    I didn't think that. McGovern was up against an unbeatable incumbent. But creepy?

    On another note: McGovern was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in WWII. He held a PhD from Northwestern, too.

    The moment it was revealed, we all knew he would have to leave the ticket. Back then, psychological treatment was a huge deal. And Eagleton had a LOT, including several hospitalizations.

    I'm not so sure a candidate would survive that revelation even today.
    There was no systematic removal. McGovern kicked him off the ticket because he was a political liability--a huge one.

    I'm not saying it was right. Lots of things in our past history were both wrong and normal. This was that.

    McGovern would have lost no matter what. More accurately stated, Nixon would have beaten anyone. Maybe not by such a huge landslide but Nixon still would have beaten anyone the Democrats had put up.
