    Hey Rich,

Just an interesting observation. I read that you were an Air force officer, I was just wandering, were you a MIG jet fighter pilot
therein ?. You know the Russian made fighting machine that is said to be one of the best in the business.

I was just wandering how lovely it would have been,if a former Mig pilot later holds a MIGS doctorate degree
umnn umnn ... Timmy ade urging Rich Douglas to go back to MIGS.

    Rich and MIGS,Perfect together :.))

No, in the United States Air Force we called MiGs "targets." So you're right, some things never change.

As far as my doctoral plans go, they're covered. Thanks for your advice.

The invasion is more likely by MIGS part-time sales reps.

I am neither a Migs Student, Nor a Migs sales rep. I am just a fair minded fellow Expresing his feelings.

I don't think that Timmy has any MIGS connection. He is from my country and we have corresponded privately about four times in the past.

The invasion is more likely by MIGS part-time sales reps.

Russell - I'm not a sales rep or a student yet, I'm just comparing and contrasting and trying to decide where to go for a PhD - I think the invasion is from reading Bear's latest catalog that came out for grad students in the midwest just recently, and it lists MIGS / CEU as a very good choice for a university 'that is in the process of getting accredidation' and offers PhD distance learning.

About 40 or 50 grad students that I've been 'following' from grad course through grad course in distance learning classes in the last two years are getting ready to graduate with MATs (me included). Most of us are teachers and make about $25,000 and sometimes less a year in this small town where I live. We can't afford PhDs that cost $30,000 or more or even $20,000 (tuition reinbursement is $500 a year) yet we don't want to relocate or move into the city so we stay where we are because we like our jobs and the schools where we work.

So when Bear's cataglog listed PhD distance learning degrees can be earned by Monterrey and stated the university was "in the process of getting accreditation", it caught our attention.

So, I think that's why it seems a renewed interest has popped up - many of us are teachers in our last semester at Fontbonne, Webster, or Maryville and being distance ed, we know each other by e-mail only and pass the word along when we find something like Monterrey being positively mentioned in Bears.

I actually mentioned Monterrey to at least 30 or so fellow grads and friends who want to go on with their education. Sorry if I caused a commotion, but like I said, we don't have many options and Bears was our 'bible'. Mary

I think it is clear that MIGS is a poor choice for any student wanting a reputable degree. What I was trying to point out is that within 2 days we have had 3 new pro-MIGS posters when I don't think we have had any in the last month or two. It is enough to make one wonder if they are real or not. Anyway I hope you find a program that is worthy of the effort a Phd requires.

Have you looked at the University of South Africa or University of Southern Queensland?
Better and also cheap options, may be as cheap as MIGS without the negative publicity.
I don't have anything against MIGS, but they sell themselves as a cheap time-share resort in Mexico, not my type. Even in the states you will find MIGS type universities, they use cheap tricks to attract students. When I requested a catalog it was nothing more than a word document with a very poor structured PhD, with tons of faculty from top universities (working part time and holding full time positions somewhere else), even the president has like two or three jobs somewhere else, a flat rate for a PhD, and putting emphasis that the PhD can be completed in a very short period of time, does it sound familiar?

The whole MIGS has been a joke around here for about a year, even Trinity College & University doesn’t have its own spot in degree info, so why to go for the worst option of year when there are better options? may be time? MIGS could offer you a PhD in six months but what is the purpose of this? In some third world countries you can buy a full-accredited PhD by the same price with no work at all, why no to go to some of these places and just buy the degree?

OK - that is a deal. I don't care if I can't pronounce the name of the university, but if it is accredited - GAAP, let us have the list.

    In all seriousness ...

In other words Dave, You and the rest of the Folks are so used to “freely” bombarding

MIGS/CEU.Now you are surprised that some people are returning the favor. No Dave, We are not at all connected with MIGS/CEU. The constant rain of anti MIGS/CEU sentiments were more than enough to cause sympathetic responses. I think you Guys simply over killed the MIGS issue, more so that nobody was saying anything new or different.

It just got to a point that one has to wonder if those postings were really advisory, or were meant to Counter Migs marketing efforts.

All the facts are out. Let those who still see anything good in Migs go for it, and those Who think less of Migs can equally discard it. There are plenty of far More important DL related issues that can benefit a lot of us if discussed. On that note Dave, DO YOU (OR ANYONE ELSE) HAVE ANY IDEAS ON SOURCING FOR FUNDS IN DL PROGRAMS?

    Enjoy your Sunday.

    Tim.

BG 14 lists dozens of accredited short- and non-residency doctoral programs. Only MIGS has created this kind of furor. And why is that? GST and Touro Univesity International seem to have similar arrangements with Potch and Touro College, respectively. While their situations have been discussed on this board, none have raised the cackles of so many. Only two potential MIGS students have ever posted on this board until recently: Peter French and me. GST and Touro have seen their supporters well represented here, without all the negativity. (Rightly so, I might add.) MIGS has brought all of this upon itself, and one of its highly placed operatives posing as a potential student isn't going to change that.

To be fair, MIGS charges a tuition rate by the semester hour.

...but you told us all that you had pulled out? So you never did, or are you back there again? I knew that you really do believe in MIGS - you are 7:4 on in support of it if my stats are correct!

I'll hold Forman while you hit him - will that make you feel better?

Unless you've got a different version than I do, it says nothing of the sort. Perhaps you should go back and take another read.

The only thing it says about accreditation is "Confirmation Pending".

It nowhere says that it is a good choice (or a bad choice or any kind of choice at all) for a university. There is no recommendation of any kind given.

Given that some here are already concerned about what role you may be playing, you might consider being very careful with your facts (or lack thereof).

Tom - it is divided into sections - one section on those to avoid, one on questions and answers, one section on those that are good but not accredited, etc. etc. I have versions from the mid 90s - meanwhile is there a way to prove my legitimacy so we can get off this kick of me being a plant and get on with the subject at hand. Thank you, Mary

    Mary,

This could possibly be some of the problem you are experiencing. Since distance learning is an ever changing discipline (e.g., new schools opening, current schools closing, transitions ever evolving, etc.) one needs the most updated edition of Bears' Guide (14th edition, 2001).

Please be aware that Bears' Guide is not designed to make your choices for you. Rather, it is a resource to facilitate your research and to help you make informed decisions.

IIRC, you said you were part of a group of educators looking for Ph.D. programs within your budget. "Bears' Guide to the Best Education Degrees" has just been released from Ten Speed Press, and can be ordered from the same, or from www.Amazon.com . The cost is around $15.00, is around 150 pages, and highlights some 350 programs.

The description at www.Amazon.com states that it highlights over 100 programs, not 350. My error!
