    "
The EU's economic and trade relations with Switzerland are governed by the free trade agreement of 1972, and by the Bilateral agreements of 1999. These agreements give Switzerland direct access to key sectors of the EU's internal market, including:

And lots more. From here: ttps://www.eeas.europa.eu/switzerland/european-union-and-switzerland_en?s=180#:

That's stupid and apples to oranges. These "Ethiopians" are Jews, Beta Israel. They have followed the Torah and Jewish law for thousands of years, just like Spanish Jews, Russian Jews and German jews. We were spread across the globe. Jews come in all races and our people have had contact with them off and on forever. They had a right of return like all Jews do and we're never migrants.

You are confusing Ethiopian Jews with Ethiopian workers who are not Jews.
The recent riots they had are between law-abiding Israeli citizens of Ethiopian origin and undocumented Ethiopians who are not of Jewish origin.
African immigration to Israel is the international movement to Israel from Africa of people that are not natives or do not possess Israeli citizenship in order to settle or reside there.
The African refugee population in Israel is composed primarily of Sudan and Eritrean refugees migrating to Israel through the Desert in Sinai. Israeli policy concerning these refugees has evolved from a policy of neutrality to a policy of deterrence. Many of the migrants seek asylum status under UN statues.

Strictly from a political perspective, (1) if he does have the power and is inclined to use it, he should do so; (2) if he doesn't have the power he should say so and blame the Republicans; but (3) if he's not sure yet whether he can do it or not then this sort of hemming and hawing makes him look indecisive and that the Republicans are defining the issues, and he should just have said nothing.

Recent immigrants think Canada's immigration targets are too high, prefer Tories to Liberals: poll

Of the 2,000 respondents who immigrated within the past decade, 42 per cent say the Liberals' new immigration plans are too permissive

Among people who immigrated to Canada in the last decade, more think Canada’s latest immigration targets will bring in too many people, a newly released Leger poll suggests, while fewer recent newcomers think the plan will bring in the right amount of people or not enough.

    https://archive.is/SYRGM

    This study shows that…
    • 24% of newcomers to Canada find themselves agreeing most with the Conservative Party of Canada, while 22% say that they agree most with the Liberal Party of Canada.
    • Among newcomers, 38% do not know which party they align with the most.

The question is who is immigrating?
Are those migrants who will be beneficial to Canadian economy and security, well intentioned to become part of Canadian society or Jihadists who will work toward changing Canada and turning it in to Jihadist ground to promote MB etc. Or organized gangs and cortels willing to expend their markets and activities such as human trafficing and drug sales etc.
Will migrants be law abiding or increase criminal troubles etc? It's probably a mix, so let's hope it's more of the law abiding, and positively motivated migrants and less or no the the others mentioned.

They're not migrants. they're immigrants. Immigrants formally apply, get checked out - education, work background, language and other skills. etc. A decision is made, individually. They get permission - THEN they come. Migrants just show up on the doorstep.

We have about 1,775,000 Muslims in Canada today. That's significant, almost 5% of the population. Overall - a peaceful, law-abiding and hard-working group. Many Muslims came here, not because they were economically deprived - e.g Syrians who fled because of war. Quite a few had sufficient resources to establish successful businesses here.

I've learned to say "Marhaban bikum fi Kanada" - Welcome to Canada. And when I say it, I mean it. :)

Interestingly, the only other ones I've heard make that distinction are anti-[im]migrant MAGAs, who I know full well you do not otherwise resemble.

Bill Maher got me started on the distinction, Steve. He deliberately conflated the two groups because he knew so many US Neanderthals hated migrants. I felt he did it just to make Canada look ridiculous. Apparently, that's Mr. Trudeau's job, not his. :)

So I've been acutely conscious of the difference ever since. Then @Lerner used the "m" word and I seized on it right away. You know how I get. :)

Migrants - yes we have some. I certainly don't hate them. How do you hate truly desperate people, who have risked their lives? Many have crossed the US Southern border and are now crossing the Northern border. We know where they usually head for and officials are usually there. Yes, they are detained - under humane conditions, or so we're led to believe, by our journalists and our Government. If they are sick or injured (often frostbite etc.) they get medical treatment and hospital care. They get questioned, etc. and refugee hearings etc. are scheduled. The point is to weed out suspected wrongos and give the rest all the help in settling that other newcomers are eligible for. So far, it seems to be working.

No family separation, no airboats or buoys.

The American Association of Neanderthals just called. They say I'm making them look bad, by conflating their group with MAGA.
    So I'm drafting a formal apology. :)

That ugly description alone discredits your source (whatever it is) completely.

    (1) Anti-Semitic
    (2) Fear-mongering and fictional.

Chinese-Communist-Party-Phobia is very easy to stoke. And @Lerner you obviously fell for it.

I’ve lived in the multicultural cities of Toronto and Mississauga for over two decades prior to moving to Poland. This summer, I am planning to visit my mom, who still lives in Canada. I’ve always enjoyed some aspects of Canadian multiculturalism, if one simply means interaction with other cultures and establishing connections with people from various parts of the world. This was part of my valuable Canadian schooling experience. Warsaw (Poland) also provides plenty of opportunities for such encounters with its large cultural variety and presence. However, I am not happy about multiculturalism as a vehicle for top-down societal transformation through mass immigration. That’s where I depart from some contributors to this forum.

I think the city of Brampton, Ontario represents a model of multicultural (and in some cases, monocultural Indian) Canada. This conservative-biased yet insightful video was released just a few days ago. Most of the newcomers from India are law-abiding people, but there is still something culturally amiss about a Canadian city being almost indistinguishable from a city in India. Interestingly enough, the Indian newcomers recognize this oddity as well, if you watch the conversations. Also, look at the conditions of the “privileged whites” left in Brampton. They are now standing at 19 percent of the city population and rapidly decreasing in number. Could this be the future of Canadian multiculturalism?
