Update: A group of friends were sitting around this morning, among them was my disabled friend. I said, "Everyone, could I have your attention, please?" Then, I presented my disabled friend with the framed Allison certificate giving it a big flourish and my personal congratulations. Everyone applauded and for half an hour, friends were asking him about it and congratulating him. He was smiling from ear to ear today, and you don't see that much with this guy. It was really cool because he was suddenly carrying himself taller and talking about future plans. I have been praying that this will light a spark in him and it looks like that is exactly what is happening. As we all know, achievement and self-respect is addictive, and once he has a little taste of it, he may be motivated to do something with his life.

The only problem is that his parents are now into a multilevel marketing thing where they sell some sort of special juice that is supposed to make you younger. They are telling him he can make it rich doing their thing, and he should blow off everything else to sell this juice. (It's not Zanga, it's some competitor) if you have ever tried one of those multilevel marketing business, you know it's only the people at the top that make any money. I know, I tried one once. His parents are uneducated and struggle to pay rent and just survive. Now they seem to me to discourage anything he does to rise above them. Maybe that's not fair for me to say, but it sure looks that way.

You asked for it - picture: Alison diploma

I don't think it looks very sexy for $100 +. But from what I read they have security measures on them, with holograms and such.

If the Project Management program is "good", I would most likely buy the diploma though. Simply torn on this one.. :lmao:

Sooooo for all that were wondering, having now seen it what do you think

And everyone with an internet connection :lmao: Sounds like fun, I might try it, too.
 Nice move! Let us know how things go for him!

It's Working Now he has finished the IT diploma program at Alison and wants to go for his A+ cert. We are looking at a program at our local CC. It's 3 classes at $110 each, I'll probably pay for it. But as they say, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

I support this kind of charity. I'm a "teach a man to fish" kinda gal. In fact, our family is a regular gifter of Heifer International livestock. Anyway, in my opinion, you should work out a barter for him to do something in return for you upon completion. This allows him to have dignity in accepting your generosity, and it even allows you to have a working relationship that qualifies you to write a professional/business related letter of rec for him. It could be a very very good boost for this guy! Again, I applaud your work!!

I had never heard of Heifer International before and your post caused me to look it up. What a great program that seems to be. Same principle; don't just give them food, give them a way to support themselves. Thanks, Jennifer.

And not to go ot, but their requirement includes giving away some offspring to members of their community and teaching them how to farm/raise the animal and breed. They inturn do the same. So buying a cow is like buying a cow squared. :)

Thanks for posting the pic. I'll post a pic of my friends diploma from Alison when it arrives. For the $135 I paid for it, I hope it has a hologram or at least an embossed foil seal on it. I'm going to be ticked if it doesn't. Of course, the $135 is paying for the course too. That's how they make their money, I guess.

They inundate you with advertisements, which you can get rid of with a paid subscription. Also, they have an employer testing service. Basically, an employer can pay ALISON to administer a formal exam to an ALISON graduate in order to add an extra layer of validation to the person's course completion, and to verify that the person still holds the knowledge claimed by the certificate.

Also, since ALISON courses are nothing but self-study material uploaded on a web interface, there isn't likely to be a huge overhead. Since the courses are developed by third parties, ALISON need not have very many employees.

How many do you want to guess? I guess one. Maybe you and I should start something like this.

Actually, that is exactly what I was thinking. One person could realistically pull it off. Even the webmastering and certificate design could all be one person.

Wouldn't it be cool if Khan Academy had certificate courses?!

I wouldn't be surprised if Kahn did that. It would be a great way to finance his mission.

Oh no problem, I was wondering what it looked like myself.

One big question is will these be accepted as a valid source of education? Like I mentioned I am interested in the Project Management Diploma program but don't want to waste money on something that will not be accepted as genuine.

    Thanks

You don't have to waste money on it. It is free unless you want a physical diploma.

Will it be accepted as genuine? I tell you what. I wouldn't expect to get a job based upon it, but whether or not it works for you might come down to which of these two items you would prefer on your resume:

    • Knows a thing or two about X.
    • Diploma in X - ALISON

I'm not sure if it would work on my resume, since my profession is heavy on the need for professional certification first, experience second and education third. If I start throwing in all sorts of Diplomas and Certs that have nothing to do with work then it would obfuscate what I truly bring to the table. That said, I could see where diplomas that are location-specific would be beneficial. That is, if I decided to work for the courts it may be advantageous for me to have Diploma in Legal Studies stuck in there.

Lastly, I view ALISON in the same way that I view anything that I look at in Itunes U. It really is about personal growth and interest. It's just pretty cool that unlike most of such free courseware programs, this one keeps your transcript and even allows you to download certificates and diplomas (for a fee that I'm not willing to pay, but heck, it's cool anyway ).

I already reviewed the Health Studies diploma in another thread. In short: waste of time. However, I've poked around at a few others which seem to be very comprehensive and educative. I think I'll be spending some good time on that site when I'm done with my degrees.

These are not accredited or offered by any recognized agency so I wouldn't count on using these things like a university degree. About the best you can hope for is to use them as a little resume padding. You will have to have the appropriate degrees to land a job or get a promotion. The good thing about them is that you don't have to pay anything, as Maniac discovered, you can get a transcript proving that you finished the course for free, you only have to pay if you want a diploma to hang on your wall.

I like what Maniac said, they prove that you know a thing or two about the subject. That's about all you can hope for; a little resume padding. I wouldn't pay for a cert to hang on my wall either but I'm thinking about doing the IT one just out of interest.
