Does this suggest that Harvard and Union should relocate to Oregon where Degree Mills are illegal while on the other hand Gay Marriages are legal? I guess intllectual development goes hand in hand with sexual awakening?

Mike and Gus, just in case you were unaware, Mr. Ruhl has taken distance learning classes from five different institutions which means that in his opinion, he's more qualified to speak on distance learning than most everyone else here. :D

So what is it that you want, Dennis?

Do you want Rich (and presumably the rest of us) to embrace all the non-accredited 'universities' out there? To treat them as no different than RA schools?

Wouldn't that be dangerous? Wouldn't it destroy Degreeinfo's consumer protection function and subvert the meaning of degrees themselves?

If you would graciously allow us to continue criticizing schools, how do you propose that we distinguish between good non-accredited schools and schools that are substandard? Without accreditation as a guide, what criteria do you propose that we use instead?

I don't believe that it's possible to place doctoral programs in a clear ordinal ranking.

If a dissertation represents original research, then every university is a leader in the precise subjects of the dissertations it turns out. Every accredited university produces original work that might be valuable to somebody.

My point is that if somebody at a 'fourth-tier' university is working in your area of interest, but nobody at Harvard is, then the fourth-tier university is probably better than Harvard for your purposes.

I'd argue that a good non-accredited university can (and occasionally does) turn out valuable work as well. But without the quality assurance that accreditation represents, there's less reason and more danger in simply assuming that academic soundness exists without any clear evidence of it.

The burden of proof shifts when accreditation is absent.

Clustered ordinals - even a challege for a good proctologist.

There's no such thing as clustered ordinals - I think I read that in a stats book.

I was meaning as the first degree - of course there are doctoral programs.

    Class of 2006.

The misrepresenting part was for the enjoyment of those who repeat it often.

That would be 4 institutions, I have taken courses from a couple others in the past.

How about you Bill. Since you have such an interest and give such fine critiques maybe you should try one.

I firmly believe in the value of accreditation.

The possibilty of rating schools ordinally may be difficult and subjective but I don't recall it stopping anyone.

Most people would have an idea which are the best and worst, at least subjectively.

Fourth tier better at some things? Sure - the subject of some Union dissertations are in fields that many people didn't know there were fields.

What do I want? A little few less sensitive people. What do you want?

Is that why people pursue doctorate degrees?

I don't really care if someone (Dennis) chooses to complete a DBA at CCU. I just don't understand the reason(s) for doing so. Every possibly legitimate reason I can think of can be better fulfilled through other avenues.

Maybe someone (Dennis?) can enlighten me.

    Tony

PS This is not meant as an attack, as I think Dennis adds another, sometimes interesting, viewpoint to xxxxxxxx.xxx (lol.) It is just that I have never understood the reasons for picking CCU and then disparaging Union. Then again, I have never understood how anyone can put up with the shi/tro/lls* at the other "DL boards," although I do admit to engaging in a little bit of rubber-necking myself occasionally. I cringe when reading their "expert's" "opinions." ...and I thought degree mills hurt legitimate dl programs.

*Thanks to Uncle Janko for this succinct term.

Dennis, perhaps you misunderstood that it was a joke?*

    * The humor is that it's the normal Dennis response. :D

    This is sordid.

O'Neil & Albrecht, thanks for your defence of librarianship against wowserism, and for the list of DL librarianship stuff. Well said and well researched.

    Now we're all oversensitive. Riiiight.

When a poster shits on us in another forum and then says he was only kidding, when that same poster prevaricates endlessly and thereby drags a reputable unaccredited school through the manure, when that very same poster keeps shoving his head up the arse of another poster's grad school looking for daylight and then pops up here to clean his teeth, that poster shouldn't whinge about anybody being oversensitive, if we simply and placidly note a funny smell.

Those of us who are actually working on stuff that requires research and not mere opinion are grateful for the learning and facilitation available through the good offices of libarrians (as my Missouri relatives say). I'm in a remote rural area and use several university libraries, each a major drive away, to do my research. One in South Bend has been extraordinarily helpful in getting obscure material for me from all over the world. One in Grand Rapids has been exceptionally helpful to me in dealing with some partial disabilities that hinder my physical use of a library.

Whoever has no respect for librarians has no respect for learning.

    1) Agree.

    2) Wow - to repeat - just get a new bowl of cornflakes.

    3) I am guilty of saying that librarians are not academic staff - so disrespectful but alas so true.

Okay I will concede - Union should be admitted to the Ivy League on the basis of their outstanding academic librarians. What to call their football team - The Union Eunuchs?

Me sensitive? While not a major of RCD (needs to work on more an being unflappable and a little less on being infallible), and while I looked at Union and decided it was not for me (really wanted an engineering degree preferably ABET (and got it)), I do find it irritating to here the same drivel over and over again from the same(?) sources citing something that occurred 20 years ago or stating opinions as if they where immutable facts.

Many schools have problems at times in their history, most come through them. As schools in all departments are not equal, if they where why even have to decide which school to go to? Union is accredited, which must count for something, if not why the big rush by many of the legitimate (and some marginal) state approved schools to become DETC or equivalent?

There are a couple of people who have done extensive research into the DL environment, one of them could take some charm school training, but he does know what he is talking about.

Unfortunately when others listen to them it directly hurts the bank books of some, and the egos of others. Whenever I read a response that attacks the two (four, or six+ (depending on who is counting)), a quick search usually finds that there is a bruised wallet or ego (or both involved).

In many respects while we listen to the attackers due to the freedom of speech, we must defend the attacked because of the freedom of the press (http://www.poetry-archive.com/f/on_the_freedom_of_the_press.html).

Yipes, I’m supposed to be doing some final projects in Design of Experiments and Engineering Decision Support Systems. As they say in Tex-Mex “Hasta la bye bye’s!”

I find it funny that Dennis continues to attack Union, an average to better than average RA school. The only rational that makes much sense is that his ego bruised by the poor reputation of CCU which he openly admits he will attempt to misrepresent. Overall, pretty sad.

If I had $40,000 in play money Uniion would be fine.

I believe after deducting the normal charge for the MBA my DBA, should I be so lucky as to complete, will cost me either $1,000 or $1,200 (I forget)

I am playing a slightly different game with largely different money.

    RA vs. non-RA degrees

    Denis Ruhl,

I don't want to add fuel to the fire, but...
    • Do you have any RA degrees?
