Trump, Ukraine, and the Meme-ing of Marco Rubio: Why the secretary of state’s stone-like posture during the Zelenskyy meltdown might have been exactly as telling as observed (Gabriel Sherman, Vanity Fair, March 4, 2025)

“The Panama Canal was built by Americans for Americans, not for others. But others could use it. But it was built at tremendous cost of American blood and treasure,” Trump said. “It was given away by the Carter administration for one dollar. But that agreement has been violated very severely. We didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back. And we have Marco Rubio in charge. Good luck, Marco. Now we know who to blame if anything goes wrong,” Trump said, chuckling.

No way he makes it to 18 months. I'd love to know what Trump said to him to convince him to give up his Senate seat. What a dumbass.

Rubio is an intelligent man but definitely was a dumbass when he accepted the Secretary of State position under Trump.

Actually Trump is an intelligent fellow as well. He's also a dumbass though because he thinks he knows everything and so doesn't listen to expert advice, dumbass.

Sec. Rubio lacks moral courage. This is a common defect among elected officials. But he isn't in an elected office right now. He should have acted from his convictions (if he has any) and refused to accept Trump's appointment.

He used to be. But if you compare interviews with him from the '80s with the way he speaks now, it's clear that there's been a lot of decline.

    Very true, sad but true.

Big blowup between Rubio and Musk. Well, what did Rubio expect? Screwtape says that what really gladdens the Devil's heart is to take a man's soul and give him NOTHING in exchange. Rubio sold his soul to Trump and received, predictably, nothing in exchange for it.

It is mysterious. Presidents are frequently former Senators. But the last Secretary of State to get elected President was James Buchanan.

Republicans don't want statesmanship in a president; at least not since Reagan. They want power. (Or, in the case of Trump, ersatz power.) I believe it contributed to GHWB's fall. He became president on the coattails of Reagan, but couldn't do it on his own.
