While student loan borrowers have been worried about what Donald Trump's presidency means for their loans, one student loan forgiveness program appears to have been spared under the new administration.

During Linda McMahon's confirmation hearing for education secretary, she said she would continue to uphold the program despite any potential interference from Trump's recently formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

I don't believe in student loan forgiveness, but I do believe that student loans should be INTEREST-FREE. There should be a cap for each major based on its potential earnings. This will help to minimize students with a Bachelor's in Sociology owning $200,000 in student loans.

That is part of the point of student loan forgiveness. A substantial portion of the accumulated debt from people who take out student loans comes from interest, so forgiving debt of people who have been paying off loans for years forgives this interest.

I think TEKMAN just singlehandedly solved the student loan crisis. I'd be on board with that. However, there'd also need to be some way to ensure that the payments would actually be made. A disincentive to students taking the money and running.
There could be a sensible way of doing this where the interest is retroactively adjusted to the inflation rate over the course of the loan, plus a small fee to cover administrative costs. I'd be ok with that. I say this as someone who is by and large against loan forgiveness. At least, how it's currently proposed.

She wants to maintain the program that forgives loans for public service.

I served 32 years in the federal government, yet I don't qualify for this program. Its rules are bizarre.

Edit to the above: You just described, in essence, the current federal student loan system.

The biggest issue I have is no one blinked an eye when the government forgave $757 BILLION in PPP Loans. Now, do not get me wrong, there is $1.7 TRILLION in student loans…which is a substantial difference. However, forgive the interest, retain the principal, and let’s get some folks out of crippling debt.

I too do not qualify. Police qualify, but bizarrely not veterans, firefighters, or paramedics.

All the folks I know who did qualify are K-12 teachers.
