I used to wear a watch called "FreeStyle" which was a cheap watch, but mine lasted 5 years. The band broke on me while I was running through a field in Iraq, so I chucked it into that field and when I got home a got a "G-Shock" and I have used them ever since. They can be a bit expensive, but if you watch for the deals, you can find a G-Shock for around $70 bucks.

For everyday use I have a couple of Timex tank watches. They're old fashioned looking and and look pretty good. One has a white square face the other black, leather bands. You can get them on the Timex website for about $45. I also have a nice looking timex chronograph which we got at Kohls on sale with coupons for about $50. Normally it sold for over $100.

I have a Seiko 5 which is self winding and looks pretty good for a cheap watch, I think I got that off Ebay for around $50.

And I highly recommend Citizen Ecodrive watches. A very handsome well made watch, I'm very pleased with mine, I think it's a couple hundred dollars or less.

I dated a rich girl back in the day, who used to buy me fancy crap all the time. Funny thing is, I'm a tee shirt and jeans type of guy, and I can't stand bling.

I still have two Movado watches and a Prada wallet sitting in a dresser drawer that I've never used. They just sit there and they have for about 4 years. She had expensive taste, so I'm sure they're really nice, but its just not my thing . .

I shop Khol's fairly often, combining coupons with sales and a Khol's card discount, but I haven't encountered a 24-hour dial there before. I've been looking for one!

I am all for arm candy. It's fly. Best watch I ever had was stolen in Tokyo ten years ago. There was a man in Chinatown, San Francisco, who painted and assembled dials to order. Charged $50 an hour if you left him a drawing or plan, and $25 an hour if you stood there and talked to him while he worked. He's long gone. So I've been wearing a $6 number from K-Mart, which runs fine and looks OK. But when discussions like this arise, I remember that I am really drawn to the designs of Alain Silberstein. While the originals are $2,000 to $5,000, the perfect replicas are 10% of that. Here's one site with about 100 examples: Alain Silberstein replica watch

Are you talking to me? In case you are, I have no idea what they're worth. Plus they are over 4 years old . . .

A guy in my SS class at church swears by his SF issued Suunto. I like the look - around $650.

Unpacking boxes, I knocked my banker's lamp off of my desk. You know the type with the green shade. I broke only the shade. Then I wondered if could I replace only the shade YES! For only $3.00 but, from Ali Baba. Chinese Communists. I considered the ethics of buying directly from the CHICOMS, but then I thought even if I were able to find just the lampshade at Walmart, what would be its provenance? How many middlemen are getting a cut? and so on. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the green banker's lamp lampshade from Ali Baba.

For years my daily watch is my Vostock Amphibia. It's almost indestructible. I learned of the old Soviet make while watching Youtube videos I like it so much that I bought two more Vostock watches directly from Russia. Subsequently, I became intrigued with Chinese watches. There are several Chinese brands that sell what are referred to as homage watches. They bear striking resemblances to luxury brands such as Rolex and Omega. Now in addition to my three-watch Vostock Watch collection, I have a three-watch Chinese watch collection. I am very fond of two Chinese Watch brands, Alpha 1993, and Parnis. This little collection of watches is just a fun diversion. My most loved object of any type is my 1967 Bulova Accutron Astronaut, a gift from my father.

You're a mystery, sometimes, Charles. :) You balk (and I agree with you) at sending $3 to China for a lampshade - and it's OK by me, that you decided to go ahead and do it. Perfectly sensible. Then you tell us you have collected no less than THREE Chinese watches. And very nice ones, too. I looked at the sites you mentioned - they seem to average a couple of hundred dollars apiece - and look like a lot more. :) Oh well - you're Captain of your own ship... do what makes you happy. :) I don't have a problem with it - whatever it takes, go for it.

While you're pondering that, let me mention my own collecting manias. Starting with Guitars and ending with WATCHES. I started with increasing my guitars from three - to eight, in the pandemic. My original goal was twelve - half the number that Earl Klugh, one of my idols, has. I quickly realized that was too high a number to love and care for properly -- so I reduced the goal to eight. I'm happy with the results. I may trade in my Yamaha FSX800 but I won't have more than eight. It's a beautiful instrument, but I'd really like to get a sycamore-bodied Almansa Flamenco, made in Spain, and trading the Yamaha would reduce the bite.

