"Leaders of the House Oversight Committee said today that Michael Flynn may have violated U.S. law when he failed to disclose the fact that he received payment from Russia for a 2015 speech. So what law, specifically, might Flynn have violated here, and what could the punishment be?

Congressman Jason Chaffetz and Elijah Cummings of the House Oversight Committee said this week that in 2016, Michael Flynn did not disclose on an application to renew his security clearance that he was paid for a speech delivered for Russia Today in Moscow.

This failure to disclose could be considered a violation of U.S. Code Title 18 Section 1001.

SF 86, the form that must be filled out in order to renew a security clearance, mentions that providing any inaccurate statements or concealing information is a felony.

“The U.S. Criminal Code (title 18, section 1001) provides that knowingly falsifying or concealing a material fact is a felony which may result in fines and/or up to five (5) years imprisonment,” SF86 reads. “In addition, Federal agencies generally fire, do not grant a security clearance, or disqualify individuals who have materially and deliberately falsified these forms.”

U.S. Criminal Code Title 18 Section 1001 notes that the person must have “knowingly and willfully” falsified or concealed the information."

Manafort is very, very well known for making enormous dough in service of a pro-Russian criminal gang that hijacked Ukrainian state. He was basically another status symbol of President Yanukovych: normal oligarchs have latest Mercedes cars and yachts, vainer ones get Jennifer Lopez for a birthday party, Yanukovych had stolen Mizhygirya estate, fraudulent academic titles ("ProFFessor), helicopter rides, fabulously wealthy children, circle of cronies... and "American political consultant Manafort", who got millions in part to show that The Boss can afford it. Part of his gangsta glamour. It is inconceivable that Manafort may have NOT colluded with Kremlin, with his deep ties in the region and his GRU second-in-command. Then there was bizarre gutting of anti-Russian stance in the Republican platform during the convention; literally the only plank Trump campaign showed any interest in. I do not know what the investigation will uncover, and if anyone goes to jail; but frankly, having Manafort in the orbit should be enough to disqualify a candidate (for Presidency! Are you kidding me???)

If I were after Flynn then I might be looking at his activities in support of Erdogan and not some technical malfeasance in some Russian dealings. And I doubt that he's the only Democrat to have had Russian dealings.

The then-Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation went on national TV and said that Hillary Clinton broke numerous Federal felony laws, but she was not prosecuted.

    I wonder why?

Yes, I agree with that. And that's one of the reasons why these investigations take so long.
