High School? Well, looking back 10 years...I was a geek in high school, took AP courses. I was working 36 hours per week during my Junior and Senior years to support myself because I was kicked out of the house at 17. I was also school's unpaid Information Technologist Assistant. I earned my CompTIA A+, Network+, MCP, MCSA, and MCSE during my senior year.

I took off to the Marine Corps right after graduation. So, flashing back I have been working full-time since I turned into 17 while attending school at the same time.

It was more my mom's political and religious beliefs than any particular effort on my part.

In my day, they were called "unwed mothers" and booted out of High School. :naughty:

Some of the more fortunate ones were "sent away" for a few months, and returned sans enfants -who had been given up for adoption or placed in foster homes.

High school - Fairly decent athlete, everyone seemed to like me, but I wasn't one of the "cool kids". Being at an all-male military school prevented a lot of the bad drama that a co-ed environment can create.

College (first attempt) - Total party animal who took full advantage of being freed from the military school environment. I spent my days getting drunk and playing air hockey at Punter's Pub on Huntington Avenue, and didn't even finish my first quarter at Northeastern University.

I included that because I don't think there are a lot of women on this board and I thought it might catch some male attention. Sorry for making assumptions on both sides of that calculation. It's an old story. A guy has a lot of sex and he's a hero. A girl does the same and she's ________ . (whatever you fill in the blank is typically not complementary)

As for rmm's post, sure, I left out lots of potential categories. Lots of Preppies in my school but not a surfer to be found. Apply your own label.

Isn't that STUD and SLUT are the same in term of equality? The only thing that female/women look at different way. I do not mind people call me as a male whore. lol:smileeek:

Imagine being the one guy in school who was adamant about waiting until marriage. Girls can get away with it to some extent, although there are names for a girl like that, too. Guys... ugh. Locker rooms were never fun. It was disheartening to hear every single last guy saying the nastiest things about girls that I really liked and respected, then claim that there was something wrong with me because I didn't want any part of it.

In my case, no such imagining needed. I was that one guy.

I was very shy and rather unpopular, but was known to some extent for being "smart." I didn't get in trouble much in school, wasn't allowed out and about much, was rather sheltered. But I got in trouble once because some girls stole my math homework out of my locker and were copying it over lunch in the cafeteria. It was assumed they had my permission and I never told the teacher who discovered this anything different so I took the same punishment they got (which was not much as I recall).

My father was a high school dropout who was very down on higher education and frequently made us stay home from school to work on the farm. He actually punished me and yelled at me for bringing home too many books, and would not allow me to stay up and do homework. Out of 8 kids, only 2 went to college (my youngest sister and I). I didn't start college until just before my 30th birthday, after having 3 kids.

At my high school graduation, I was not recognized for anything other than earning a NYS Regents diploma. No scholarships, no awards, nothing. And I was not on the honor society or anything like that, did not participate in sports or other activities. I was was a total nobody. My father did not attend my graduation nor do I think he attended any of our graduations.

I love going back to my class reunions. The once shy unpopular kid is the only one in my class with a Ph.D. now and I have a daughter working at MIT and another who graduated from Princeton. Physically speaking, I dare say I have aged better than most of those once popular cheerleader types I went to school with. :) My 35th reunion is coming up this summer.

They did not announce this at graduation because they only announced the top 3 by GPA but I later learned I was 4th and just fractions of a point below the 3rd. This was with making very little effort. My two daughters were valedictorians and so yes, I live through them a little bit vicariously and I do think I could have possibly been a valedictorian too if I had put effort into high school. But then I would have had to do a speech and I'm sure I would have died of stage fright doing that (I think I could get through it now but then I really WAS that shy).
