I'm a graduate of The University of the State of New York. I've never seen the utility in changing that with parentheticals.

Interesting I wonder if they plan to bring doctoral programs now that they rebranded their name to Excelsior University.

As a graduate of Excelsior I am not happy about this. I just an official email about it from Excelsior today. I had a job interview once and I told the guy that I went to Excelsior College in New York. He had not heard of it and didn't seem to think the college was real. He then went on to tell me he had graduated from Regents College in New York. He really was not happy with what I told him next.

This is one of those stories that is so unbelievable that it has to be true because no one could possibly imagine making it up! :D

The University of the State Of New York is an interesting and impressive entity which still exists. Back in the 1980s and 1990s when I served in the military, the education officers recommended Regents College for those of us who had multiple sources of college credit because of their user friendliness in accepting transfer credit. My diploma says The University of the State of New York but I graduated Regents College now Excelsior University. When I attended high school in New York, the diploma also said The University of the State of New York and the name of the High School.

Additionally, those who obtained a GED in new York have the name University of the State of New York. I also have a friend who went through a foreign medical school and when he completed his New York residency he was awarded a Physician and Surgeon diploma from the University of the State of New York. I have never heard of anyone actually taking live courses from USNY so I consider them more as an accrediting institution that has oversight on the quality of education programs from k through 12, college and professional programs such as medicine. Not to be confused with SUNY!

Excelsior College now University handles my transcripts so I personally will apply for issuance of new diplomas for dust collection. I’m a veteran that went to Regents College now Excelsior University that was overseen by the University of the State of New York and not ashamed of it! I also hold graduate degrees from a SUNY school of which I am equally proud of.

Wikipedia has a good definition. "The University of the State of New York (USNY, is the state of New York's governmental umbrella organization for both public and private institutions in New York State." Noteworthy is that the entity was established in 1784.

University of the State of New York - Wikipedia

"As explained in the text, USNY is not a "bricks and mortar" school, but an accrediting and chartering body. However, from 1971 through 1998, USNY did directly confer degrees via its Regents external degree program."

So yes, to say our degrees were conferred by USNY is a correct statement!

I don't have a choice. My degrees were conferred before there was a separate, free-standing school.

When I attended, it was the Regents External Degree Program. This was later changed to the Regents College Degree Program. When the program was set up as a free-standing school and privatized, it became Regents College. However, this was a temporary arrangement between the Regents (USNY) and Regents College. IIRC, they had 3 years to change the name. When they did, they changed it from Regents College to Excelsior College, and now Excelsior University.

Thus, in reverse chronological order, you could be a graduate of Excelsior University, Excelsior College, Regents College, or USNY. In other words, I'm NOT a graduate of the REDP, even though that was the program USNY ran to conduct its degree-granting operations.

I thought Excelsior College is part of Microsoft University, one of the colleges within the university including Accessior College, PowerPointior College, Outlookior College, Wordior College, etc. :D

Ah, good old MU. (Sometimes known as Monopoly University.) Gave its degrees away for free (bundled in another credential package) and put Netscape C.C. out of business.

My case is a little different. I hold a BS conferred by USNY in 1990 but an associate degree from Excelsior. Excelsior manages the transcript and doesn't differentiate the schools. It simply says BS conferred 1990 and Associates 2002 with the concentrations/majors. When applying for work or graduate school, it is easier for me to list it as one school because that is how it is listed on the transcript. Otherwise, the school or employer wants to see a transcript from The University of the State of New York which doesn't issue transcripts as far as I know. Do they?? I have however had a company I work for want to see the diploma and it says The University of the State of New York, not Regents College, and my associates says Excelsior College. I think I will pay the money to Excelsior University and get issued new diplomas if able and update my resume. I would prefer to skip the parentheticals and just write Excelsior University. Is that an issue? Thanks in advance.

I don't see anything duplicitous with listing a qualification either under the name the school had at the time or the name it has now, as seems best to you.

But in this special case, if two degrees under two different names? I’d pick one, and it would have to be Excelsior, given the USNY name can’t apply to the associates.
