When Dan wrote to Tom, >>Will you be coming to LA anytime, or are you going to keep it totally distance? If you do come out give me a shout, I will buy you lunch<< that brings up the general notion of FTF meetings of news groupsters. In general, this seems to be a pleasant thing to do, talking shop and all. I've had nice lunches with Chip, Russ, Larry, Steve, and a few other regulars, and look forward to more, and I've heard about other twoses and threeses getting together. So perhaps as we travel about, this is something to keep in mind. --John Bear, in El Cerrito, a San Francisco suburb

The same goes if your plane crashes and you find yourself in Fresno, California. I'm assuming that no one intentionally comes here. <grin>

It's always nice to put a face to the posts.

I'll third that motion. Anyone who gets to (or close to) Boston, please let me know. I'll be glad to buy lunch/dinner.

But wait. Tom and I had a very pleasant lunch at the Smiling Tomato, or some such, in Fresno last summer. Or at least it was someone *claiming* to be Tom. Maybe I should have asked for ID?

    And John, don't forget Scott.

-Scott, who is so close to getting his autographed copy of the 14th Edition that he can taste it!

I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may intend to incriminate me.

    Come on Tom,

You must have been tried and convicted,
I mean you have been sentenced to FRESNO for goodness sakes [IMG]

No "correction" here, but definitely several prisons an hour or two away. What we got here is agriculture. As it happens, Fresno County is the most agriculturally proficient place in the world.

I guess you could say we have rednecks by the bushel!

Tell me about it. I have often told my wife that it must have been love. Surely nothing else would have gotten me to move here! Funny thing is that now it's home.

By the way, for those who haven't been here or haven't been for a while, Fresno has over 400,000 people now. It seems like a lot for a place like Fresno. [IMG]

El Cerrito is a SF suburb?

I'm usually always up for a FTF. I am fortunate that my wife is willing to let honey-do's take a back seat to education stuff. Of course, coming from a family of academecians, it isn't surprising :)

The inmates of Fresno are often let out on good behavior though, in order to visit Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks up in the Sierras, which are an easy day trip away.

My goodness, it certainly does. How does one find your trailer then, Tom? I'm up that way every now and then . . .

Today I had a very nice lunch with Mr. Bill Huffman, who was surprisingly gentle and soft-spoken in person considering how ballsy he is on the web. (Funny that PaulC and Richie D were talking about lunch today as Rich's name came up over my burrito. I can't help but think my ears might burn a little when Paul and Rich meet on the other coast.)

And I'm still gonna take you up on that smoothie, John, when I get to the Bay area this summer.

It was a most delightful lunch. However, I think our ears will burn much more if Sheila Danzig sees fit to follow Steve Levicoff's suggestion and has lunch with another special resident of Sunrise, Florida.

I, for one, cannot imagine why. I have no idea who you are (outside of your posts regarding CCHS and MIGS), and cannot imagine why it would be important to discuss you.

The house should be much cheaper down there comparing to the bay area right? That may be one reason.

I never said it would be "important" to "discuss" me, Rich. But you have "discussed" me before, and I think the fact that you only mention my CCHS and MIGS posts above shows you have a distinct interest in what I say about them. And considering you and PaulC have taken the most adversarial stances against our Harcourt Bites group, it wouldn't surprise me if our activities came up in your lunch conversation.

Then again, you two might be too busy discussing ways to apologize for scammy mill operations on the web to bring up little old me, which I would understand completely.

I mentioned the CCHS and MIGS posts because you've addressed me specifically regarding those two schools. What you had to say isn't important, nor memorable. But that's the only way I know even a little bit about who you are. I have no idea what the Harcourt Bites stuff is all about, nor do I care.

I'm sorry you and a few others choose to stray from the issues and into personalities--personalities of people you don't even know. But it is tiresome and serves no purpose.

I mentioned you in the THU thread, too, Rich.

True enough, relatively speaking. One of my favorite philosophers said that all human conversation is no different from the birds chirping in the trees.

I will add, however, that many people have written me to say how much they like what I have to say about Harcourt and their fraudulent ways.

Yes, you are quick to turn a blind eye to the revelations of scammery sometimes.

My, my, but the hypocrisy doth flow freely.
