I don't know David outside of the fact that he was a decent member here for a number of years. Obviously he used DI as a platform to discuss/advertise WLC and for the most part that was OK. I have a vague memory of telling him once that this wasn't an advertising forum for his college but I don't remember it being a big deal either way. I confess that I still don't fully understand everything that happened regarding WLC and DEAC and DI. hierophant's summary was as good as anything I've read anywhere. I don't know that WLC was what I would call a classic diploma mill even though it seems clear that it was substandard. While he did get piled on for a short while I think the biggest problem I've got with the whole thing is that he disappeared. After all, if you want people to understand what happened, your point of view, etc. then you've got to hang in there and answer the questions, clarify the issues, etc. If you're just going to abandon ship then you have to accept the fact that people will fill in the blank spaces with whatever info is available. In this case it's all negative. Disappearing just looks bad and my interpretation of it is that I'm being allowed to believe all the bad things are true. All of it. So I'm unhappy about that. Feeling a little used, a little bruised. But it's not a big deal, I had nothing invested in their success or their failure. My guess is that someday some information will surface that will tie it all together and shine some light on it. Whatever.

I have no skin in the WLC game. I also feel like the world isn't really divided into easily binary categories of "legit" versus "mill." I think that there are plenty of well intentioned schools out there lacking accreditation who just want to do their thing peacefully. I think there are also some fully accredited dumpster fires.

I like to believe that WLC was an earnest attempt to do something cool. Basically, center a college around a single degree and focus on a low price point and go from there. It's a neat thought. Kind of like trying to be the next Thunderbird (before being absorbed into a larger university). Or, maybe, REALLY try to be like Thunderbird by being absorbed into a larger university. Just imagine kicking off an MBA program that takes off to the point where it just gets gobbled up by the University of Colorado or some other unquestionably legitimate school. That would be quite an accomplishment for a man in that field.

Was it really a scam? was it a fool's errand? I don't know. I had no skin in the game. It was a cool story and I'm disappointed that it went no further and that some people probably got burned along the way.

I just found it funny that he left that smoldering mess behind to go work for a company that does tech for over the road trucking. The industry that his primary DI critic just happens to work in. Also, all the good villains seem to have doctorates.
