Some of them do, Rich. For one, OIUCM in Sri Lanka (Open International University of Complementary Medicine,) used to offer both Knighthoods and Dr. Albert Schweitzer prizes, as ~$400 add-ons with a PhD. It's been mentioned here in the forum - mostly by me, I think. The school claims these practices have long been stopped.

Others have done similar things too. That's how we get all the "Professor-Dr.-Sirs," high up in the mill business.

I believe there have also been some Euro-orbit Titelmühlen that inducted (or is that abducted) people into various Teutonic-sounding Orders of Knighthood. I also remember Knighthoods of the Eparchy of Nebraska. Not sure who offered them.

"S#!t don't change. S#!t stay the same." (Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.) :)

And that really is the point, right? A knighthood, or any other title, is only as good as who grants it and the system in which it sits.

Sounds like a similar discussion to diploma mills, propio degrees, semi-sorta-kinda-schools, etc.

Personally, I'm waiting for Ukraine to take back Crimea. I want to join the Knights of Yalta. :)

    Oh --- definitely. :)
Me too. It'll be good to see. Can hardly wait. :)

In the meantime, you can get a knighthood from the Sovereign Military Order of Sealand for not very much - around $90 US. I don't think the mods would like it if I posted the site - but it's easy to find. I think back a few years, you could have bought one (and a fistful of fake degrees) in the Principality of Seborga.

Rudy Giuliani received a knighthood from the United Kingdom. Because he is not a subject of the King, his is considered "honorary." That means he cannot use the styling "Sir Rudy." But he can use the postnominal "KBE" after his name. Ronald Reagan and Bob Geldof, too.

I think I'll wait for one of those. And wait. And wait. And wait....

Yes he did. And because Rudy has one of those, I'll wait, too, Rich, regardless of the reason for the award, --- at least till he's gone forever. I could legitimately use the styling "Sir John" (my real name) as I'm still a real, regular Brit, after 71 years away, 'ere in the Colonies. (Stuff happens - I'll tell you sometime.) But as Rudy has one - nah, I think I can do without.

Rught again, Rich. And here's that Eparchy of Nebraska thing - described as the fake it is.

Looks like one would have to buy those "knighthoods" from the boys at the Eparchy office. No outsiders.
Knighthood? What colour is the hood? Can I get one to match my Costaraguan Doctoral robes?

If Rudy would have simply stopped at 9-11 he would have gone down in history as "Rudy the Rock" and all of the other accolades thrown his way for his leadership. This in spite of not so glowing testimonials from his former wife and his children. But nope. He entered the strange Trumpian orbit that brought out other aspects of his personality and led to moments that were not his finest. Like so many biblical characters he soared to great heights but did not finish well and tainted his legacy.

Exactly. The bigger they are, the harder, faster and farther they fall. Trump? Putin? Their declines and falls will be EPIC! Both have started bad declines - the worst is ahead of them. Rudy? I'm not sure what could be worse than the wreckage(s) that have already happened.

If knightship isn't enough for you, there is also the one that grants you a Scottish Lordship or Ladyship.

Aye, there is. An' they dinna charge a pretty penny for 't. A great consideration for th' true Scotsman.

I remember a cereal company offer when I was a kid. No title, but in a promotion, there was a deed in the package to one square foot of land - on a site near an extinct mine in Alaska. This was before Alaska became the 49th State. (Yeah, I'm that old.) IIRC, all I had to do is fill my name in where it said "grantee of the second part" or some other legalese.

And if the Alaska State Government wants 70 years of back property taxes - I was a minor when I signed it (age 10) so they can forget it! :)

For a moment you had me thinking of our old Degreeinfo.com Chevalier, Gregg DesElms. A quick search engine check appears to indicate that he's left this world.

Confirmed, Charles. March, 2015, I believe.

So very sad. Many of the OGs are gone.

I don't think this particular entity still exists.
But to be fair, churches having groups with "Order" in their names is not unusual. In UOCC, there were groups of distinguished geriatric nitwits in parishes -chapters of "the Order of St. Andrew". Completely harmless, not an actual Order of nobility, mainly there to fundraise for the seminary. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople has "Archons", who I believe do get a fancy-sounding Byzantine court titles. They are known in America as, also, an "Order of St. Andrew"; many prominent Greek Americans are Archons. Their goal is to support the Patriarchate financially, as well as put pressure on the Turkish government to quit oppressing it. And, of course, the Pope is a sovereign ruler and awards actual Knighthoods.

I think the Order, at least, does exist. In fact the International Division was only founded in 2012.
The Nebraska entity? I'm not sure. It was around, when I wrote something about it in a forum a few years back.

Reiner: Sir, where did you get your degree in psychiatry?
    Brooks: Texas.
Reiner: Ah, yes, the University of Texas.
    Brooks: No, the state.
    Reiner: I beg your pardon?
Brooks: I put my hand on a rock, looked up to the sky, and said, "I am a psychiatrist!"

Oh, and I want to know when they're going to give Paul McCartney a life peerage? They gave one to Olivier. And Lloyd Webber. Why not arguably the best songwriter....ever?

And while I'm on an off-topic rant--ironic since I started the thread--what's with the Nobel going to Bob Dylan? Seriously? Not Leonard Cohen? Not Tom Waits? Not even Bernie Taupin? I'm not in favor of giving a literature prize to a lyricist, but if you're going to do it, at least get the right one!

And however you celebrate the holidays, I hope they're happy ones!

Right with you on both, Rich. The greatest. "Suzanne" and "Romeo is Bleedin' " still get me, after all these years. And so many more. :)
