    Orson,

I am sorry I am late to the party. The Great Depression was not just a USA thing. Look at Great Britain.

How anyone can compare shooting guns, driving a car, and any other activity with behaviors under the influence of mind-altering drugs is away beyond my scope of reason, intelligence, and comprehension.

  3. Laws, laws, and more laws....

I've always felt there are too damned many laws in this country, but that's the natural outcome of a continuously sitting legislature that needs to come up with a product. Both parties have been guilty of creating laws that are unnecessary, but personally I feel that Republicans love to create laws that limit personal behavior or activities they don't like, while out of the other side of their mouth they talk about "less government" and "removing barriers to trade".

    Interesting perception.

Unfortunately it's not that accurate. Many of the most stringent laws on the books regarding morality are in states with Democrats in the majority in state legislatures.

Also, Nevada (home of the so-called "Sin City") is a very Republican state with all state consitutional offices held by Republicans.

I am not arguing with you. I agree we have too many laws. I don't like seat belt or helmet laws (except of course when it comes to children). I am not even sure it's right to prohibit gay marriages or polygamous marriages. Who decides which laws we are going to have and which laws we are not going to have?

Even though we may not like the system and laws we have, anything else would be chaotic. I don't think anyone wants anarchy. The best we can do is vote for candidates who support our viewpoints.

I think you're generally right but that Jimmy adds some good qualifiers.

If we leave aside labels then here's what I believe happens in contemporary terms. Some people try to control the social behaviors of others while to a great degree leaving be their economic behaviors. Some others try just the opposite. Regardless of where they begin, they end in having to control both types of behaviors as there is no dividing line in human nature. If the process proceeds then it ends in a totalitarianism that is, well, total.

That's a bit too simple but I think it expresses the idea.

    Honestly, Bruce, I don't know.

If alcohol were illegal, would you not be saying that "alchohol users have to skulk around and obtain their drugs under constant threat of arrest & imprisonment, and the alcohol problem is still rampant."

Oh, but alcohol is not a drug. Or it is different. Or it doesn't count because it doesn't fit into my worldview.

    Whatever.

I think it is possible that crimes associated with drug use would decrease if those drugs were legalized, and that use of those drugs would not significantly increase. But I don't know.

Obviously, you do. There is no need for a scientific study. Bruce says it, so it must be true. Thanks for the info.

Can you tell us how to achive world peace? (Not that I think you would really want that.)

    No, we already tried that.

I'd be saying that it would be stupid to outlaw alcohol. Read my earlier post in this thread.

For once, you are right. You don't know. You have no clue whatsoever.

    You're welcome.

No, I can't. But, you misspelled the word "achieve".

    Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D

Another side of President Regan that is truly admirable.

While reading his eulogy for the late President , Ronal Reagan Jr. stated as follows:
    _______________________________________________
    "
Dad was also a deeply, unabashedly religious man. But he never made the fatal mistake of so many politicians wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage. True, after he was shot and nearly killed early in his presidency, he came to believe that God had spared him in order that he might do good. But he accepted that as a responsibility, not a mandate. And there is a profound difference.

Humble as he was, he never would have assumed a free pass to heaven. But in his heart of hearts, I suspect he felt he would be welcome there. And so he is home. He is free.
