I was on alt.education.distance. That was so long ago! I remember many conversations with John Bear. He once told me the easiest way to get published was to write a cookbook.

Interesting. John and his wife, Dr Marina Bear, wrote a book called How to Repair Food, all about recovering from meal prep disasters in the kitchen. That got John interviewed on Letterman (back in the NBC days). Dave was a little more sardonic back then and poked great fun at the book. I didn't care for the interview. I hope it sold a ton of books.

I was about 16 and exploring the career and education reference section in the library when I discovered the Bears' remarkably different and clever and full of possibilities non-traditional college guide. I bought my own copy and their sister titles and pored over them. They noted alt.education.distance. I stepped in and participated and I've been stepped in and participated intermittently in its successors since.

Indeed he was. Always with those two blazing six-guns. Like John Wayne with a Doctorate.

More like John Wayne with an honorary doctorate. He got one from USC in 1968.

If you say so. But he earned a real PhD. prior to that - Michigan State, 1966.

Rabbi Wiki (as nosborne48 once called him - and I do ever since) says so:

"Bear attended Reed College in Oregon (class of 1959),[1][2] and holds bachelor's and master's degrees from University of California, Berkeley (1959 and 1960, respectively) and a doctorate from Michigan State University (1966).[3]"

So: John Wayne with 2 doctorates, or maybe Clint Eastwood with a "Fistful of Degrees." :)

I was talking about John Wayne and his honorary doctorate, you are talking about John Bear and an earned doctorate.

Duuuh. Sorry. From the wording of your post, I thought (wrongly) you were saying that Dr. Bear had been awarded an honorary degree. My sincere apologies - to all concerned.

Thanks Steve - it does help. Proves I'm (possibly) not yet in severe cognitive decline, as I feared. :) At my age, it's a worry.

Doctor told me not to worry about that kind of thing. It happens to everyone at every age. She said the type thing to worry about is seeing someone you've known for years and you don't remember their name or driving someplace and then not knowing what you drove there for. That type of thing.

I appreciate the reassurance, Bill. Sincerely. I should add, though - when a doctor tells me not to worry, I worry.

Years ago, I asked my (then) doctor to take a look at a mole. He looked and said not to worry. "Just a mole." It wasn't. Years later - cancer. And what did the specialist say? "John, you have melanoma - but I don't want you to worry..."

    Doctors...

@Bill Huffman And I'd really worry if I drove somewhere and didn't remember why. Reason: I don't have a car. I gave my last one away 24 years ago. :) Walking is good...

I'm sure there are some on this forum who would suggest it means we're both declining! ;)

Just the crazies, Steve. Safe to disregard them. ALL of them... :)

I happened to see this diploma example below. Is it common to have the signature of the student (recipient) on a diploma?

That would be a first for me. Usually, they have the president, provost, and board chair. Sometimes the dean of the college.

Here's my provisional certificate from Assam Don Bosco University. I find it weird that they mentioned "son of..." and included my parents' names.
In India, provisional certificates are issued to students until the degree is awarded.

Thanks for sharing, Dr. Chris. I knew nothing about a "provisional certificate."
