He's hinting at calling off the restrictions we've seen put in place. This gives deniers an excuse to do what they want instead of what we all need. It could get millions of people infected than would otherwise be.

One of my coworkers likened it to stopping the antibiotics halfway through the prescribed course. You've had enough of the impact on your gut, you feel a little better so you stop. And that might not work out so well for you...

I think at this stage, with the numbers we're talking about, lifting the restrictions would be nothing short of genocide.

Or rather, millions of people infected more rapidly than they would have otherwise, leading to otherwise preventable overwhelming of hospitals and thus avoidable deaths.

I know that I'm getting worried to the point of having thoughts that make me uncomfortable. Here's one

I'm worried that the US will become weakened to the point where some other country (maybe Russia, maybe China, maybe Turkey . . . ) will make a move. Something they wouldn't even consider under other circumstances. But now, who's going to stop us? The US? Donald Trump? And so someone makes a power grab. And they get away with it. And so then they start thinking of making another move. And then others think of making a move. And no one is going to do anything about it. Because Trump doesn't care and half the country is sick. Pay attention to Covid19 in the military. Maybe I need a nap.

Or both. You're certainly correct that such an action would fail to "flatten the curve," but it could also get people infected who might otherwise escape. In other words, it could "plateau" the curve. But no matter what, it portends a worse outcome than if we ride this out.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "a move"? I mean, Putin annexed Crimea while Obama was commander-in-chief and he didn't do a thing. Besides, COVID-19 is bad enough to overwhelm hospitals, but if even unchecked it doesn't seem like it sidelines half the population at once (other than voluntarily as a means to slow it down).

    That's true. It's doubly foolish.

If anyone saw the viral rant by the guy from the IMF last week who tried to rant and argue against shutting down the economy... and tried to argue it would cost more than the virus. He came down with symptoms over the weekend, tested positive, and passed away yesterday at only 28 years old. He may have been an absolute arse, but it is a shame how the severity of this is not sinking into people.

Wow, that's powerful. I don't know who you mean, though, do you have a link?

Orban's been a big problem for a long time. But okay, you were describing what the first domino of a long sequence might be, so perhaps that fits.

Or maybe I'm overreaching for some indication that I was right. I don't know. But if he abuses the power he has taken then I'm starting to look smart. If the power grab extends beyond the borders or involves some nasty bits of human rights violations then maybe I got it right. These things can look like a dominoes falling sometimes. Arab Spring-type stuff. Time will tell.

I understand that that is the case. It will make the election more emotional and perhaps his adversaries will mobilize the voters more effectively than in the past.
