Indeed. I just got back from seeing Shen. He took care of everything! I guess other people have been coming in for the same thing. He not only take care of it, but he developed some software (prior) to permanently remove the windows 10 pop up reminder. Whew! I also got a brand new keyboard and mouse when I was there. The usual shop rate is 95.00, but he gave me a 50% discount. The sum total for everything was $64.44!

He also told me that he doesn't use Windows. He uses Lenux. He showed me something called Unbuntu, which is provided by some non profit group and this stuff is free. I guess technically, he is a Developer, and from what I could surmize, Lenux seems to work better for his purposes.

Man! That Shen kicks some major ass! Problem solved.

I think you mean Ubuntu Linux. I use that on a server. On my laptop at home I use a type of Linux called Mint that's based on Ubuntu.

Oh, thanks for the clarification. Shen explained it to me, but most of what he told me flew right over my head. For some reason, my brain doesn't compute when it come to technological matters.

At the risk of asking whether Jesus or Muhammed was better, how do people here feel about Windows 10 relative to the latest version of Mac OS X?

Heh. To that end, I could stick with Linux, which I like. But just from a hardware perspective, a 13" MacBook Air checks all my boxes, so it's on the list of possibilities. And I'm intrigued by Garage Band. If I weren't on the fence about OS X I'd have bought one already.

Sure enough, I bought a MacBook Air not long after I wrote that. I'm happy with it.

Great, Steve! People should get what makes them happy. I think Apple computers are great, but the company was started and headed (twice) by the late Steve Jobs, so I can't bring myself to buy anything Apple for myself - bought my son an IPod once for Christmas and something Apple for my granddaughter - I'll buy Apple stuff for others, not for me.

I bought a new HP laptop on sale last summer. I knew I wasn't going to like Windows 10 (and I was right) and was disappointed to find out very quickly that many new machines (including mine) can't be rolled back reliably to Windows 7. No Windows 7 drivers for some of the new hardware. (And there's obviously no money in making any such drivers). Salesman lied - nothing new about that! So, I installed Ubuntu Linux (no cost whatsoever) and had a dual-boot system. Beforehand, I asked the store (big chain) about their charge for installing Linux. The "tech" (?) said yeah, he could try - never done it before. Cost of installation would be around $200! Later, I read that updates to either Win-10 or Linux in dual-boot mode could clobber the other operating system completely and possibly do other damage.. So I removed Windows 10 and went Linux only. Should have done it 15 years ago. Now I have a heck of a machine for $250!

I'm not Jobs's biggest fan, but... well, he's gone. And he didn't take it with him.

My Linux machines were all single boot. (The only exception was a cheap ChromeBook that I rooted and installed Lubuntu on.) I've read that having a proper Windows installation can be useful even if you never run it, because the DLLs make WINE work more reliably. (Although I read that a long time ago, so even that may be out of date.)

Anyway, if I went back to Linux, and I'm not saying I wouldn't, I would be tempted by the Librem 15 from Purism: https://shop.puri.sm/shop/librem-15/

I'm using precisely two old Windows programs under WINE with no problems. WINE knows old stuff really well! Thanks for the mention of Librem 15 - I'll have a look. OK I just did. Oh, it's a computer - I thought it was a Linux distro. And it's $1,599. My HP was $250 brand new in the box. A little rich for me. I'll look at the PureOS it runs, though. Might be interesting.

Looked at PureOS. Yes, interesting. Privacy of a sort - rare these days. I'll grab a copy.
