I teach online for UOP. I've never had a whole class pass much less all receive As. The courses I teach do not have the "group component" that I've heard faculty of the past talk about. I used to teach (residential and online) in another large university's graduate program. I believe that my UOP courses (200-level) are nearly as difficult as the other school's graduate (500-level) courses.

The loss here, is that there is a misunderstanding in the role of a college.

A college's job isn't to fill you up like a cup, it is to issue credit in exchange for payment and jumping through various hoops.

Becoming educated, in my opinion, is entirely different. I think it was Mark Twain who said something like I try not to let my schooling interfere with my education. There is wisdom in that point of view, because it recognizes schooling as an industry. (which it is)

You had an easy class. Rejoice. Move on.

It should also depend on the level of the class i.e. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior. At the online university that I teach for (not UoP), I typically get many junior students who flop out, but at the senior level, I typically get entire classes that pass AND where everyone get's an A.

It's also common to find at B&M schools ginormous freshmen classes and tiny senior classes. The class sizes invariably get smaller as attrition occurs as students begin to quit.

I've taught many courses for UoP, and had exactly one where everyone earned an "A" grade, but they really did earn them; it was an outstanding class. To demonstrate one reason why UoP isn't a joke, I got an e-mail after I submitted grades, asking me to explain why everyone earned the top grade. I explained why, inviting them to go back and look at the quality of work submitted, and the matter was resolved.

I've issued many, many D's and F's to students at UoP, and the course solicitations keep coming in.

Unfortunately, this is true. I know people that have gotten GMATs, IT Certifications and degrees by using proxy testing services from China.

There are also well known dissertation writing services. The reality is that you cannot trust credentials anymore and for this reason many companies do their own testing to screen candidates.

They are smarter than this, they normally use non traceable payment systems such as western union and they use word of mouth to advertise. The proxy testing phenomenon in China is very well known and for this reason Microsoft and Cisco not longer accept exams from this country from non residents. I read few articles about this fraud scheme, there are people that have gotten degrees from known British Universities by using proxy services. The TOEFL exams are also a big business in China, many chinese students get into big name Universities because of these services.

I have never heard about a UoP proxy service but I'm sure that there are some available.

Really? You can't trust them anymore? Then why don't we see a huge shakeup in the tertiary education industry? Where's the hue and cry? If suddenly higher education credentials can't be trusted, I would think we'd see something about it in the media. A multi-billion dollar industry with public, not-for-profit, and for-profit sectors both in the U.S. and around the world, suddenly has its integrity and credibility torn from it?

Testing and screening? When was the last time a social scientist with a Ph.D. got handed a #2 pencil and a test booklet when applying for a job? As for screening, it would verify (or belie) one's claims regarding credentials, but it would most certainly not detect the legitimate or illegitimate means one used in order to obtain them. That's if the company does any pre-employment screening at all.

As for knowing people who've committed the frauds described above, why do you associate with liars and theives? I don't know anyone who does those kinds of things. Hanging around the wrong street corners, I guess.

Or should this be adjusted for hyperbole? I thought so.

Actually, for scientist positions the screening is done normally by asking copies of publications.

  12. Maybe you expect too much from the media. Other than the occasional aspiring journalist, weekend internet crusader or hobby blogger, the media leaves the issue of degree mills (a multimillion dollar black market) nearly untouched. In fact, many of these same media aren't against allowing mills to advertize in their very publications.

If they are silent on the pay-and-print "education" industry, one couldn't expect them to go after the well known and/or accredited institutions that have issues of reliability and program outcomes.

Not really - he just asked his counselor to plan him the easiest degree (it was a geography degree).

Why do we bother allowing "Such and Such University is a Joke" threads? (Honest question.) especially those surrounding U of P.

I've been here for maybe a month or two and I've seen three of these now with this one included. I got sucked into the second one cause I didn't know any better.

There are accounts and posters and likely IP addresses that just start arguments here for giggles. Use the ignore function or IP ban them :)

    Two cents.

Yeah, right. I was a student and I spoke to people that graduated. I even know of a mentally handicapped man that registered that did not even have a high school diploma.

We have a mentally handicap man in my classesat a AACSB school, fighting his way through - it is inspiring.

This is how diploma mills operate, standard procedure from college to college. The reason Walden and U of Phoenix both operate like this is because it is a profit making formula. Sort of like how Burger King and McDonald's use the same profitable formula to turn out cheap low quality food.

These colleges are operating like fast food joints.

I hope he does not get stuck with student loans that he did not understand like the person I am talking about. Enrolling a mentally handicapped that did not graduate from high school into a college and sticking him with student loans should be enough to take a school's license away, in my opinion.

Sorry, but that's not good enough. If you make a huge claim--and you did--you have to support it with huge evidence. A vague swipe at the media just won't cut it. Nor does your reducing your comments from making higher education credentials into a large wasteland to a media conspiracy.

If you have evidence supporting your first statement, fine. Let's have it. Until then, vague comments about a non-existent conspiracy will not suffice as a substitute.

Comparing Walden with Phoenix is absurd. Anyone who knows the history of Walden would reject this outright.

Go get some old copies of Bear's guide and read about Walden.
