would be an interesting one. If accreditable, it would be the first DETC DMin, I believe.

They are having a tuition fee increase effective February 2, 2009. Undergrad from $140.00/credit to $195.00, grad from $240.00 to $295.00 (Source). It's a sign that they are either receiving high enrollment, they have been assured accreditation, or both.

A similar structure to Columbia Southern University. http://www.columbiasouthern.edu/financial/index.asp

There is however, in the administration of Columbia Southern a person that was president at one time at California Southern (fka SCUPS). And you can notice the similarity of the name, of course this is just me speculating of a possible connection with both schools. I guess more sharp research is needed. Perhaps you can help?

I've attended language workshops that had Dr. Nunan and Dr. Ellis as speakers/trainers, great instrcutors and two of the world's most famous TESOL scholars. If this program is indeed taught by these faculty, this would put it up there with the country's top TESOL graduate programs, a major feat for a non-RA school.

Anaheim U's web site indicates they have online film programs, yet I can't find a film program listed anywhere on the site.

$375 per credit hour for a DETC accredited MBA is pretty steep.

I agree, but to their credit they are giving a 50% discount for those that enroll by March 31, 2009.

Advice please, guys. I'm interested in California Southern's PsyD program, please give me your thoughts on whether They will make DETC accreditation this time? My choices are between them and Northcentral, but I'd rather go to CSU because I'll be saving money and I don't want to deal with a dissertation.

I don't follow this stuf very closely so I couldn't begin to guess at their chances (btw, no one else really knows either) but here's a couple of things I can almost guarantee: if they become accredited the price will go up and the dissertation/final project will become mandatory.

No one can tell you when a school will be accredited, you just will have to take a chance like many did when NCU was not accredited, they got a cheap degree and accredited when the got HLC accreditation. ;)

CSU has been persistent and it is possibility, if they have follow all the recommendations in previous attempt, they might get it.

And why not, University of Atlanta got it, Columbia Southern University got it, American Sentinel University got it, just to name a few, these universities at one time had an obscure episode in history of accreditation.

    Best of luck.

I think they will eventually. Cal Southern students will have to defend their project ( which I think is similar to a dissertation ). Are you interested in licensure outside of California?

Hi raristud, at this time, I don't have plans to relocate out of California. But, of course, I would rather have that option than not have it. I thought that if California Southern became accredited that I could become licensed in any state. Is that assumption wrong?

I'm interested in Cal Southern because my goal is not to teach at a college or university. I just want to have my own private practice, so I see no need for the PHD. PsyD would be just fine.

Aside from accreditation being up in the air, is there any reason any one on here would not recommend this school for me?

Depends with reservation. If you get licensed in California, I believe there is a way for you to get licensed in other states. "ASPPB's CPQ program is designed to facilitate mobility for licensed doctoral psychologists.

ASPPB issues a Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology (CPQ) to psychologists licensed in the U.S. and Canada who meet standards of educational preparation, supervised experience, and examination performance, and who have practiced a minimum of five years and have no history of disciplinary action. "

"It is important to note that the CPQ does not constitute a license to practice. It is a mechanism to facilitate the granting of a license to practice in a second or subsequent jurisdiction. Once a psychology board agrees to recognize the CPQ, it has agreed to accept the CPQ holders' educational preparation, supervised experience, and examination performance for licensure. A jurisdiction may require a CPQ holder to pass local requirements such as a jurisprudence exam (e.g. local mental health law), training on abuse reporting, or a personal interview.

    http://www.asppb.org/mobility/cpq/what.aspx

Now if you earn a detc calsouthern degree and you hold no licensure, you may experience difficulty in meeting educational requirements outside the state of California. In my opinion, the majority of state psychology boards want applicants to have a regionally accredited degree. So I recommend that you talk with your state psychology board and research all available routes to licensure. You may also look at state reciprocity. I don't know if the California psychology licensure has reciprocity with other states. Check it out. If your intention is to licensure yourself in California, I say go for the Psy.D degree. Just wait until calsouthern is accredited. California Coast offers a masters degree in psychology. You could study at CCU and transfer your credits to NorthCentral University. NCU has an articulation agreement with CCU. These are options to keep in mind. The Ph.D at Northcentral and the Psy.D at CalSouthern are practitioner oriented.

raristud, thanks for all the answers. To raristud and anyone else, am I correct in assuming that a DETC accreditation is easier to gain than a regional one?

I really hope Southern California is successful this time. They've already struck out once. How many times can a college that claims they are a quality one fail at a DETC accreditation if it isn't nearly as hard/involved as a regional one? If they aren't successful this time, I won't be attending their PsyD program.

According to the FAQ on the DETC website, DETC has more stringent standards than RA for distance eduaction:

    http://detc.org/frequentlyQust.html

    Q. Is DETC accreditation equal to “regional” accreditation?
    A. In every measurable way, yes! DETC accreditation is just as valid as any regional accreditation, and the Secretary of Education has officially recognized DETC since 1959 and by the Council for Higher Education and its predecessors since 1975. We meet the precisely same standards as do the regionals, and we would hasten to add we have vastly more experience and tougher, more stringent standards for distance learning than any other agency in the U.S. Distance learning is our only business.
