ARGGG! Saw my disabled friend face to face today. He told me that the Alison courses were confusing and his mom said he shouldn't do anything that he was not absolutely in love with doing. It appears that he is backing out just like he does with everything. What he loves to do is play his guitar and sing. He's quite good, but you can't make a living at that. I know this for a fact because I did it many years and almost starved. So he appears to not want to work for a degree. It's not lack of money stopping him; it's lack of motivation. I can't help this kid. I've tried; I'm done.

I still say straighterline accounting is the way to go.
He can go buy the used course textbook on amazon.com for 10 dollars shipped like I did.
He can then read that book cover to cover and then sign up for the class and finish accounting I & II in one month for a grand total of around 200 bucks.
I have trouble motivating people. I just don't get it. Some people complain about their weight but they won't go to the gym or modify their diet. They just complain and I get sick of hearing them do it.
Its like complaining that your house is dirty. Go clean it. Its that simple.

I'm completing the social media diploma this week. I'm only 10% finished and I've logged 8 hours.....this might take a little longer than I'd counted on! However- very helpful stuff!

I'm interested in a few of the diplomas. Some of them look very useful, and might even look nice as a resume pad. Several of the certificate courses cover topic that would not likely lead to career development but would have great personal value for one to learn. For example, the courses on lifestyle diseases and diet/nutrition could be beneficial for anyone at all to take up.

Yes, if I weren't up to my eyeballs in the EdD stuff, I'd like to take a few of those too. Maybe when I'm done.

You friend needs hope. I am thinking that he should volunteer to perform at hospitals, old folks homes, hospices, etc. There are groups/individuals who do this to cheer people up on a volunteer basis. It gets him out of the house and doing what he loves. He may make some connections or find his true calling somewhere. If his eyes are messed up, he can wear shades. It sounds also like his mother is part of the problem. I would never discourage him from trying anything.

Very good, yes, I agree. I think his mother is a big part of the problem in all of her trying to help. The kid is 25 and she still babies him. You are right to say not to discourage him too, in fact, I have been trying to kick him in the butt to get him out of his apartment and do something. His mother will not be able to carry him for his entire life.

He plays and sings at our church a lot, so at least he does that.

You did a good thing, you showed him the door. Still be his friend, and remind him you can help, but it's his journey. Help is only help if it's wanted- otherwise it has another name. :)

Oh, and an edit. I would disagree with Ms. Momma. You don't have to love something youre doing. There are plenty of reasons to things you don't love. (obligation, commitment, dignity, and responsibility) IF you are lucky and end up with a few nice intersections in your life, then good, but the two IMO are not connected.

Thank you Jennifer. I concur, mamma is not doing her son a service here. Even if he is almost blind, she has got to help him stand on his own feet. I tried.

Very few of us absolutely love what we do. I don't, I'm OK with it, but I don't love it.

He finished a module! My disabled friend surprised me today and said that he finished the accounting module, took the test and passed with 80%. He was really encouraged that he was able to pass. Maybe there is hope for him after all.

Yes, if we can just get a fire lit under him. The Allison thing is a pretty small accomplishment but it might give him a little encouragement.

You might just tell him that a lot of people are pulling for him here. Baby steps, but he has to start somewhere!

This is a bit like a good soap opera! Tell him many of us are following his story, I know I am! :)

To add to the drama, I think he might be mad at me if I tell that he is being talked about. One the other hand, I might could get him interested in participating on this board if I showed it to him. It might be an additional motivation. Wonder what I should do.

    DO. NOT. DO. THAT.

    That would not be helpful.
