Depression coming? Might put off doctorate for a year or two.

I was lucky to get in at the beginning of the bubble of online education. I made a comfortable living for a while but then things were starting to get more hectic and notice that many schools are trying to get into the online degree business. I got out of this and don't regret it as it was getting too tough.

You have to get into fields that are crying for people. There is a new boom for trade professionals that are charging small fortunes for services. There is also the health care business that is booming. I would stay away from the online education business for now. A friend finished his PhD in Education technology (Distance learning) and was unemployed for a while, he finally got a job as an instructional designer but this is way below his training.

People are over educated now so they won't be demanding education in the short term.

This reminds me to life in some places in Europe. In some European countries, it is not uncommon to see people with 3 careers just to try to make ends meet.
Unemployment in some of European countries is really high (23% in Spain) so people are starting to get multiple skills just to be employable. Also, Education in Europe is free in most countries so this doesn't help with the overeducated issue.

Makes sense. However, that book resonates with what I have been feeling in my gut for quite awhile, that is why it has affected me. Plus, I'm not quitting on the EdD, I'm just considering taking a year or so off to see how things pan out with our nation. I'll be half-way through the classes and I'll have my EdS. I'll take a leave of absence and I can easily pick up where I left off should things actually turn out rosy.

I don't think this board actually has any.

I understand how you are feeling. I am working on a six course certificate at NCU that can transfer into a PhD. I will be able to complete the certificate and reavulate nine months or so from now. I might never continue with the doctorate for financial reasons or otherwise. I am also working on shoring up my home mortgage situation by paying off a second mortgage so that I can refinance the first. I feel like three degrees and a CAGS will have to be enough for now.

On the other hand, in a year or two, tuition might rise to $googolplex and you'd never be able to afford it anyway.

I can relate on a much smaller scale when it comes to doing a master's degree in my situation. Sure, the $7k or so that my degree would cost doesn't sound like much compared to what many others on this board are willing to spend, but I am decidedly against doing any degree that does not plausibly return more in money (not the partially hydrogenated personal accomplishment money substitute, but the real thing: $$$$$) than I pay for it and in my case, it is very difficult to tell what the potential payoffs of a master's degree could be. Then there is the possibility I expressed earlier that by the time I decide what I want to do, the under $7k master's degrees just won't exist anymore.

By the time you finally decide it will be the Matrix and we can just download degrees to our minds.

    Take the red pill!

It's such a hard decision to make when you can't see into the future. I can totally relate to what you have said.

Or maybe they're just too technologically incompetent to delete a post. ;)