Seven of my guitars are Asian, but none Chinese. Years back, Chinese manufacturers had a long and dirty history of cloning American guitars worth a couple of thousand, and selling the fakes for maybe $250. Some guys I knew called the fakes "Chibsons" for "Chinese Gibson." So brazen, they even had a fake Gibson logo on the headstock! China has little regard for Western copyrights or patents etc. Their industries made their mark by copying and selling cheap. There were suits over designs by BMW and other manufacturer. You could buy a look-like-Mercedes cheap - right down to the three-pointed star. They're still at it, BIG TIME in watches. I'm with you on that, Charles - I try not to buy stuff from China, either.
In my fashion course, I read the section about how one should dress for the first job in fashion -differently for about a dozen starter jobs. The advice: "A watch is the first badge of responsibility. I My thinking - all true, but a REALLY nice watch could be a badge of SUCCESS. And whether or not I can actually point to any real success - or not - They look great. So recently - I decided to start a collection of watches.

I didn't know much - except that I like small (for men) watches and I have a strong liking for rectangular ones. I don't want ANY mechanical watches - maintenance and reliability issues - even worse on some of the big names. So quartz it is, 100%. And I'd like most of them to be Swiss.

My first one was a Movado Museum. One like it here:
    https://www.movado.com/us/en/shop-watches/museum-classic-0607271.html?country=CA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-tvfgrP9-wIVg97ICh2vRAY4EAQYASABEgJhq_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The one I got (silver color, small black dial) listed around $1000 Cdn. A department store got four of them in - and the one I bought went for $299! Case closed.

No. 2 was a Japanese watch - an Anchor I saw in a jewellery store - rectangular and very small - the way I like them I've looked at it on and off for at least 3 years and finally coughed up $35. The gold version is here - mine is silver, with a black dial - silver markers. Day and date. https://www.flipkart.com/anchor-analog-watch-men-women/p/itmf3zf6hxzupj4r
I checked around and it has a surprising similarity in looks to a Baume & Mercier Hampton that sells for around $2000.

No 3 is Swiss, like the Movado. It's a Mathey-Tissot that has a great resemblance to a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. I liked the blue dial and the Rolex resemblance. I'm a vain so-and-so (no apologies) about how I dress and and I have a matching tie. I'm ordering it from Amazon - $155 Canadian, right after Christmas. Here's a pic of the Mathey-Tissot and one of a Rolex Oyster - same colour dials. The cheapest price for a Rolex Oyster in Canada is $6,400. Most go for more. I'll take the $150 Mathey.

That's it, so far. More as I get 'em.

The trick is to shop the AliExpress sales. I did not spend more than $60.00 (including shipping) for any of the watches I purchased. Oh! I did give in to buying the $3.00 lamp shade, it's supposed to arrive tomorrow. Almost immediately, I began receiving emails from AliExpress inviting me to purchase more watches. Which is what really prompted me to revive this old thread.

I am a bit of a luthier hobbyist. Years ago my daughter and I put together a Telecaster look-alike guitar kit from eBay. It looks and sounds great. I've read where others have invested in higher-quality pickups. The ones that came with the kit were fine for our purposes. We had so much fun assembling and painting the Tele that we went ahead and did a Stratocaster look-alike (whammy bar and all) a short time later. I'm pondering a reason to do a third. The headstocks of the guitar necks do come shaped as big ugly rectangles. With my trusty jigsaw, I was able to fashion reasonable homages to the Fender originals.

Great hobby, Charles. I wish I could see the pics but I get a "Sorry this content is unavailable" from Facebook. My eldest grandson (23 now) has put together around 4 kit electric guitars - two are Teles. He also has an Epiphone Les Paul I gave him for his 18th birthday. He's a very good, serious rock player - been at it since he was 11 or 12.

My original plan was to do a kit but I decided otherwise. I'd been waiting 55 years for a Tele and I was going to have a real one. I spent a long time (during the pandemic) searching around locally for true Fender hardware and I got a neck from Fender USA with all the righteous decals etc. The body is custom - Canadian Black Walnut - and it was made locally to exact Fender specs. Only non-Fender items are the pickups. Seymour Duncan dual Hot Rails - humbuckers that fit into the Fender single-coil slots. Awesome! I had the guitar assembled and professionally set up by the best guitar tech I've ever known. "Miss Vanessa" is a continuing delight.
