But -- isn't there usually a filter for that - e.g. statement and verification of applicant's income? Certainly, there should be.

 

People lie

 

That's why you verify. Documentation. Proof.

 

People lie to their governments, too. You can't prove a negative (lack of income), you can only prove what you told the government. And, depending on circumstances, it may or may not match up to reality.

I know of someone who was bitten by this in university. Their parents owned a small shop. The shop made just enough for them all to live relatively comfortably, but they still qualified for lower-income dorms for the university. But tax fraud was rampant in their country at the time. So the people who were in charge of the program looked at the official tax forms and other documentation they were given and told this person point blank that they obviously didn't qualify because "everyone cheats on their taxes" and, "obviously" the shop probably made at least 2x as much as reported on the tax statements. This person's parents never lied on their taxes about how much the shop was earning, because they didn't think it was worth it, but they were still penalized anyway.

How far do you go to "verify" that students are "low income enough" to be "worthy" of a scholarship or discount? The less income a person has, the less able they're going to be to provide proof of this fact.

 

It's not about "worthy." Don't try to put words in my mouth. "Qualifying" is different to "worthy." Judging "worthiness" is an offense to dignity. "Not qualifying" - much less so. Then, the deficiency is just a number - impersonal. Here, the tax assessment form one gets from the Government after a tax return has been processed, is sufficient income proof for most purposes - renting an apartment, getting a loan etc. No system is foolproof, but it cuts down the scope for liars - a LOT.

Admittedly. I only know our system. Perhaps other countries have a verification system that is just as effective.
And perhaps some do not. And maybe you know -- or maybe not.

 

I'd live in my parents' house - till well after 40 - along with my wife and kids. I'd not bother with university. Instead I'd learn some sleazy dodge that would make me a minimal living - selling used cars - or repairing computers, which is the most fraud-prone job I can think of. Easy money.

One fine day in late middle age, I'd invest some of my hoarded "Privilege" money in a seaworthy sailboat - and bury the rest in a Caribbean bank. I'd wave goobye to the family forever and right now, I'd be living in exotic ʻĀfareaitu, the capital of Mo'orea, Tahiti, with a young Polynesian woman (22) of exquisite beauty...

That's the best I can do, and the best I can hope for, at this hour of the morning.

 

I got an email from Quantic recently,


It linked to a short Qualtrics survey. Initially I started the survey which included questions about whether you have a business idea, what would be the most difficult elements of starting one if you were going to, etc. Then it moved into really specific questions about my experience with consulting services, how much I would pay, have I ever hired a consultant before and would I be willing to, and so on. I started to feel like this wasn't a survey to understand Quantic alumni's future needs in a general sense, but to turn me specifically into a lead and revenue for a Quantic-hired consultant. It gave me the ick, so I exited out without completing it. Unfortunately no option to discard the answers I did give.

Interestingly, Quantic is not hiring at all right now. I wonder if they're tightening their belts after a runaway expansion. 42% would recommend working at Quantic to a friend, and only 31% have a positive outlook as per Glassdoor. Additionally, their ratings are pretty stagnant, at 3.1, then declining to around 2.2 in December 2022 and now back up to 3.1 out of 5. For Glassdoor, those are all bad scores. Positive reviews seem to be primarily Admissions Counselors and temps, while negative reviews are from others in the organization (especially content writers and instructional designers.) One review stated the company is "basically bankrupt" and benefits are being cut, yikes.

 

Hmm. The people who want 80-90% discounts might get their wish after all. Apply on Black Friday. Might be a good time for a "Desperation Sale." If you enrol, I hope you have the time you need to finish your degree. I smell trouble.

I have zero sympathy for ANY business school that gets itself into financial hot water. That's precisely what they're supposed to teach students to prevent, avoid - or at least overcome. If they can't do that for themselves .....Блять! smh...

They are a deac school? That's pricey

 

They award lots of scholarships so very few students pay sticker. I paid nothing and there's at least one other person on the board who got a 100% scholarship.
