I case anyone is curious, I emailed the History dept. chair with a question regarding the book selection for the Railroad History course. If I hear back anything this week, I'll post what books they are using for the course. They aren't yet listed in the bookstore.

Thanks so much for the information! I have emailed her, so we will see how that goes. Thanks again!

Actually I think Katherine is the only person there who knows what's going on concerning DL. Contact admissions and you'll get everything from "I don't think we have online students" to "you'll need to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor, go to their office and then get..." you get the point. Katherine was great though.

She is a librarian, which makes her even cooler in my book. :)

What? That school reminds me of a Shakespeare play, the only characters who know what the heck is going on are the working class and/or bit part players.

Again, thank you for the info. I am registered and ready to start this summer! To answer the original thread's question, I am taking two English courses, one is on creative non fiction writing and the other one is Advanced Creative Writing. I love the fact that it is a one month course! I hope everyone does well this upcoming semester.

Railroad History book list and additional info

Here are the books for the Railroading History course. I've been told that it's no longer cross listed with the Business dept. so it will definitely will have more of a historical focus. It's a 10 week course with lots of reading. The assignments include 5 question weekly quizzes on the reading, 4-5 five paragraph essays with follow-up discussion, and some sort of a take home final. I asked if the due dates are announced ahead of time on the syllabus or if they come up randomly through out the course like some mentioned is the case in other courses.

Because of the tuition discount, I'm debating on how many courses to take. I need 6 credits of polysci for sure, so I'm looking at World Politics and Economic Development of Latin America. Both are a month long, AND at the same time. For those who have taken these one month summer courses at WNMU, how intense are they?

I'm also considering the railroad course as well, which would also overlap those two. Of course, I'm out of school for the summer, so I should have time :)

To be honest, I'm a bit bummed because I REALLY wanted to take the History of Religion course at APU, but it doesn't fall at a good time for me to take it. I was hoping it would start in May and go through June, so I could take it before the WNMU courses, but it didn't happen that way.

Speaking of May, why does WNMU wait until June/July to start Summer courses?

Oh, and for anyone thinking about the Railroad History course, I verified that all the graded assignments are listed in the syllabus and the dates are set in stone. There are no last minute, randomly log in and find an assignment surprises in this course.

Is it true that in the summertime WNMU does not charge non residential fees for tuition? I went to summer 2008 and if one takes 9 hours they charge a little over $1,000, however if you do the same during the fall and spring semesters the price jumps to over $4,000 for the same 9 hours. Has anyone enrolled in more than 6 hours during the summer?

Yes. My wife did that. You can only take more than 6 units during the summer session.

That is true. It is also true that one pays in-state tuition if you are an out-of-state online student taking six hours or less. See my link to WNMU's tuition page on the MA History thread http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30213.

I signed up for the RR course. I did some investigating on the professor, he seems like a fantastic choice for this course.

I signed up as well. I wasn't a prior student so I filled out an application for non-degree special student status. I agree, the professor sounds really good. I've been emailing him and he's VERY excited about the material and teaching the class.

Have you heard back about getting into the class? I only filled out my application on Wed. but haven't heard anything yet. I emailed Katherine Warren when I sent it in to give her a heads up and she said she'll look out for my application. How long does it take for them to get back to you usually? I already bought the books. :) I figured, worse case, I don't get in but I end up with 4 books that I really want to read. It's still a win but hopefully nothing explodes and they get me enrolled smoothly.

Yes. Apparently New Mexico has some tuition "thing" that allows out of state people to take up to 6 credits at in-state tuition, and during the summer they only charge in-state tuition regardless of how many courses you take. I'm taking (or at least I signed up for) 9 credits to take advantage of that. I would have liked to have taken more, but A) they didn't offer enough, and B) they all overlap which would have driven me absolutely nuts!

9 units is ambitious. My logic is that 3 units in 4 weeks is enough. Of course I am teaching summer school. You must be off for the summer.

Exactly. That's why I want to try to get as much as I can. We don't do summer school at my high school. We do a grant funded thing called project graduation, but that could be in June or even May. It depends on the need.

You should get word pretty quick. I had to resubmit for the summer (I originally applied for the fall) and heard back within 24 hours. Don't stress getting in the class, I believe there is 23 slots remaining.

Katherine rocks. She said I'm good to go and I'm registered for the class. So far, I'm impressed with the school and how it operates. No complaints.

Looks like we're going to be classmates.

Thanks everyone for the information. Now I can take three English courses yeah! (I'm off for the summer!)
I am still undecided about the other concentrations, I'm leaning towards Psychology. Has anyone taken the psychology courses? I have limited psychology background and was wondering about the demands of the classwork.

BTY fall 2009 classes have posted too.
