    Emo Philips (for balance):

“Once I went to the library. I said, “I’d like a book on the Heimlich anti-choking maneuver,” and the guy said, “look at the card catalog. I’m busy.” So I go to the card catalog. I look under Heimlich and choking and maneuver. It’s not any of those places. And I see this first aid book with the section and I take it and that guy said, “It’s a reference book. You can’t take it out; you have to Xerox it.” I said, “Do you have change for a dollar?” He said, “It’s not a bank, it’s a library.” So I go to this souvenir stand and I said, “Do you have change for a dollar?” They said, “It’s not a bank, it’s a souvenir stand.” So I go to this bank, and they said, “Yes, this is a bank.” And they give me the change and I come back to it. And by this time there’s a line of students Xeroxing their books or whatever and I — finally I Xerox the Heimlich. As I go back the guy says, “Put it back, now that you’ve used it.” So I put it back. And as I leave, he says, “Thank you.” I said, “Well, thank you! I’m never coming to this barn again.” And I went back to my car. Now by this time, my sister’s almost purple from the chicken bone…

“We are just an advanced breed of monkey on a minor planet of a very average star.” —Stephen Hawking

If we're just highly-evolved pond scum—the products of time, chance, and natural processes—why is it objectively wrong to scam other clumps of cells, trod on other primates' beliefs, and bring destruction on the mammalian mutation that is mankind? By what “standard” of morality do you appeal to suggest these actions are absolutely wrong?

You quoted my quote, so I'll ask: who said that? I didn't.

One could argue that "survival of the fittest" now includes the survival of society itself. Society won't survive if people are scamming one another.

That said, I think religion has been used as an excuse for bad people to do bad things. It's also true that plenty of bad people have done things in the name of atheism. Pol Pot and Stalin come to mind.

Hasn't “society” survived even when people scam one other? Of course, this begs the question: by what standard of morality does one appeal to suggest that it is objectively and absolutely wrong for society not to survive?

I don't think atheism was either's central cause.

I always felt communists suppressed religion for political power, not because of religion per se. Busting up social systems to replace them with Stalinism. Keeping people suppressed. I don't think it had anything to do with a belief (or not) in god.

Just so we're clear: you're aware that Emo Philips is a comedian and that this was a joke, right?

    Yes.

Just so I'm clear: Is it equally acceptable for a forum member to make similar jokes about Jews, Muslims, and professing Atheists?

Interesting thread to read through. I keep my own personal beliefs to myself since there are too many people in this world who want to cause harm.

The Christian version resonated with me so I am equally eager to hear, and learn, from similar jokes on the others you mention.

Gosh, I would hope not. But anything strong enough can take a few jokes. Here's one:

What's the difference between an atheist and an evangelical Christian?

The atheist is honest about not following the teachings of Christ.

    (Rimshot, please.)

Well, although in church every Sunday Christians confess their sins against God, so at least something of a missed shot.

That said, being in a church that's seen its share of schism lately, I couldn't help but find the humor in the previous joke.

Does that mean forum members are free to “find the humor” in jokes about Jews and Muslims (since jokes about Christians are permissible)?

I make a motion to move this conversation to the Off-Topic portion of the forum. Do we have a 2nd? Lol

If you truly mean “anything,” does that mean homosexuals, trans people, and people of color aren't “strong enough” if they can't “take a few jokes”?

  19. Rich Douglas

    Rich Douglas Well-Known Member

No. They are. And they do. A lot.

“A lot” isn't always. So when homosexuals, trans people, and people of color aren't able to "take a few jokes," are they not “strong enough” at that point according to your claim that “anything strong enough can take a few jokes”? If they are strong enough regardless, why doesn't that same standard apply to others (whoever you define to be “anything,” which in context appears to be “evangelical Christians”)?
