The Ralston College article really is a head scratcher. A narcissist once worked for me. I knew a little about them prior because I'd read a few articles about NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder). So I recognized her NPD. She wasn't a horrible software engineer but was best assigned to projects that she could do on her own. The stories she told me about raising her kid made me very sad. For example, she would have to beat her son at the fast food ordering window because he would try to tell her what he wanted to eat. It was necessary for her to beat him because it was too distracting to have him talking while she was ordering. Folks with NPD shouldn't be parents and shouldn't be Presidents. At least that's my conclusion.

...And you reported this to the authorities, right?

I never saw it happen myself. This is just what she told me. Just to add fuel to the fire here , another thing she told me was that she learned she had to be more careful about hitting her son. The school nurse had contacted her about bruises on her son's body. So she had to be more careful where she hit him so the bruises wouldn't show at school.

A major problem with NPD is that folks with NPD don't have empathy. She was not able to empathize with her own son.

You don't have to see it to report it. Hopefully, next time someone is telling you that they beat their kid to bruising, you do more than just listen to their "whimsical" stories. WTF, man.

Also, every jurisdiction in the US and Canada allow you to make anonymous reports and the totality of that evidence can be used for them to take action even if what you saw or heard wouldn't be enough on its own.

That is good input. Although I don't see myself ever being in that position again. Folks with NPD are the worst and I can no longer be put in a position where I can't just refuse to ever talk to them again since I'm now retired. Like I said folks with NPD shouldn't ever be Presidents nor parents. Actually I'd guess that most NPDs are probably created by having a narcissistic parent.

    Seems so.

In part: "Narcissism tends to play out intergenerationally, with narcissistic parents producing either narcissistic or codependent children in turn." Whole thing here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_parent

Read a couple more sources that said the same thing. I remember it from Psych courses too. Not a one-to-one correlation, but frequent.

I never knew! Is this new? Congrats. You've certainly earned it! :)

I've been retired since I was 64 years old so that was almost 8 years ago. Thanks for the congrats though!

P.S. Thanks for the info on the high correlation for narcissism being passed down through the generations. I was very concerned about her son. He's probably either a NPD himself, a codependent or just a very unhappy young adult by now. I really do wish I'd known that I could have reported it at the time. Although it's unlikely it would have ended up helping, at least that whole mess wouldn't bother me so much now. Like I've been saying, narcissists should not be parents nor Presidents.

Sorry. I knew you were 71 but from something you said (I can't point to it) I thought you were still working. I've become quite good at misinterpretation, misunderstanding, etc. since I got old. I mis-this, mis-that, mis-a-lot-of-things. Because I keep falling asleep. :)

And when they're both, as in a fairly recent example -- it can be truly calamitous, for many, many people.

Ralston College update. On November 16 NECHE authorized Ralston to publish the following:

"The New England Commission of Higher Education has determined that Ralston College is eligible to proceed with an application for candidacy for accreditation within two years. A determination of eligibility is not candidacy or accreditation, nor does it indicate a likelihood of eventual accreditation. Questions about eligibility and the accreditation process should be directed to the President of the Commission."

Maybe I should write the Commission.... wouldn't do much but it'd let 'em know how I feel.

Peterson Academy update. Access will open in August and September.

Their subscription service will provide 8-hour video courses taught by professors from elite universities. They currently have 18 such courses and are adding 3 per month. The courses can be streamed or downloaded within an app. There will be social media features in which students can network. There will be some sort of "AI-testing" and course grading. They "plan to offer one-, two-, three- and four-year certificates." Student progress will be self-paced. Their (credulous) slogan is "Education, Devoid of Ideology."

The current pre-enrollment "tuition" cost is $449.99 US billed annually.

Thanks for the updates. I'm curious to hear what specific courses will be offered and what certificates will be issued. If the certificates have some level of specificity in their titles, they could be useful to add to the professional development section of one's resume. Though, hiring managers may be conflicted on the usefulness of these awards, depending on their political leanings (as well as their personal feelings about JP).

I guess time will tell how this pans out.

Well, so much for not wanting to meet the requirements of any ideologically-compromised expert body...
