CCHS used to be in San Diego (or nearby). Perhaps it's moved.

American Military University doesn't sound as bad to me as American Public University System, which makes it sound like a public university system!

What was the University of South Carolina - Spartanburg is now the University of South Carolina - Upstate; or Up U for short.

I like the word "Bemidji". Besides, my best friend's parents both have degrees from there, and they're utterly brilliant.

North Shore Community College in Lynn, MA is sometimes nicknamed The University of the Lynnway after the strip of car dealers and industrial parks that it's on.

And there's UMass, which used to sell a baseball shirt that unbuttoned in the middle, separating into "UM" "ASS".

I think Upper Iowa University is a pretty funny name.

Oh yeah, there's also Goucher College, which reminds me of Gudger College, the alma mater of Kirk Van Houten from The Simpsons.

And a friend and I were planning a new university that somehow came to be known as Coca-Cola Presents Lovely Melanie University. We might change that, even though I think the sponsorship money and the boost to her ego are both good things.

    Confusing College Names

At one point, Excelsior College http://www.excelsior.edu/ (formerly known as Regents College), was called the University of the State of New York. This was confusing because there is the highly-regarded (and expensive), private New York University (NYU) and the enormous State University of New York (SUNY) System with branches throughout the state.

Here in Australia, it's the University of Wollongong. Isn't the name weird?

The VMI cadets fought at the Battle of New Market. See the book "Seed Corn of the Confederacy."

And it's not strange for it to be called "Military" since it's required that all students be in ROTC.

    Re: Confusing College Names

The University of the State of New York is the New York equivalent of a state board of education, and all of the universities in New York are members. I once pointed out that that means that you could technically refer to Binghamton University, State University of New York, The University of the State of New York.

And if that's not an unusual and confusing college name, I don't know what is.

How about John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York? If that isn't bad enough, I suppose that it should be "John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the
City University of New York of the University of the State of New York".

Try putting that on a business card!

    Tony

P.S. A few of my favorites:

    Panhandle State University (OK)
    Jones International University
    Harvard University
